'09 SC ATH Stephon Gilmore (South Carolina signee)

Gilmore in UT camp, keeping open mind
By Dave Hooker (Contact)
June 12, 2008

Stephon Gilmore has long said Tennessee leads for his services. This week, the defensive back from South Pointe High in Rock Hill, S.C., is letting his traveling do his talking.

UT coaches and fans surely would have understood had Gilmore decided against attending this weekend's junior camp in Knoxville. After all, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound cornerback has a seven-on-seven passing tournament in the NFL's Panther Stadium on Saturday.

No matter. Gilmore and family will make the 6-hour roundtrip drive to make sure everybody knows just how interested Gilmore is in UT.

"That's how serious we are about it," Gilmore's father, Steve Gilmore, said. "He likes the Vols."

Stephon Gilmore's close friendship with former UT defensive back Jonathan Hefney led to the natural connection to Knoxville. Once UT extended a scholarship offer, Gilmore was even more enchanted.

Still, his mind isn't made up. Gilmore visited Alabama's football camp this month and will travel to Ohio State for the Buckeyes' camp in late June. One of the top defensive back prospects in the Southeast, Gilmore is also considering Florida State, South Carolina and Clemson.

Gilmore Focused On Four

By Phil Kornblut
DB Stephon Gilmore (6-2 195) of South Pointe recently trimmed his long list of offers to a final four of USC, Clemson, Alabama and Tennessee. He said Thursday those will be his four official visits and he's not yet set dates. "They are all pretty even," Gilmore said. "Clemson and USC are recruiting me the hardest. I want to go to a school where I can get on the field in a hurry." Gilmore, who can play several positions, said all of his favorites are recruiting him as a cornerback. He attended USC's Showcase Camp last week and talked with recruiter Ellis Johnson. He talked with his Clemson recruiter Billy Napier on Monday. Gilmore is no doubt getting a lot of advice from those close to him. Two of his best friends, Devonte Holloman and Charles Holmes, have committed to Clemson and USC respectively. That's created a bit of a problem for Gilmore. "I'm close to both of them," he said. "I would like to play with one of them." But he would not say which. Gilmore, who also has visited Clemson this summer, said he won't take any more visits before he takes his official visits this fall.

Gilmore Names His Top Five
By Eric Guimaraes

DB Stephon Gilmore (6-2 195) of South Pointe has narrowed his list to five schools. He plans on taking official visits to all five. They are USC, Clemson, FSU, Tennessee, and Alabama. Gilmore had a chance to visit both Clemson and USC practices last week and liked both. He feels he has a good opportunity to play early at both schools. "I got a chance to see who I would be competing against (at both schools) and I think I could play early." He enjoyed his visit to USC and says it gave him a chance to get to know the coaches better. " Coach (Ellis) Johnson is a good guy. He's straighforward with you. He told me he likes me because I'm a big cornerback. A lot of the backs they have now are smaller than me." He echoed that remark about Clemson. "Their coaches seem nice and I think I could play early. They have a couple of seniors that will be leaving." Gilmore says highschool teammate and Clemson commit Devonte Holloman is always in his ear about becoming a Tiger. Not to be outdone, Gamecock commit Damario Jeffrey of Columbia High School is in contact with him about going to USC. "He (Jeffrey) texts me almost every single day. He says we can be the first to do a lot of things there." Gilmore thinks his team has a great chance of winning the state championship this year and plans to announce his commitment that weekend. "It doesn't matter if they play in Columbia or in Clemson. That won't affect my decision." He plans to go to the USC/Georgia game in Columbia and the USC/Clemson game at Death Valley. Gilmore is graduating early and intendes to enroll in January. He does not have a leader.

Stephon Gilmore staying home with the Gamecocks
Under Armour All-American Stephon Gilmore has committed to South Carolina over Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson, Florida State and a host of other schools, ESPN's JC Shurburtt reports.

Gilmore said his decision came down to early playing time and his relationship with the Gamecocks coaches, namely defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who took over his recruitment shortly after arriving in Columbia in January.
