His measureables at first make him seem way too small to be a linebacker (although his video highlight lists him at 6'0" and 180 vice the stats on Rivals), but his video shows he's more than capable. He tackles and pursues well, and his exceptional speed is quite evident in several plays. And his 315 bench at 171 pounds for his age shows he has the strength needed. Plus, any Michigan kid that lists Ohio State deserves attention.

Local players among stars of recruiting showcase

Shamari Benton, SS, Birmingham Brother Rice, 6-0/183/4.50: Benton traveled to Akron with a very clear objective: show the ability to play safety. He has been a standout linebacker at Rice, but he projects as a defensive back on the next level. He acquitted himself in the secondary very well during the tourney, displaying a nice burst and good ball skills. Halfway through the event, Benton had already collected at least four interceptions. He has been to junior days at Michigan and Michigan State in recent weeks, but neither has offered. Both schools want to see him at their summer camps. At this point he favors MSU.
