Big recruiting week for Tigers
By Phil Kornblut
Monday, January 12, 2009
Clemson had its biggest recruiting weekend of the month this past weekend and the Tigers added another commitment to their 2009 class in Shrine Bowl linebacker Spencer Shuey (6-3, 245) of Charlotte.
"I loved everything about it," Shuey said. "The players, the coaches, they were all great."
Shuey picked the Tigers over offers from North Carolina, Wake Forest and Illinois.
Clemson also picked up a commitment last week from defensive end Leon Mackey (6-6, 260) of Hargrave Prep, Va. He picked the Tigers over Virginia Tech, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee and Arkansas.
These newest commitments give the Tigers an even dozen for 2009.
In other recruiting news: In all, 13 prospects took official visits to Clemson over the weekend. The other non-Clemson committed prospects on campus other than Shuey were DB Jonathan Scott of Daytona Beach, Fla., DB Justin Green of Louisville, Ky., OL Quinton Washington of Timberland, OL Jerquari Schofield of South Aiken, RB Tim Simon of Cordova, Ala., and LB Roderic Blunt of Miramar, Fla.

Green has been committed to Ohio State but had a very good visit at Clemson and is now deciding between the Tigers and Buckeyes.
Clemson tried to get QB Tajh Boyd of Hampton, Va., in for a visit this weekend, but after agreeing to do so, he decided not to come in so that he could catch up on some school work. At this point it does not appear he will visit and will choose soon between Ohio State and Oregon.

Green to sign with OSU
Male All-America defensive back Justin Green said the recruiting process is really over for him and that he'll sign with Ohio State.
"It's all done," said Green, who committed to the Buckeyes last summer but considered taking visits to other schools.
"Ohio State is the best decision for me and my family," he said. "I have always looked forward to playing for the Buckeyes since the fourth grade."
The 5-11, 180-pound Green, whose brother Marcus was a defensive lineman at OSU, played in the U.S. Army All-American Game this month.
