From people I have talked to he may be the real deal. His dad played for one of the class acts in football and in general. Watch out for Notre Dame, and if Charlie Weis discovers class and recruiting it may be a perfect fit. I don't think OSU is a possibility for a qb like this with Ohio State's catch this year.
One never knows tho.

Carmel QB emerges as hot property | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

The recruiting interest in Carmel quarterback Morgan Newton has surged since he led the Greyhounds to the Class 5A state championship in November.

Ranked as one of the elite quarterback prospects in the nation in his class, Newton recently spent time with some of the top college coaches in the South as part of his process to evaluate possible destinations.

The 6-4, 215-pound junior and his family talked with Phillip Fulmer at Tennessee, Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, Tommy Bowden at Clemson, Tom O'Brien at N.C. State, Al Groh at Virginia and Rich Brooks at Kentucky. Newton also visited North Carolina and Virginia.

The college visits came as part of a spring break trip to an elite basketball event in Virginia, the Boo Williams Invitational.

"For the most part, I was trying to gather information," Newton said. "It was a great trip. Having the family with me was a good thing. You can go to the campus, but that's not everything.

"I'm trying to learn more about those places."

Several places included personal touches. Newton had a conversation with Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart, sat in on a quarterbacks meeting with the coaching staff at Clemson, and saw Spurrier's 1966 Heisman Trophy and the 1998 national championship trophy in Fulmer's office.

Newton already has offers from Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Penn State, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, Clemson, South Carolina, Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia and Cincinnati.

Newton also talked to Florida coach Urban Meyer by phone Friday night.

Newton said he doesn't have a list of favorites but plans to narrow his options later this summer "when we see who is really, really interested."

Newton won't have to look far for guidance. His father, John Newton, is an assistant principal at Carmel who played for Eddie Robinson at Grambling.

"I'm looking at the people," Newton said. "One thing I picked up on the trip is that a lot of places have great facilities, but the people I'm going to be around is important -- the coaching staff, what's comfortable for me and my family.

"A lot of people think location is a big deal. For us, it's whatever fits best. It doesn't matter how far from Carmel, Indiana, it is."

Newton, who was listed among Rivals' 100 to watch for 2009, has been invited to the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp, and attended the U.S. Army National Combine in January at San Antonio.

As a junior, Newton completed 124-of-213 passes for 1,883 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He has attended a couple of showcase events for football since the season ended in November, but he's also good enough in basketball that he's playing with the SYF Players, a northern Indiana program that has included players such as Purdue's E'Twaun Moore and Robbie Hummel the past few years.

From the Clemson site....Clemson offensive coord Rob Spence will be visiting Morgan today. Coach Jay Paterno (PSU), Coach Phillips (Kentucky), Coach Mullen (Florida), Coach Johnson (Iowa) and Coach Mallery (Illinois) visited Morgan last night.

From the ND site...has had coaches visits from Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, Illinois, Clemson, Virginia, NC State, Michigan State, Ohio State and Florida. Isn't hearing from ND as much, but they are still in contact.

USC, Clemson Remain Players With Newton

 QB Morgan Newton (6-5 215) of Carmel, IN recently picked up offers from Maryland and Florida giving him a total of 16, including USC and Clemson. While he's not narrowed his list, when he gets around to do so, Newton feels USC and Clemson stand a good chance to "probably" survive the cut. USC quarterbacks coach David Reaves was at Newton's school Monday and watched him practice. "I think I did pretty well," he said. "I threw for about 45 minutes. Hopefully, he got to see what he wanted to see. They (USC) are very interested. Coach Reaves is trying to get to know me, and I'm getting to know them." Clemson quarterbacks coach Rob Spence was at the school about two weeks ago and Newton said he's been in touch with Spence and recruiter Billy Napier. "They are very personable people," he said. "Coach Spence talks about what he thinks Clemson can do for me and what I can do to help out there. They feel like they have a good steup for me there." Newton said coaches from Maryland, Nebraska and Penn State were by his school Thursday. He's also been called by Louisville and talked with Florida's Urban Meyer. He does not have any favorites and is not planning to attend any camps. He might take some visits in June.

With 19 scholarship offers to contemplate, Morgan Newton has seen his recruiting stock continue to rise since leading Carmel High School to the Class 5A state title last fall.

The sought-after senior-to-be is considered a five-star prospect by scout .com and one of the nation's top quarterbacks in his class.


"I take some of this recruiting stuff, and I look at it, and then I'll take a break from it and then look at it, just so I don't get burned out with it," said Newton, who lists his current leaders as Clemson, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Miami, Purdue and South Carolina, in no particular order.

Newton Goes Under Lights At Florida

 QB Morgan Newton (6-5 215) of Indianapolis was one of the prospects who attended Florida's Friday Night Lights camp Friday where he said he got a chance to throw to some of the top receiver prospects in the country. "It was fun in that respect," Newton said. "It was pretty fun, that Friday Night atmosphere." Newton aldo has taken recent visits to Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky and Illinois. "I had been to all before except Florida," Newton said. "I knew what to expect." Newton has no more trips planned for the summer and he's still mulling over his short list of Clemson, USC, Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, Illinois, Florida and Miami. Newton said he's not talked to many coaches over the summer and plans to contact Clemson's Rob Spence and USC's David Reaves in the near future. He still claims no favorites.

I know it was extremely hot on Saturday, but Newton wasn't all that overly impressive against Cathedral. He got out played in the first half by a first time starter at QB for Cathedral and was lucky that the Cathedral DB dropped the pick in the second half that probably would have cost them the game.

That being said, he is a big kid with lots of potential.....
