PERRY TWP. Two high school basketball coaches are turning to technology for more clarity on how Perry High School junior Kenny Frease suffered serious facial injuries Saturday. Central Catholic head coach Kevin Finefrock reviewed with media Tuesday his enhanced DVD of a tape from his team's home game Saturday with Perry. Finefrock wants to "vindicate" Central senior Cory Berry for the blow he delivered to Frease as the two pursued a dead-ball rebound moments after a foul was called on Berry.
Frease suffered two broken bones in his right orbital socket and possible serious damage to his right eyelid.

Perry star's injury won't spur charge

Massillon prosecutor finds evidence lacking

By Bill Lilley

Beacon Journal staff writer

PERRY TWP. - The serious eye injuries suffered by Perry High School junior center Kenny Frease in a basketball game at Central Catholic on Saturday are no longer a law-enforcement issue as far as Perry Police Chief Tim Escola and Massillon Prosecutor John Simpson are concerned.
The 7-foot Frease, ranked by Scout.com as the 25th-best junior in the nation, suffered two fractures in the orbital bone of his right eye and a broken nose when he was contesting a rebound with Central Catholic senior shooting guard Cory Berry in the third quarter.

Boys basketball report

Report is good for Perry player

Center's return still uncertain; eye healing

By Bill Lilley

Beacon Journal staff writer

PERRY TWP. - Perry junior basketball star Kenny Frease received good news concerning his right eye Thursday afternoon from an ophthalmologist.
That doesn't mean the 7-foot center, one of the nation's top recruits in his class, will be cleared to play in the near future, however.

PERRY TWP. A "pretty good visit" to the doctor earlier this week gives Kenny Frease hope of a return to the basketball court before the season ends.

The 7-foot Perry High School junior, out with two broken bones in his right orbital socket, could return for the sectional tournament opener at the end of the month.

Perry?s Frease to make return
Tuesday, February 20, 2007
By CHRIS BEAVEN

PERRY TWP. Being tired never felt so good to Kenny Frease.

His exhaustion Monday meant the Perry High School junior was back doing what he loves to do ? playing basketball. The 7-foot Frease returned to practice just over two weeks after breaking two bones in his right orbital socket and will play in Perry?s first tournament game.

?It was awesome,? Frease said. ?It was fun to get back out there. But it was tiring, I?m out of shape again. I was just getting back in shape from the wrist (injury), and then I get hurt again.?

Frease returns to lead Perry
Tuesday, February 27, 2007
By CHRIS BEAVEN

CANTON Not much seems to go as planned for the Perry High School boys basketball team this season.

The Panthers got their star center back for Monday?s Division I sectional game at Memorial Civic Center only to lose another starter to injury.

But in what?s become one of their trademarks, the Panthers pressed on, overcame some ugly stretches and beat Marietta, 50-38. Perry (11-10) advances to Friday?s sectional final against McKinley.

TUBBY SEES FREASE

Kentucky Head Coach Tubby Smith watched Perry's win over McKinley. He got to see Panthers 7-foot center Kenny Frease score a game-high 22 points in his second game back since an eye injury early last month.

"Tubby is a great guy," Frease said. "I had a lot of fun on that visit. They texted me earlier in the week and said they were coming. They flew in (Friday) on a private jet."

That's a pretty good indication that Kentucky loves Frease, just a junior.

CANTON All of Perry Township seemed jammed into the cramped quarters of their locker room.

Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends poured in and surrounded them as the temperature soared.

The Perry Panthers soaked it all in. Why not?

A boys basketball tournament run that once looked impossible continues. Perry knocked out another favorite in the Division I field at Memorial Civic Center, beating third-seeded Hoover, 67-56, in a district semifinal Wednesday.

?Crazy? win for Perry
Saturday, March 3, 2007
By CHRIS BEAVEN

Perry junior Kenny Frease (right) celebrates with senior Greg Fite moments after Friday?s overtime upset of McKinley.

CANTON All Greg Fite wanted to see was the basketball splash through the net.

?I was hoping it was good as soon as I released it,? Fite said of his running 3-pointer from the left side. ?I thought it looked good.?

When the shot dropped through the net Friday ? as the buzzer sounded on Perry?s 49-48 overtime upset of two-time defending state champion McKinley ? Fite didn?t know what to feel as teammates mobbed him.

?It was crazy,? Fite said.

About half of the 3,701 fans inside Memorial Civic Center erupted as the shot went in. The rest were too stunned to react to the ending of this Division I boys basketball sectional final.

?I don?t know any words to explain how great I?m feeling right now,? said Perry 7-foot junior Kenny Frease, who endured a season filled with ups and downs to lead his team with 22 points Friday.

somebody is getting a very nice player in kenny. hes a very good passer out of post, maybe one of the best in the state. has a decent shot. plays very well with his back to the basket. doesnt play on a stellar team and maybe is impacted by that some. has good hands for a big man and good feet. his conditioning is suspect (something i think you can only expect from a kid who is recovery from a major injrury). id be shocked to see him end up in columbus (no matter what, even with guys leaving early and what not) though, someone is going to get a nice player. b10 caliber kid at this point. (granted its early on) plays a true 5.

Frease commits to Musketeers
Third recruit from class of 2008
BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

Kenny Frease, a 6-foot-11 center regarded among the top 10 big men in the country in the class of 2008, called Xavier coach Sean Miller Tuesday night.
"I told him, I want to be Xavier's Greg Oden," Frease said.
And with that, the Massillon (Ohio) Perry junior orally committed to Xavier, giving the Musketeers their third - and biggest - 2008 commitment the past week.
