Vindy.com - Senior quarterback-running back Sal Battles accounted for 14 points and 165 total yards.

Leading the way for East were seniors Sal Battles and Gary Thornton, in addition to an offensive line that opened the holes and an opportunistic defense that foiled two Fitch touchdown threats.

Battles scored one TD on a 48-yard run in the third quarter, connected to senior wide receiver Jeff Purdie on a 47-yard scoring pass and added the a conversion run in the second quarter, and accounted for 165 total yards, He finished with 104 yards rushing in 24 carries and 4-for-4 passing for 61 yards.

Offensively, the Panthers opened the scoring on a 51-yard scoring pass from Sal Battles to Jeff Purdie in the final minute of the first quarter. A bobbled snap left the score at 6-0.

Gary Thornton, the Panthers’ top rusher, gained 51 yards on 14 carries. Battles was 9-of-17 passing for 165 yards

The Panthers started the ensuing possession at their 14. Battles scrambled for 16 yards, found Purdie for 20 yards on a deep crossing pattern, and then threw deep from 45 yards away to RonCarlos Hilton.

On the two-point conversion, Battles fired a bullet to Ray Catley in the front corner of the end zone to make the score 17-14 with 2:58 to play.

Senior quarterback Sal Battles threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns to lead East. Senior running back Gary Thornton added 88 yards rushing, while Jamayle Roland had 110 yards receiving and a TD.
