Ezeli is waiting on the NCAA clearinghouse to determine his eligibility. There is a chance he will select a school in time to be on campus this fall or possibly go the prep school route. Florida, DePaul, Vanderbilt and Pepperdine are just a few schools that have indicated they would take him this fall while Cal, Ohio State, Oregon State, UCLA, West Virginia and Creighton have offered for the 2008 class.

He said he spent the last collegiate year at Yuba College taking science courses. Festus Ezeli didn't play basketball, which could be a bit surprising to some considering his 6-foot-10 stature.

However, Ezeli is not your average 6-10 17-year-old. He never has seen "Gunsmoke," although he has heard of it quite often. He's actually Festus Jr.

"This summer, I've heard from Ohio State, Florida, USC, Cal and UCLA. I went on a three-way visit to UConn, Vanderbilt and (Boston College) and then also Harvard. I've also heard from UNLV and (Pacific)," Ezeli said. "It's been crazy, but it's been nice to be wanted."

Coveted hoops recruit signs with Vandy

Festus Ezeli, a 6-foot-11, 250-pound center from Marysville, Calif., verbally committed to the Vanderbilt basketball team Monday and signed a letter-of-intent Tuesday, The City Paper has learned.

He will be eligible to play during the 2007-08 season but is expected to redshirt. He will be one of six incoming freshmen in VU's class of 2007.
