Indeed...but it always makes me pause when an OOS kid makes his official to watch his local team play.

Let's hope he enjoys the atmosphere, connects with the staff and players, and we pay back PSU in a big way.:biggrin:

Blankenship is from PA and he will likely be at that game...maybe the two can talk about what it means to leave PA and move to God's country!

I hear you...and I am prolly being a little silly.

I think we beat PSU..but if there is local pressure to give them a look, if he knows a few kids on the PSU squad, and the Nits come into Cbus and look great...I just get a little nervous.

Hell, I worry about everything swo don't mind me....I just would prefer that when a kid comes into OSU he doesn't get a look at the local team at the same time....kinda like Barksdale visiting UT for the OSU game (an extreme example...). Maybe there is no risk..but why expose him to the local option even if he isn't currently interested in them? Of course if we pound them...well it can work both ways. :tongue2:

I realize this might be a silly detail and lord knows he is going to see the OSU home environment just about at it's peak...but I like it when the team on the other sideline has absolutely no connection to the recruits.

I am overstating my concern here..it was just a small comment and not something that is keeping me up at night or a visit I think should be rescheduled.

A number of the top recruits from the WPIAL, such as Aliquippa's Jonathan Baldwin and Brandon Lindsey, Rochester's Derek Moye, Laurel Highlands' Kaleb Ramsey, Penn Hills' Joe Rash and Gateway's Shayne Hale, who Pitt offered a scholarship to yesterday, were at practice.

Newly hired Ryan Matsook hasn't coached a game at Beaver Falls yet, but he already knows the landscape of the Midwestern Conference. "Aliquippa is the front-runner," he said.
Matsook and the rest of the coaches will have their sights on a familiar target in the conference, which grew to nine teams with the addition of Sto-Rox during the offseason realignment.
"The Quips have been the standard for a few years now," Beaver coach Jeff Beltz said. "That's pretty much the case this season."

Aliquippa returns the bulk of last year's conference co-champion and adds standout linebacker Tariq Taylor, a transfer from Class A power Rochester, to the best defense in the Midwestern. The Quips also are motivated by the bitter aftertaste of last year's first-round dismissal from the WPIAL Class AA playoffs, losing, 7-0, to Washington.
They are blessed with a host of skill players, led by 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior tailback Brandon Lindsey, a Division I prospect who rushed for 1,235 yards and 19 touchdowns last season; running back Daron Cox (555 yards, 4 TDs) and 6-4, 195-pound Jonathan Baldwin, one of the state's elite junior tight ends.
The biggest question mark is quarterback, where converted wide receivers Antonio Reddic and D'mar Jeter are splitting time.
While Aliquippa is the favorite, the Midwestern was young last year -- nearly half of the all-conference selections were underclassmen -- and virtually every team is expected to be improved this season.
Center and Beaver are the leading candidates to take down Aliquippa, which opens at Beaver County rival Ambridge and former coach Don Yannessa before traveling to Sto-Rox for the Midwestern opener.
Center owns one of the best lines in Class AA, with Ohio State recruit Evan Blankenship (6-4, 315) and second-team all-state selection Nate Glasser (6-0, 267).
Beaver returns quarterback Manny Cutlip and running back Alex George from a team that thrashed Aliquippa, 36-0, last year.
"Our league should be loaded," Aliquippa coach Mike Zmijanac said. "There will be a couple teams who won't make the playoffs who will be very good."
Not everyone is expecting a deep postseason run. Matsook, the 29-year-old nephew of Rochester coach Gene Matsook, is taking over a rebuilding Beaver Falls team. The Tigers lost 21 seniors.
"We're starting from scratch, and we need to take it slow," Matsook said. "We don't have a choice in the matter."

Living up to the hype

A loss in the first round of the 2005 playoffs was almost as important to Aliquippa coach Mike Zmijanac as any of his postseason victories. "We didn't have too many expectations going into last season," said Zmijanac, whose squad was 8-2. "Of course, you are never happy to lose, but I was pleased with how we played, especially because we had so many young players who started. I have always told my teams that as long as they give all they can give, then I will always be proud of them."
Zmijanac may have much to be happy about this season. His team returns seven starters on defense, an eighth player who contributed and five on offense, including talented running back Brandon Lindsey and tight end Jonathan Baldwin. Lindsey rushed for 1,235 yards and 19 touchdowns on 166 carries. He and fellow Division I prospect Baldwin, who is ranked as one of the top 100 players from the Class of 2007 in the east by Sporting News School Sports, bring a potent element to the Quips' offense.
The two remember last year's first-round loss, but they know teams will be ready to play their best games against Aliquippa because of the program's history.


Aliquippa has the best record of all WPIAL teams in the past 20 seasons (199-46-1). "We have to live up to the hype," Baldwin said. "We know what we need to do, and we have been practicing hard because we don't want to lose in the first round."
Lindsey said he and Baldwin want to be the leaders, and they know the younger players look to them for guidance.
"We must lead by example," said Lindsey, who was an all-conference nose guard his sophomore season.
That example was clear the first day of camp at California (Pa.) University. The two were at the front of the field leading the stretches and then gave some of the hardest hits once the players lined up.
"Camp is crazy and intense," Baldwin said. "There isn't much time to do anything, but practice and sleep. It is real competitive because everyone wants to start, and we all want to carry on the tradition of Aliquippa football."
That tradition has been started in training camps, where the Quips spend the first week away from home to eliminate distractions.
"We aren't used to losing in the first round, and working hard in camp is a way to make sure we are prepared so that doesn't happen again," Baldwin said. "That loss hurt."
Zmijanac said having players such as Baldwin and Lindsey will give the offense a solid start. Early in camp, seniors Antonio Reddic and D'Mar Jeter and sophomore Rasheem Jones were competing for the quarterback spot.
The eventual starter will complement Baldwin and Lindsey.
"Brandon is a very bright kid who knows the game," Zmijanac said. "He works so hard. I wish I had lots of players like him. Jonathan is going to be a very good player. He's fast and has all the skills to play this game well."
