Though he lives in the heart of Ohio State country, where 49 players from his high school have played football for the Buckeyes, Skylar Jones' own heart is set on playing quarterback in college.

Because Coach Jim Grobe of Wake Forest promised him that chance, Jones, a 6-1, 182-pound quarterback from Middletown High School, was one of two high-school seniors who committed this weekend to play for the Deacons.

The other was Brandon Pendergrass, a 5-9, 181-pound running back from Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) High School.

Jones, who chose Wake Forest over Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois, Tennessee, Cincinnati, and West Virginia, is ranked the No. 49 athlete by rivals.com.

Pendergrass, who chose Wake Forest over Georgia Tech, Duke, Minnesota, Northwestern and Vanderbilt, is ranked the No. 13 all-purpose back by rivals.com.

"We have a great relationship with Ohio State," Coach Ron Johnson of Middletown High School said. "But at the same time, Skylar is his own guy and he wants to play quarterback.

"Knowing that Coach Grobe and his staff were looking to move toward that type of offense - really getting the quarterback involved on the perimeter and in the run game - that was a really big selling point for him.

"Now, Skylar throws it pretty good."

Good enough to complete 145 of 299 passes last season for 1,974 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also ran for 600 yards, using speed coveted by the four Big Tech schools among others.

Johnson disputes the report that Jones' time in the 40-yard dash is 4.4 seconds. "At the Nike combine, which is only electronic timing at Ohio State University, he ran a 4.30," Johnson said. "That's about as accurate as you can get, being on the electronic timer with the laser eye.

"He had the fastest time in America in the Nike combine."

Jones is the state champion in the 300-meter hurdles and finished second in the state in the 110 hurdles.

Pendergrass gained 950 yards last season on 110 carries while splitting time at running back with Zack Brown. Coach Eric Patterson of Royal Palm Beach High School said that Wake Forest benefited from Pendergrass' friendship with Alphonso Smith and Antonio Wilson, two Deacons who played a nearby Pahokee High School.

"He's a lot like Emmitt Smith," Patterson said. "He's quick in the hole, but he does have that breakaway speed. He's a 4.4 kid.

"He's shifty. He's got moves and soft hands - everything you would want."
