'07 OH QB/ATH Skylar Jones (Wake Forest Verbal)

I'm surprised we haven't offered this guy... even as an athlete, if not at qb. With our staff's player development, they could turn him into a good db or wr. I just stumbled along his statistics again. He threw for nearly 2000 yds and had another 600 some yards rushing. Plus, he ran a 1st place 4.3 40yd dash at the OSU Nike camp and then got a Div 1 hurdles title at the state track meets. Plus, he's still got his senior year ahead of him. Could this be a "late offer" guy if he does well this year??

Middies sharp in win over Valley View

By Skip Weaver

Staff Writer
GERMANTOWN — Tyler Amos visualizes the kind of game he wants to have every night.
At Barker Field in Germantown Friday, he had the kind of game he’s been dreaming of for a while.
Amos had one fumble recovery for a touchdown and one interception as Middletown rolled to a 40-6 win over host Valley View in the final preseason scrimmage before the Middies’ season opener at Hilliard Davidson.
“Josh Wilson knocked the ball loose,” Amos said of his fumble recovery. “Once I picked it up all I thought about was the end zone. That got me real excited.”
The teams played two full quarters before giving way to the junior varsity players in the third period.
The varsity squads returned to the field for a fourth quarter that consisted of each team getting two sets of eight plays on offense.
They then played one possession each in an overtime setting.
Penalty Box
Middletown was flagged seven times for 64 yards, compared to one penalty for five yards for the Spartans.
Stock Rising I
Brandon Ramsey caught two passes in the game, both for touchdowns. The first came on a 23-yard pass from Skylar Jones for the Middies first score.
After Middletown got a turnover, Ramsey grabbed 24-yarder for a 13-0 lead.
Stock Rising II
Despite the lopsided loss, Valley View’s Chris Cason found the end zone on a 2-yard burst midway through the second quarter for the Spartans only touchdown of the first half.
Quotable
“In probably 80 snaps tonight, we didn’t turn the ball over. We haven’t had any turnovers this preseason. That’s very encouraging.”

Though he lives in the heart of Ohio State country, where 49 players from his high school have played football for the Buckeyes, Skylar Jones' own heart is set on playing quarterback in college.
Because Coach Jim Grobe of Wake Forest promised him that chance, Jones, a 6-1, 182-pound quarterback from Middletown High School, was one of two high-school seniors who committed this weekend to play for the Deacons.
The other was Brandon Pendergrass, a 5-9, 181-pound running back from Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) High School.
Jones, who chose Wake Forest over Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois, Tennessee, Cincinnati, and West Virginia, is ranked the No. 49 athlete by rivals.com.
Pendergrass, who chose Wake Forest over Georgia Tech, Duke, Minnesota, Northwestern and Vanderbilt, is ranked the No. 13 all-purpose back by rivals.com.
"We have a great relationship with Ohio State," Coach Ron Johnson of Middletown High School said. "But at the same time, Skylar is his own guy and he wants to play quarterback.
"Knowing that Coach Grobe and his staff were looking to move toward that type of offense - really getting the quarterback involved on the perimeter and in the run game - that was a really big selling point for him.
"Now, Skylar throws it pretty good."
Good enough to complete 145 of 299 passes last season for 1,974 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also ran for 600 yards, using speed coveted by the four Big Tech schools among others.
Johnson disputes the report that Jones' time in the 40-yard dash is 4.4 seconds. "At the Nike combine, which is only electronic timing at Ohio State University, he ran a 4.30," Johnson said. "That's about as accurate as you can get, being on the electronic timer with the laser eye.
"He had the fastest time in America in the Nike combine."
Jones is the state champion in the 300-meter hurdles and finished second in the state in the 110 hurdles.
Pendergrass gained 950 yards last season on 110 carries while splitting time at running back with Zack Brown. Coach Eric Patterson of Royal Palm Beach High School said that Wake Forest benefited from Pendergrass' friendship with Alphonso Smith and Antonio Wilson, two Deacons who played a nearby Pahokee High School.
"He's a lot like Emmitt Smith," Patterson said. "He's quick in the hole, but he does have that breakaway speed. He's a 4.4 kid.
"He's shifty. He's got moves and soft hands - everything you would want."
