Mentor's football team enjoyed some success during Steve Matas' first two seasons as a starter. The 2006 season, though, has been special for Matas and his Cardinals teammates.
"This has just been an amazing year," said Matas, a two-way lineman. "I couldn't have asked for anything better.
"We've played in Cleveland Browns Stadium and now we get to play there again. We're playing in big-time games where everybody in the com munity is watching. It's been an unbelievable ex perience."
Mentor (10-1) plays a Division I regional semi final game against Glen ville (10-1) on Saturday. It will be the second time this season the teams have played at the stadium. The Cardinals defeated the Tarblooders, 15-13, in the season opener.
The 6-5, 270-pound Matas, who has made an oral commitment to play college football at Illinois, started on defense the past two years as Mentor went a combined 13-7 but failed to make the playoffs. This season, Matas has continued to flourish at defensive tackle. He also has become a mainstay on offense, starting the first five games at tackle and the past six games at guard.
Matas' superb play has helped Mentor outscore its opponents, 270-77, during its current seven-game winning streak.
"Steve is a big, strong kid who plugs up the middle on defense," Cardinals coach Steve Trivisonno said. "Offensively, his speed, footwork and long arms make him a very good blocker."
Mentor's linemen have other positive qualities, too.
"There's a lot of trust in our lines," said Matas, who has a 3.2 grade-point average. "Our team is close. We feed off of each other, trust each other and know where each other is. We can react to game situations because of that."
