'07 OH DE Ben Martin (Tennessee signee)

Am I looking into this way too much, but ND wants Martin as a LB and he will be playing LB in HS now. Maybe his coach knows that he is going to ND and wants to get him as many reps as possible there. Or is Lasalle very thin at the LB spot and need him to play there for the team to have a succesful year?

The reason for Martin playing LB has little to do with his recruitment by the Irish. I have this on good information. As a DE in high school, it is just easier for teams to run away from his side of the field. At ILB he will be free to be creative and teams can't scheme away from one half of the field. This was actually talked about last year at LaSalle as a way for Ben to become an even bigger factor on defense....but I assure you, he prefers DE.

The people I've talked to from LaSalle said he was playing LB because defenses would just try to run away from his side at DE(as I believe I stated earlier in this thread but I'll repeat it). Being at LB frees him up to make more plays.

Ben Martin down to ...

La Salle DE/LB Ben Martin lists Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, Tennessee and .... "Penn State, a little bit," as his college possibles. I chatted with Martin yesterday out at La Salle.

Martin says he has made unofficial visits to all the above schools, except for Penn State. Martin is from Gary, Ind., a short drive from Notre Dame. His Mom lives in Gary and wouldn't mind seeing Ben at ND, but the player remains unsure.

"I want to take all my officials (visits) first and see how it plays out," he said.

Martin was a DE last year but will move to LB this year, with La Salle coaches believing Martin will best help their defense in a standup role for 2006. In college, Martin expects to be a down lineman.

I always get a bit nervous when a school all of a sudden pops out of nowhere. Especially one like PSU that has enjoyed substantial recent recruiting success against us recently.

Don't be...it will be OSU or ND. Also, good to hear confirmation on the position switch. Proves the sources have been pretty credible thus far.
