A recruiting diary: David Arnold's thoughts
Editor's note: Thoughts, recollections and impressions about the recruiting process as experienced by Copley junior David Arnold and told to Akron Beacon Journal sportswriter Gary Estwick.

PHONE CALLS

I was tired after the regional track meet, so I wanted to go to sleep on the bus ride back to the school. But my phone rang, and it was a coach from Purdue. So we talked for a few minutes.

So then I got off the phone and went to sleep. We get to the school, I go get my car, I drive home, and as soon as I stuck my foot in the door, the (home) phone was ringing. It's a coach from Boston College. He was telling me that they were thinking about me, they’re really interested. They’re slow with the offers, but they have to do some more evaluating, and the coaches are going to get together and there’s a good chance they’ll be calling me with some good news.

So I’m on the phone talking to him, and the phone rings on the other line. It’s the coach from Toledo. I asked the Boston College coach could he hold on for a moment. So I click over and it’s the Toledo coach – he’s a good friend with my uncle in Warren – I asked him could he call back in 10 minutes. I told him I was on the other line.

So I click back over the talk to the Boston College coach; we finish over conversation.

Ten minutes later, the phone rings. It’s the Toledo coach. He asks me who I was talking to. I told him it was actually a coach from Boston College. So he’s like, "Ah, you’re big time! Too big for Toledo!"

He was just joking.

It was interesting, a new experience. A coach calling me, and then another coach calling at the same time.

UNOFFICIAL VISIT TO PENN STATE

We arrive at Penn State. We’re walking to the building where we’re supposed to go meet with coach Jay Paterno. And we look over and stepping out of this white Impala are Michigan coaches. I was like, Ah, mom, those are Michigan coaches right there! The Nike camp was going on, so all these coaches were there. I was not participating because I was tired from track from the day before. They come over and say hi. I tell them that I’m not participating in the camp. They were like, it’s good to see you.

So we go in, meet the Penn State coaches. We’re going on a tour with one of the other staff members. And we go down the stairs and look out a window and the Illinois coach was there that’s recruiting me, Purdue was there, Syracuse was there. They were all just in a circle, talking. It was just weird to see them all right there.

Frank said being there felt like he was cheating on his wife.

NEW POSITION IN FALL

The coaching staff at school said they’re looking into me playing quarterback next season. We would do a lot of cool things out of the shotgun formation. I’ve never played quarterback before, but I have a strong arm – I played center field in baseball, so I’m pretty accurate. My mom doesn’t want me to play quarterback; she thinks I could get hurt. But that can happen at any position, on any play. I think I’ll be all right. I’m still going to play safety, too.

From reading the last two posts, I hope things pan out between tOSU and David. Sounds like a great kid from a great family. Copley is in the Summit/Stark county hotbed, excellent football from youth football on up.

Copley football standout receives scholarship offer

Beacon Journal staff report

David Arnold, a safety/receiver at Copley High School, participated in his first senior football camp Sunday morning at Eastern Michigan University.
Several years earlier, David played Pee Wee football on the same field. This time he left Ypsilanti, Mich., with more than a good workout.
David, who has been the subject of the Akron Beacon Journal's look at college recruiting, has received another offer to play Division I football.
On Monday morning, David will participate at the University of Michigan's football camp.

A recruiting diary: David Arnold's thoughts

Editor's note: Thoughts, recollections and impressions about the recruiting process as experienced by Copley High School senior-to-be David Arnold and told to Akron Beacon Journal sportswriter Gary Estwick.
Arnold, a safety/receiver at Copley, arrived in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Monday morning for his second senior football camp in as many days. On Sunday, he left Eastern Michigan with a scholarship offer. Would his visit to the University of Michigan be as productive?

June 19: A long day in Michigan

We went into the indoor facility to do the 40-yard dash and vertical jump. My jump was 36-6 and I ran a 40 in 4.57 (electric timing). I ran a 4.3 something (hand-timed) in my track spikes. We then went into the weight room. We really didn’t have to lift anything, but they wanted us to stay busy. There was a 225-pound test that was optional to see who could lift it the most amount times. I didn't do it.
Then we went to lunch. I went with a select few that had lunch with the coaches in the team meeting room. We watched the Michigan game from this past season against Iowa.
After lunch -– there was a delay because of lightening -– I went with the other cornerbacks. It was receivers against DBs. I did OK -- we didn't do a lot of that at my school. Eugene Clifford was there, one of the top DBs in the country. He already has an offer from Michigan.
We did that for quite awhile. We took a team picture, and that was pretty much the camp day.
I had to wait around to talk to coach (Lloyd) Carr. There were some guys over there, so I had to wait my turn to talk to him. He said to keep doing good work in the class, and that they’re going to wait until the beginning of my senior season and evaluate my first couple of games and if everything goes well, they'll offer me then.
Physically, I'm tired between today and yesterday. Mentally, too. Overall, I didn't think it was too bad. It was a long day. We didn't get done till about 5 o'clock, and it started around 10.
I'm not disappointed. I think I did all right. Pretty decent day.
I'll be in Columbus on Friday for the one-day OSU senior camp.

June 18: My day at Eastern Michigan

We got to Eastern Michigan around 9 o'clock to check in. There were a lot of people there from Ohio, a couple of familiar faces. Ted Jones, the tight end from Buchtel. Kade Wagner, the quarterback/ safety from Green, and a running back from Green, Evan Elliot. After registration, I saw my recruiting coordinator, Coach (Scott) Weaver. I shook hands with him and he introduced me to a few coaches.
It brought back some memories of when I played Pee Wee football here. (David was a member of the Junior Wolverines).
I did some warm-up drills that I learned during the track season. Everybody took a knee and the head coach (Jeff Genyk) spoke to us. Then we did some stretching, a couple of drills and broke off into our positions. I went with the DBs.
The first thing we did was the shuttle. I didn't really run too good. The playing surface on the field, I didn't really like it. People were slipping. I ran a 4.6 in the shuttle. It wasn't really good at all, at least I don't think so. The next thing we did was the 40-yard dash. I ran a 4.57.
I measured at 6-foot, 188 pounds.
After that, we moved to the kick return. After a few minutes, I caught a couple of punts. I then moved to individual work. One-on-one coverage against routes. I did OK in that. One guy caught a pass.
After that was over, everybody huddled up. The head coach talked to us for a few minutes.
Coach Weaver brought me over to the head coach (Genyk). He said they were offering me a scholarship. They really were interested in me. That was exciting.
As we were leaving, Coach Weaver took me and my mom on a short campus tour.
Today definitely let me know what to expect and how to prepare for camp tomorrow (at the University of Michigan). Tomorrow, I shouldn't be too surprised. We might do a couple more things like the bench press and vertical leap.
I know right now, I'm tired and I need to get some rest.
