'07 MD LB Pat Lazear (West Virginia signee)

We are NOT recruiting Pat Lazear... This info is from several places now...

Several sources state that we ARE recruiting Pat Lazear, including a Scout national recruiting analyst and a BN analyst...yet we are not according to the AD. If Lazear doesn't end up at OSU, you can believe it was because of his own doing, but that USA Today article certainly didn't help. The media today is so unfair is it unreal.

So are we or are we not?

Although NCAA rules forbid statements about the recruits status, there are other ways to get the message out. The Maryland athletic dept didn't have any problem. They merely discussed their emphasis on character and the message was sent. The kid himself has stated that some schools have dumped him, but not OSU and Bama. At this point I dont care if the kid is as pure as the driven snow, OSU doesn't need this type of pub. Perception, unfortunately, is everything in this area. There are plenty of great kids all over the country without any baggage, real or perceived. If this kid even shows up on an official visit in October, it's a huge blackeye. It's time for OSU to distance itself from this recruit. If you want to try and kid yourself and think this isn't a blackeye on the program, you are mistaken.
I'm dismayed at how many people are more concerned with the "perception of the program" than with fairness toward a young man who has not been found guilty of anything. He sure is a lightning rod for criticism by a bunch of pundits who may or may not have a clue.

I'm not saying that Mr. Lazear warrants an OSU scholarship offer, or that he doesn't. What I'm saying is that fan speculation over whether he deserves one is inappropriate, since right now all we have to go by is media reports and rumors. I believe Jim Tressel is more concerned about what's best for the team and for the young man than in media perception, and I support his decision whatever it may be.

I hear what you are saying and i'm sure that Tressel will do the right thing. "In Tress we Trust."

However, I feel that this would be a bad time to bring aboard anyone that could bring a good deal of "baggage" with him. Our program is at the top and has enough bad press the past few years. IMO we are slowly changing our public image back to 100% positive. Why jeopardize that?

It's ironic that opposing views are now called specualtion, not discussion. Trying to micromanage opinions on a message board is like giving speeding tickets at the Indy 500. It its' not "appropriate" to discuss a topic, then a message board or forum fails at it's intended purpose. When it gets to the point were fans can't question the coaching staff or the University, there is a bigger problem than Mr Lazear's conduct. There is no bigger supporter of Jim Tressel or OSU than myself, HOWEVER, I wouldn't blindly accept, "any decision whatever it may be". In this instance, the toothpaste is already out of the tube and damage to OSU has already been done. I hope they can stop the bleeding now and not have to endure months of articles that portray OSU in a negative light.

Very little damage to Ohio State at this point.

IMHO, too many Buckeye fans love for the program to be under the media microscope, and then in response to express their righteous indignation on message boards, talk shows, letters to the editors, etc. The whole ESPN-MoC thing; the Alamo Bowl coverage; May-Alberts-Corso-Kornheiser-Bayless-Rome-Herbie-etc. "disrespecting" the Buckeyes; Nick Lachey signing "Hail to the Victors"; and now this tempest in a teapot. Maybe it's best just to ignore the "traditional" media, and realize two things: (1) they shoot at Ohio State because it is a big target (would you rather be Kent State?); and (2) their negative publicity (i.e., "pot stirring") is largely designed to provoke exactly the reaction that it is getting.

Honestly the fact that bugs me is that they blatently put it out there in an article about his favorites.

I agree that that is what they are given from Pat or his father or whoever, but it is recruiting and honestly they have no idea truth or not, especially with the schools not being able to talk about a recruit.

IMO if I am looking for football recruiting the USAtoday is not the first place I look, so if there is something about a recruit in there my first thought is wow so and so must be a top 10 player to actually have an article about him. So then to find out that all these other schools stopped recruiting him, but this school and that school hasnt it makes the school look like they have a win at all cost attitude. Also I have seen threads on message boards(no names) with titles that state "tOSU recruiting a felon".

Honestly I think this is one of those things where the writer didnt do enough homework and just ran with the story. Never seen that happen before.:!

Also from what I have heard and seen I do not believe we are persuing him at this time.

The only thing I agree with is there hasn't been too much damage YET. But articles in national publications shouldn't be treated as trivial, in regards to the image of the University and team. I'm one of the biggest critics of the media and their tactics, but this isn't the fault of the media. The "whole ESPN-MoC thing", as you called it, hurt the university. It's not "righteous indignation" to demand integrity. I could care less about Tresselgate(voting) or Nick Lachey singing. You do have to make distinctions between ESPiN's rants and real issues. This is a real issue. Some issues you can't control, but this one can be controlled. OSU has to walk away from this guy, it's that simple. If they aren't recruiting him, they need to make this known, in the indirect way that the Maryland athletic dept used. There is no recruit, regardless of his ranking, that is worth any more damage to OSU, IMO.

You are proving my points....
