Stellar running backs highlight 2007 class

When all is done, about 375 Floridians will sign Division I-A football scholarships for this fall, and most observers believe the class of 2007 will be much stronger.

It's a class with three nationally coveted running backs (Hialeah-Miami Lakes' Armando Allen, North Fort Myers' Noel Devine and Lakeland's Chris Rainey) and a ton of superb defensive backs. It's a class with numerous big offensive linemen. And it's a class that demonstrates just how good Lakeland can be.

Remember, this is a pre-spring evaluation and is just one man's opinion based on talking to college and high school coaches. A lot can happen between spring football and the kickoff of the season in the fall.

OFFENSE

QB: Steven Garcia (6-3/190), Tampa Jefferson: Played in shadow of rival Jarred Fayson for two years, and now it's his time in the sun.

RB: Armando Allen (5-10/185), Hialeah-Miami Lakes: All-Dade pick with 1,100 rushing yards last season.

RB: Noel Devine (5-8/175), North Fort Myers: Has all the tools for success, including uncanny vision, but must improve in the classroom.

RB: Chris Rainey (5-9/171), Lakeland: A most dangerous runner for state 5A champs, he also finished second in the state last year in the 100 meters.

WR: Dion Lecorn (5-11/200), Ocala Trinity Catholic: Great speed and playmaking capability. Also a big-time kick returner.

WR: Deonte Thompson (6-2/180), Belle Glade Glades Central: Ran 10.38 100-meter dash as sophomore, caught 12 TD passes as junior.

TE: D'Angelo McCray (6-5/268), Jacksonville Jackson: Two-way talent who also can play defensive end.

OL: Branden Curry (6-4/325), Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson: Earned All-Broward first-team honors as a junior.

OL: Emeka Nwankwo (6-5/290), Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna: Best blocker for one of the biggest and best offensive lines to ever play in a Class 2A state championship game.

OL: LaShawn Pouncey (6-4/270), Lakeland: Best blocker on Dreadnaughts team that won mythical national prep title.

OL: Chris Sale (6-4/325), Niceville: Steady, unheralded contributor at a solid program.

You may have noticed that Florida's top running backs share a No. 1-ranking.

Listed in alphabetical order, Hialeah-Miami Lakes' Armando Allen, North Fort Myers' Noel Devine and Lakeland's Chris Rainey offer incredible speed, highlight-video moves and a penchant for excitement (for their fans) and heartbreak (for their opponents).

That trio highlights the Sentinel's preseason position breakdown of top recruits for the 2006 season.

As good as these guys are -- a strong case can be made that each is among the top 15 or so running backs in the nation -- they are on the small side, and some schools prefer bigger backs. Thus, Enrique Davis of Lynn Haven Mosley and Bo Williams of Oakland Park Northeast also are getting an awful lot of looks.

The number of top offensive linemen and defensive tackles appears to be larger than usual. There is a solid crop of secondary athletes, including big hitters such as Edgewater's Lorenzo Edwards at safety.

Northwestern High football player arrested in sex case

Three men, including a star member of Northwestern Senior High's football team, were arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious battery this afternoon by Miami police.
Miami police detectives said they arrested Antwain Easterling, 19, and two other men -- a 16-year-old and Jefferson Vincent Shannon, 24 -- after receiving a complaint of ``improper sexual conduct between a young lady and several men.''
Police did not disclose any further information about the alleged incident, though they did describe the encounters as "consensual.''
Earlier, police confirmed that the victim was 14 years old.
It's unclear if others are involved, but police said they are continuing their investigation. The charges against the three defendants are considered felonies.
Easterling, who is scheduled to play for the Class 6A state championship on Saturday night, was released from jail on bond Thursday, according his father, Enifel Joseph.
Joseph told The Miami Herald that he and his son would meet with Northwestern football coach Roland Smith on Friday.
Smith and Northwester Athletic Director Greg Killings deferred comment to the school principal, Dwight Bernard, who declined comment until the investigation is complete.
Northwestern, the top-ranked team in the state, faces Lake Brantley on Saturday in the Class 6A state championship game.

Wasn't sure where else to put this...from the Leonard Hankerson commitment article by the Herald:

One school that will no longer be welcome at St. Thomas, though, is the University of Alabama. [Head Coach George] Smith has sent a letter to the school president and athletic director after what he believes was the unfair firing of Mike Shula as coach.
