Five weeks ago, Barron Collier?s Matt Clements was on top of the high school football world.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior quarterback had just thrown a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give the Cougars a 17-16 lead in the season-opener against Lely.
Clements intercepted a pass on the ensuing possession to secure the victory. As sweat dripped down his forehead, staining Clements? No. 5 Barron jersey minutes after the game, the Cougar Stadium crowd was reminded why he was chosen to lead Barron to all things good and great in 2006.
On Monday, Clements cleaned out his locker along with teammate John Casselberry, and hasn?t returned to practice with the team since.
While head coach Billy Sparacio has said that Clements quit the team, Clements maintains the words ?I quit? never came out of his mouth.
?I really just felt unwelcomed,? he said. ?From what I was told, I wasn?t wanted on the team.?
Clements said he and Casselberry were suspended for Monday?s practice by Sparacio after leaving during their first period class to discuss issues they wanted to bring up with Sparacio.
?We basically didn?t know how to approach the situation, so I just called my mom and she told me we should just come back to the house,? Clements said. ?I was like ?What should I tell Coach about first block, and why we weren?t there?? She said ?Call him and tell him you had a doctor?s appointment and I?ll call him and tell him you came home.???
Clements said Sparacio found out that they didn?t have a doctor?s appointment and when his mom called to explain everything, Sparacio and his mom ?exchanged words.?
Both Clements and Casselberry were suspended from Monday?s practice, but Clements said he expected to return to practice the following day. They had already served an in-school suspension for skipping class, but Clements said he did not want to return after talking with his mother concerning her conversation with Sparacio. That?s when he and Casselberry cleaned out their lockers.
Sparacio said he spoke to Clements on Wednesday about a letter written by Clements and Casselberry that explained why they were no longer on the team. Before Monday?s practice, Sparacio said he spoke to the team about the situation.
Despite not having spoken with Sparacio about rejoining the team, Clements said he does want to play football for Barron again.
Clements, who is being recruited by Division I schools as a receiver, doesn?t think that sitting out the rest of the season will affect his scholarship offers.
He has recently been in contact with recruiters from Pittsburgh, South Carolina and West Virginia. Casselberry?s father, Steve Casselberry, said Clements was taking a leadership role in trying to talk his son into staying on the team.
?All the parents involved in this all agree that the boys made some mistakes,? Steve Casselberry said. ?Leaving campus was wrong and I told the boys that. The disappointment that we have is that it?s gotten to this point.
?I think this whole thing could?ve just been resolved if everyone would?ve just sat down and if we would?ve just shared information with each other.?
Sparacio said the only regret he has is raising his voice with Steve Casselberry during a conversation the two had. As far as Clements playing for the Cougars again, Sparacio said he?d only like to see his former quarterback make better decisions.
Barron athletic director Joe Kemper said there could be a resolution to everything that has transpired. He also said it would be good to see Clements back on the field under the right circumstances.
