Brown is primarly getting recruited as a safety at the next level. Brown has 740 rushing yards and ten touchdowns through 5 games. Toledo, Ohio State, Bowling Green, Akron, Illinois, West Virginia, and Ohio have been calling. He would like to visit West Virginia, Toledo, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and Illinois.

No. 20 Benedictine 28, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 13

The Bengals held on after gaining a 17-0 lead in the nonleague game at Bedford that pitted a pair of defending state champions.

Benedictine was last year's Division III champs while Cardinal Mooney won the Division IV crown. In handing the Cardinals their first loss this season, the Bengals evened their record to 3-3.

Cardinal Mooney (6-1) struggled stopping the run.

Senior Chris Austin rushed 31 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Jahmal Brown gained 62 yards on six carries with one TD. Benedictine amassed 239 yards rushing and threw the ball just once.

Walsh Jesuit vs. Benedictine

What, when, where: Nonleague game, 8 p.m., Bearcat Stadium, 481 Northfield Road, Bedford. Call 216-421-2080.

Records: Walsh Jesuit 3-4; Benedictine 3-3.

What to watch: Two teams with rich traditions but struggling this season. Walsh's suspect run defense was exposed last week in a drubbing by Lake Catholic. That could pose a problem against the run- oriented Bengals, who are fresh off a win over defending Division IV state champ Cardinal Mooney. But the defending Division III state champs seldom pass and are hard- pressed to defend against the pass.

Walsh Jesuit 14,
Benedictine 13

Senior quarterback Eric Hinkel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and ran 1 yard for a touchdown in the second quarter to help Walsh Jesuit build a 14-0 lead. The visiting Warriors (4-4) used a strong running attack led by senior Trey Bennett, who rushed for 116 yards, and junior Mark Wooldridge, who added 67 yards on the ground, to secure the win after Benedictine had pulled within a point midway through the third quarter.

I think if we were to decide to take a second back this year it would be between Jamhal and Norman Whitley. With all the talent next year though, and with Pittman a Jr, Wells & Haw So., Beanie a Fr., I'm not sure that we will need that extra this year. I think it will be hard enough to recruit any RB's next year with those guys we already have. You know coaches will tell the RB's we want that we are loaded at RB, imagine if we were to take another this year. Jamhal is a great talent and, grades permitting, should be playing his way into a D1 scholarship IMO. I would maybe consider him for a grayshirt though. He could get his grades up and then come in winter of 07. I'd only do that if we like him more than anyone next year though.

I think you are on the right track. The talent pool at RB is too deep next year to worry about a second back in this class when we have some glaring needs at other spots (OL and LB). I don't think Whitley gets an offer and despite the fact I really would love to see us take a flyer on Brown in this class, he is going to get soem decent offers eventually and I doubt he waits around forever to see if OSU offers and eventually verbals elsewhere. As you guys know there are some other good backs we are in on (Josh Adams and Carlos Brown come to mind, both longshots) but it is going to be difficult to get any other RB in this class to come in knowing that we have Wells and Wells...

THE DIFFERENCE MAKER: Benedictine's Jahmal BrownBrown
Senior tailback lets the numbers tell his story
Thursday, November 03, 2005
Eddie Dwyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
Jahmal Brown enjoys the anonymity.

The 5-10, 190-pound All-Ohio senior tailback/safety from Benedictine said he carries with pride the label many reporters and opposing coaches have put on him - the state's most underrated or unsung player.

"That's how I like it," Brown said. "I don't talk. I let my actions speak for me."

And Brown's actions the past two seasons have spoken loud and clear.

Brown, who has helped the two-time defending Division III state champions to their fifth consecutive Ohio High School Ath letic Association playoff appearance and 16th overall, has placed his name among the best at the "Home of Champi ons."

Entering Friday night's Division III, Re gion 9 quarterfinal against Lake Catholic, Brown stands third on the Bengals' all-time scoring list with 240 points. This fall, he has 18 touchdowns and 108 points, has rushed for 1,189 yards and is averaging 6.91 yards per carry.

"I feel I am one of the most complete players in the state," Brown said. "But all that matters to me is what college coaches think when they see me on film."

Any college coach who saw film of last weekend's game between St. Edward and Benedictine had to be impressed.

In a 41-38, triple-overtime setback to the Division I Eagles, Brown scored five touchdowns, including four in the second half and overtimes.

He helped the Bengals rally from a 14-point halftime deficit and moved past former All-Ohio running back and ex-Notre Dame star George Sefcik on Benedictine's scoring list. His five TDs are one short of the school's all-time, single-game record set by the late Larry Zelina and Raymond Williams.

"Although we lost the game, our confidence level is as high as it has been all season," Brown said. "The game itself was something I will remember forever."

And the kid whose favorite movie is "Remember the Titans," won't soon be forgotten by the defenses who have tried to defend against his skills.

I know there are some other RBs out there, but put me down as someone that is hoping Jahmal gets an offer. I think he is a special talent and could end up as a great role player in the backfield or on special teams at OSU. I certainly think if we are going to give out one schollie to a borderline player, Jahmal is hopefully at least considered.
