'06 OH QB Mike McGee (Adrian College)

By the time he finishes playing football, Mike McGee could go down as one of the all-time great quarterbacks at Adrian College in southern Michigan.

Then McGee will begin a job search by sending his resume to college coaches. He wants to become an assistant coach.

What the resume won't reveal is how McGee, a Brookhaven graduate, was the epitome of the clich that there is no "I" in the word "team."

McGee began his college career with the scout team in 2006 at Ohio University. He thought about biding his time until he got a chance, but saw no future when Brandon Jones was being redshirted and Theo Scott was being recruited out of junior college.

"I have no complaints because I had a great experience there," McGee said. "I was on the traveling squad for the GMAC Bowl. But I saw no future as a player. I thought about just being a student there, but I talked with my dad and he said you only get a chance to play college football once."

McGee transferred to Adrian, a Division III team, and immediately became a key player in the passing phase of a no-huddle spread offense.

The catch was McGee had to share the position for two years with Troy Niblock, whose forte was running the ball.

That was not an issue for McGee.

"Troy was the two-time league MVP," he said. "We respected one another and we got along great. He did a great job and I thought I did a great job, too. Troy helped me become a better quarterback and that's paying off now."

This season, McGee has the job to himself. He ranks 11th nationally in passing efficiency. He has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and 1,582 yards.
