Springboro (5-0) vs. Miamisburg (1-4)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Harmon Field, Miamisburg

2004 result: Springboro, 31-12

Outlook: Desperate Housewives? Try Desperate Vikings. Hard-luck Burg has lost four games in the waning minutes and is the best 1-4 team in the area. The Vikings lost 21-19 to playoff-caliber Edgewood and to Carroll on a last-second FG. Boro can't overlook them at the friendly confines of tradition-steeped Harmon Field. Gone is the I-back at Burg. Say hello to the spread offense with plenty of variations. QB Jason Williams triggers it all. Cody Blevins, one of only 11 seniors, is a difference-maker on both sides of the ball. LB Brandon Sams, Tony Bachman and Aaron Kemp are "D" stalwarts. Boro poses a daunting challenge. The Panthers are riding high in the computer ratings and polls. They have ridden a veteran defense and a dynamic offense (36 points a game) that looks unstoppable. It is orchestrated by QB Clay Coomer and complemented by a three-headed RB attack and a tall WR corps. Stout "D" is anchored by LBs Josh Ballard and Luke Diemunsch, tackle David Ghysels and man-mountain Jake Ballard.

Boro won 28-21, and was down 14-7 at half. They scored again nearing the end of the 3rd qtr and twice in the 4th to clinch it. Ballard didn't play in part of the 1st half and all of the 2nd with a pulled hamstring and is said to be out 3 weeks & QB Clay Coomer was out the entire 4th with a broken thumb. Cody put on a show at WR during the game with about 6,7, or 8 catches for probably about 100 yards and 2 TD's. He also made the best one handed falling down catches i've ever seen in my life. At the end of the game on 4th and 15 with us down by 7, our QB rolls left and rifles one to Cody in the corner of the endzone with 2 defenders on him, Cody made the catch barely in bounds and then had it hit out of his hands falling out of bounds and the ref called the pass incomplete, when Cody actually had possession and was in bounds. One of the Boro defenders later told his coach that Boro got lucky cause it was a clean catch and should've been ruled a TD. On the opposite side of the ball Cody had a good game as well, no picks, just all tackles.

Kent State withdrew their offer from Cody, because they said a coach that offered him didn't have the power to do so and another kid committed at safety or somethin and they only had 6 or 9 offers, i forget the exact amount, and that was the last one they could give out. But I can imagine he'll be getting more soon once his tapes get released, because since the beginning of the season, 23 different schools have requested tapes and his tapes will be very good judging by what i've seen right before my eyes

Northmont (5-1) vs. Miamisburg (1-5)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Northmont Stadium

2004 result: Did not play

Outlook: Northmont coach Lance Schneider's grandfather, Hank, and father, Mike, coached at Miamisburg. That doesn't mean his team will give the Vikings any special treatment. The Thunderbolts will pass, pass, pass with Clay Belton and mix in some running from A.J. Combest. Justin Watkins and a host of other receivers have shared the football. Defensively and on special teams, Kurt Coleman has helped Northmont put up some impressive numbers (averages of 33 points, 20 first downs, 355 yards for 211 yards against). The Vikings have played most everybody tough, but only have one win to show for it. Last week, Miamisburg had unbeaten Springboro on the ropes before the Panthers prevailed. QB Jason Williams and WR/DB Cody Blevins will try to keep up with the Thunderbolts.

Miamisburg (1-6) vs. West Carrollton (4-3)

When:
7:30 p.m. today

Where: WC All-Sports Stadium

2004 result: Miamisburg, 28-0

Outlook: Historic neighborhood rivalry pits resurgent Pirates and struggling Burg in a MML crossover. It's always a fierce game. WC's Matt Evans (1,431 yards, 9.8 yards per carry and 13 TDs) is the fulcrum of the attack. Burg's tough task is to contain him. Clutch kicker Jared Gibbons puts WC's kicking game on solid footing, thanks to game-deciding kicks over Edgewood and Talawanda. This game has playoff implications for the Bob Brigati-led Pirates. Burg has played a much tougher schedule and that might pay dividends tonight. The Vikings' maturation may surface with an overdue breakout game. The tough-luck Vikings have squandered too many leads and have played inconsistently or to the level of their opposition, all signs of a youthful squad. Watch out in 2006, though. Senior WR-DB Cody Blevins is a difference-maker on both sides and provides stability. He has 24 catches for 397 yards and a 16.5 average. Jason Williams is the most productive QB in the league.

Burg overcomes WC in second half

By Sean McClelland
Dayton Daily News
WEST CARROLLTON | A group of parents thought it would be a good idea to construct a huge pirate ship at one end of All-Sports Stadium.

The ship's cannon sounds every time the West Carrollton Pirates put points on the board.
In the second half Friday night, the cannon was conspicuously quiet as visiting Miamisburg roared back from a two-touchdown deficit to win a Mid-Miami League crossover thriller, 27-24.
What rang in the Miamisburg players' ears in the second half was a blistering halftime speech from their coaches.
"We just came out ready to play," said Miamisburg junior quarterback Jason Williams, whose 66-yard pass to Derion Hall pulled the Vikings within 21-19 late in the third. "We come back a lot."
Usually the comebacks have fallen short, explaining the Burg's 1-6 record entering play. WC fell to 4-4, the loss severely injuring playoff hopes.
"Our kids deserve this. Our coaches deserve this. All of our loyal fans deserve this," winning coach Tim Lewis said. "Now we don't have to hear we're the best 1-7 team in the area."
Keys to the victory? How about holding explosive WC running back Matt Evans to 105 yards on 21 carries (about 100 yards under his average) and shutting him down completely in the second half.
How about Williams guiding the Vikings on a 62-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that led to Gabe Debrill's second TD and a 25-24 lead.
Williams' two-point conversion pass to Cody Blevins made sure WC's fine placekicker, Jared Gibbons, could only tie the game. But Gibbons never got a look as Sean Fobbs' interception curtailed WC's final push.
Evans, who had been averaging 9.8 yards per carry, had 99 yards on 14 carries and two TDs at halftime as WC constructed a 21-7 lead.
"This is the first time this year we actually got every bit out of (the players) that we could get," Lewis said.
It helped that a third Evans TD never made it to the scoreboard. He ran 80 yards untouched early in the third quarter only to have the score wiped out by a holding penalty.
The cannon sounded once in the second half, following a 30-yard Gibbons field goal making it 24-19 with eight minutes remaining.
Evans bolted 38 yards with an option pitch to score midway through the second quarter. With seconds remaining in the half, WC used a 2-yard TD pass from Scott Jackson to Evans to take a two-touchdown lead that was short-lived indeed.
