'06 IL LB/S Dustin Jefferson (Illinois Verbal)

Seems like Illinois is looking good with a number of top recruits around the Chicago area--is this due to having a better recruiter in Ron Zook?
I would say yes...Zook was a good recruiter at UF. Many of the coaches trying to resurrect traditional programs this year (Zook, Weis, Callahan, Shula) are offering massive numbers...in part because the kids are solid prospects, but also just to re-establish/build relationships with various areas and coaches.

But anyway...back to Dustin.

You know, Kevin, that's a really good point. When Zook was at the University of Florida, he was known for being being a very fine recruiter within the state of Florida. And now, at the University of Illinois, which is just two hours south of Chicago, he is beginning to make inroads into that city of approximately 8 million people, which, by the way, is the largest city in the state of Illinois. I think that I'm beginning to see a pattern here... Maybe, if he were at the Ohio State University, he'd also be able to recruit the state of Ohio... In sum, I bet that you will see many kids from Chicagoland end up as members of the Fighting Illini under Ron Zook's watch.

From Rivals.com...Ball State became the third school to offer Dustin. He has camped at Indiana and Iowa and plans to camp at Illinois, Purdue and Ohio State. Iowa and Illinois are his early favorites.

"We got home from camp today and Dustin just felt that he was ready to commit to Illinois," said Ira Jefferson, the father of Dustin Jefferson.

Ira Jefferson is also the head coach at Kankakee (Ill.) High School and he's seen his son grow the past few seasons into one of the top football prospects in the Land of Lincoln.

"After we got home today from Illinois, Dustin and I sat down and talked about recruiting a little bit. I think he got tired of all these other schools telling him he's close to getting an offer but not coming through.

"Dustin told me tonight he wanted to go to Illinois, so we went ahead and made the commitment."

Dustin Jefferson is the #71 prospect, in the Midwest, according to Scout.com, he'll be a 3-star prospect when rankings are released at the end of June.

As a junior, Jefferson had 113 tackles and 5 sacks. He was named all-state. Dustin will be a four-year varsity starter in 2005.
