'06 CA OLB/S Allen Bradford (Southern Cal verbal)

San Bernardino Sun

7/20

Wanted Man

All eyes are on Colton's Bradford

By Paul Oberjuerge, Staff Writer

COLTON - The weight room at Colton High School brings to mind the words "Black Hole of Calcutta."
It's jammed under the stands on the home side of the football stadium, perhaps to take advantage of the lack of light and ventilation.

The room smells like rotting sweat socks. The bang of clanging iron assaults the ears. In July, it's ninth-circle-of-hell hot.

And it is where Allen Bradford likes to spend his afternoons. Getting ready for the 2005 football season ... planning to live up to preseason expectations higher than for any San Bernardino County footballer since NFL Hall of Famer Ron Lott nearly three decades ago.

Bradford is the top-ranked college prospect in the state, according to CalHiSports.com.

He is the fifth-best prospect in the nation, according to Scout.com ... which places him just ahead of the No. 7-in-the-country ranking Bradford has received from Rivals.com.

Both online talent services proclaim him to be the nation's top outside linebacker.

But the startling acclaim hasn't yet turned the head of the physical and speedy senior-to-be.

"If anything, he's stepped it up a little in the weight room," Colton quarterback Brad Sorensen said. "It's like he wants to prove he deserves the recognition he's getting."

Recruiting is an inexact business. It certainly isn't a science - though recruiters attempt to make it one.

Prep gods can turn into college mediocrities. The gawky kid could be the next great college quarterback. The doughboy could morph into Anthony Munoz.

But every measurement available to recruiters and scouts seems to indicate Bradford is a cut above.

That 4.54-second electronic time in the scouting combine 40-yard dash. The 4.28-second time in the shuttle run. The 30-inch vertical jump, the 505-pound squat lift and the 315-pound bench press. The chiseled 6-foot, 222-pound frame.

And the mayhem he brings to taking down a ballcarrier.

"I'm afraid sometimes he's going to hurt people," Colton coach Harold Strauss said. "He's just so fast and so strong.

"At one of the combines he got one of the top running backs in the state and just picked him up and stuck him in the ground."

The people who believe they can extrapolate college talent from prep stardom seem united in this opinion: Allen Bradford is something special.

Bradford is a postman's worst nightmare: a college prospect nearly every school in the country is recruiting.

"My mom or dad always get the mail," he said before a recent practice. "But almost all of it is for me."

Pamphlets. Tracts. Updates. Personal notes from coaches.

It's only going to get worse - because Bradford isn't very far along in his decision.

He's got as many as 15 schools on his active list, including USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, LSU, Mississippi, Washington, Oregon, Cal and Georgia.

He has yet to settle on the five schools he wants to visit this winter. That sort of open mind/indecision only heightens the competition for his favor, because so many schools believe they have a shot.

New Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis already has been to Colton to meet him. Bradford also has chatted with USC's Pete Carroll, UCLA's Karl Dorrell, Washington's Ty Willingham and more assistants than he can number.

"Sometimes a school will call you, and they'll just hand the phone around the coaching staff," Bradford said. "All the assistants. They'll say, `Keep up the good work, and we hope you become a Tiger,' or whatever."

The recruiting process already is something of a bore.

"Everybody pretty much says the same thing," Bradford conceded.

But it will intensify even more, in September, when the current verbal blackout period ends.

Bradford knows his phone will begin ringing on Sept. 1. And won't stop until he has signed a national letter of intent binding him to a college.

"I plan to answer the phone," he said. "See what they have to say.

"I figure this is only going to happen once in my life. I might as well appreciate it."

The Yellowjackets' equipment manager won't need to find Bradford a bigger helmet to accommodate a swollen head.

"He's the same guy he was a year ago," Sorensen said. "The guy we all look up to."

Bradford plans to keep his ego in check. He figures he hasn't accomplished much of anything yet.

"I've got my senior year here, and that comes first," he said. "I want to win a championship."

And he's talking CIF Division I, not just Citrus Belt League.

"Then I've got college and the NFL, I hope. I've got a lot ahead of me."

Bradford is young and not particularly worldly. He doesn't turn 17 until August. He loves video games and talking on the phone.

His universe pretty much centers on Colton High School and his home in south San Bernardino, where he lives with his father, stepmom (his birth mother died when he was 7) and three younger siblings.

He never has left the state.

Like, never across the border? "Not even to Vegas," he said. "Never."

He has only the haziest of ideas what Georgia or LSU might look like. South Bend winters, Baton Rouge summers ... only a rumor to him.

He plans to make unofficial visits to Washington and Oregon next month with his father, Keith.

They also considered a trip to the South, to see LSU, Mississippi, Georgia. But with summer school, the start of fall practice, and family finances being limited ... that doesn't appear likely now.

No recruit is flawless. Not even the No. 1 recruit in the state of California.

Bradford is an average student who is taking English III again this summer in hopes of getting a higher grade - part of his drive to push up his core grade-point average so he can qualify academically with a lower score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

In his plans, he figures an 860 SAT score will do. He got a 700 in his first try, but he can re-take the test monthly beginning in September.

Then there is his height. Some suggest he's more like 5-11, which is short for a major college outside linebacker - the position Bradford wants to play.

Notre Dame's Weis has suggested Bradford could move to inside linebacker, where 5-11, 6-0 is not uncommon. USC's Carroll hinted Bradford could be a running back, which didn't thrill the wanna-play-defense Bradford.

Bradford hopes to keep his options open with the help of Mother Nature.

"I'm still growing," he said. "My dad is 6-foot. I think I can make 6-1, 6-1“."

When he decides on a college, Bradford said the decision will be his. With maybe "5 percent" input from his father and uncle, Greg (who likes UCLA for Allen).

"It has to be my decision, because I'm the one who has to go live there and play there," he said.

He will be examining depth charts; he wants to play early in his career, perhaps as a freshman.

"Everybody tells you you can play right away," he said, "but then you look at their depth chart and see a bunch of linebackers who are freshmen or sophomores. That will be something I look at."

For now, the county's hottest prep commodity is keeping an open mind, or at least not tipping his hand, which figures to auger a feeding frenzy of recruiting in and around Colton High School. Perhaps right up to national signing day, in early February.

"He's got the whole package," Strauss said. And don't the college guys know it.

Top recruit in the state? "It's cool," Bradford said. "That's an accomplishment. They ranked me. But I still have to play the games."

ESPN CHAT (FREE)

Chat with Craig Haubert

Welcome to The Show! On Thursday, Craig Haubert, Recruiting Coordinator for Scouts Inc. will stop by to take your questions.
Haubert will be joined by OLB Allen Bradford from Colton, California. Allen appears on Craig's list of the top OLBs in the Class of 2006.

Send your questions now and join The Show on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.

Craig Haubert: (3:59 PM ET ) Hello and welcome to this week's chat. This week we welcome one of the best linebacker prospects in the country -- Colton, California's Allen Bradford.

Allen Bradford: (4:00 PM ET ) Thanks, I'm looking forward to answering all of your questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew Logan: nicholasville, Ky: Around what year in high school, would u say you first started to gain the attention of D-1 programs?

Allen Bradford: (4:01 PM ET ) By my sophomore year. It was after my sophomore year, after I had a real good season. I had 1,314 yds, 18 TDs and on defense I had 81 tackles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andres, Porterville, CA: Hey Allen Thanks for taking my question. With SC loading up in the LB position this last year, will that be a deterant on a decision of possibly going to SC? You know Carroll loves to compete and will put forth the best team he can, plus he is BIG on family and he knows how to take care of his players. Best of luck in your future endeavors! Fight ON!

Allen Bradford: (4:02 PM ET ) It will be. I want to play really early in career. It may be a factor because they have a stack of LBs there and that may decrease my playing opportunity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike: (Detroit, MI): Allen, do you think Tyrone Willingham has what it takes to turn the Washington program around?

Allen Bradford: (4:03 PM ET ) I think he does. He's the coach to turn that program around into a winning program.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Russel (Lincoln, NE): Allen how interested are you in playing LB at Notre Dame?

Allen Bradford: (4:04 PM ET ) Right now, leaving California is not a factor. I can see myself playing for Notre Dame. I know I may get a little homesick. I'm not gonna be living with my mom and dad forever, so I just gotta see what happens and take my chances.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linda (Ft. Collins, CO): A-bomb, you are the bee's knees. You plan on playing on both sides of the ball in college? or sticking to D?

Allen Bradford: (4:05 PM ET ) I plan on staying on defense. I'd rather get hits than take hits.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jonathan (Long Island, NY): Mr. Bomb, how important is a winning program for whatever college you go with ultimately? are you afraid to go to a not-so-national program and create the winning tradition?

Allen Bradford: (4:06 PM ET ) Take Washington for example, they went 1-10. I think players get more remembered when they turn a losing program into a winning program. fans say that a certain player is the player that turned that program around. I just want the opportunity to play and I feel I can change a program around.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aaron (Beaverton, OR): Allen, you are huge and a monster in a weight room. How important are facilities, as well as the strength and conditioning coach you prospectively may sign with?

Allen Bradford: (4:07 PM ET ) It's real important -- I weigh 224 the last time I weighed myself. I love the weight room, I feel like I can't be touched in the weight room. A facility with a good conditioning coach will only help me get stronger, so I'm definitely looking for that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brien(NC): Nebraska is a little thin at LB- could you see yourself playing for the Scarlet and Cream?

Allen Bradford: (4:08 PM ET ) Yeah I can. I set up for an official visit on September 2nd. I want to see if I can put myself in a position to play in front of that many people. So I can see myself going to Nebraska.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brett (Missoula, MT): Hey A-Bomb, what the deal is baby? Are you and teammate Shareece Wright (CB) a package deal or what?

Allen Bradford: (4:09 PM ET ) I wouldn't say we're a package deal. We love to play together, but we know that whatever place is better for one of us, that's where we're going to go to. If we find a school that's good for both us, we'll go there. But we're going to go to the school that's good for each of us. But I love to play with him, I've played with him since 7th grade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cy (Kent, WA): How does it feel to be one of the most recruited athletes in the nation? do you wake up and pinch yourself every morning?

Allen Bradford: (4:10 PM ET ) It feels good. It only happens one time in your life. I'm just living with it. I'm not letting it get to my head. It's just making me work harder, it's just something that motivates me now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justin (Birmingham): Allen, are you interested in playing for Tennessee at all?

Allen Bradford: (4:11 PM ET ) I would play there, but I don't really know much about their program. I want to narrow down my list of schools from 15 to about 5 before the season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Robert (Seattle): Would you think about commiting early, or are you set on taking all five visits?

Allen Bradford: (4:13 PM ET ) I'm set on taking all five of my visits. I want to see all the teams I want to play for, how good they do. I want to see if I have to build the program up. I'm going to take all of my visits and then commit in December or January.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scott (Richmond, VA): Allen, who are your favorite coaches recruiting you at the moment?

Allen Bradford: (4:14 PM ET ) Right now my favorite coaches are Coach Eric Bienemy from UCLA, Coach Weis from Notre Dame, Coach Norton from USC and Coach Willingham from Washington, Coach Nelson from Ole Miss. Those are the coaches that are really saying personal things, that write you, they text a lot. I like to see that they want to get in touch with me.

Allen Bradford: (4:15 PM ET ) I just want to say thanks for your time, and thanks for your questions. I will be a player, you really want to see at the college level, probably in the pros. thanks to ESPN for having me on, I'm about to get the season started, and the countdown is on, and the Bomb will be dropped!

Craig Haubert: (4:17 PM ET ) Thanks to Allen, he gave a lot of great answers. I'll now take your questions

he stated that the atmosphere at Nebraska would be good because of the lack of a pro team in the area, meaning that Nebraska football was the ticket. wait until he sees tOSU, especially if he happened to be here 9/10...

From the Ole Miss site...Ole Miss was Allen's first offer and is going there to visit the weekend they play LSU. He has also scheduled officials to ND for the USC game and to Nebraska. He is looking for the school where he can make the biggest impact.

The Scout.com class of 2006 state rankings are here, and today's list includes appearances from California, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

</TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The state of California continues to dominate the rankings, with eight players among the top fifty prospects in the nation and over forty players earning a four star status.

"When it comes to recruiting out west, California is where it all begins and ends. Los Angeles is always stacked to the limit with talent and this year is no exception," says West recruiting analyst Chris Fetters. "With players like Stafon Johnson, C.J. Gable, Allen Bradford, Darian Hagan, Jr., Konrad Reuland, Jonas Mouton, Devin Ross, Terrence Austin, Jamere Holland, Shareece Wright and Chane Moline all coming from that hotbed of prep potential, it's no wonder coaches from all over the country fit in a trip to Southern California at some point during their May recruiting period schedule."

Balls will fly through the air a little more in Virginia with wide receivers dominating the rankings. The top three players in Virginia are five star wide receivers, thanks in part to a new transfer into the state this fall.

Vidal Hazelton</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>"Vidal Hazelton moving to Hargrave from New York really shook everything up in Virginia. The number two player in the region just adds to a group of tremendous receivers including Percy Harvin, Chris Bell, and Damon McDaniel," says east recruiting analyst Miller Safrit. "At the top, Virginia is as talented as it has been since the class of 2002 and linebacker Jarrell Miller could be as good as any of the linebackers from that class."

Talented is a word for Mississippi with many solid prospects, and according to South recruiting editor Scott Kennedy, it is very deep.

"Alabama's state ranking was released yesterday to show one of the deepest classes of talent in years, and the state of Mississippi is another deep south state that is making a rebound with a terrific crop of preps. The head of the class is <TABLE align=right><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE width=150 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle>

Cordera Eason</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Meridian running back Cordera Eason. We loved Eason when he was running in the high 4.6's, but after back to back 4.4's in camps this summer after dropping 10 pounds, Eason may be the top running back in the south. Eason leads a solid group of running backs from Mississippi that include teammate Derrick Davis, Terry's Anthony Dixon, Lumberton's Terry Grant, and Biggersville's Alex Carpenter."

Oklahoma is led by one of the top players in the nation, Gerald McCoy, a tremendous defensive tackle from Southeast High School.

"He is holding down number one on the Midlands Hot 50. This kid flat out terrorizes the opposition. It takes more than two blockers to keep him at bay," says Midlands analyst Stacey Dean who adds that his "ability to dominate, throwing centers and guards around like rag dolls, coupled with his size, power and quickness makes him the hands down best prospect in the state."

Jake Bscherer</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The Badger State always has its fair share of offensive line talent and Midwest recruiting analyst Chris Pool believes this year in Wisconsin is no different.

"Sturgeon Bay’s Jake Bscherer (6-7/280) is a four-star prospect that has given Wisconsin his verbal commitment. Gabe Carimi, a 6-foot-7, 265-pounder, from Menona (Grove) is also committed to the Badgers. The state of Wisconsin is also home to Eric Spiekerman, perhaps the biggest offensive tackle in the country at 6-foot-9 and 390-pounds. One prospect to keep an eye on is Milwaukee (King) wide receiver Lance Kendricks. Kendricks is a super athlete that’s cut from the same mold as Larry Fitzgerald Jr."
