a few articles/quotes on his dual state track win yesterday

Davis- ABJ

Alliance's Kendall Davis was surprised, even shocked, after he won the Division II 100-meter dash.

About an hour later, as Davis demolished the field in the 200-meter dash, he realized that he truly belonged in the front of the pack.

``He just found out today how good of an athlete he is,'' Alliance coach Terry Hammerton said.

``I think he knew he was pretty good, but I think he found out he's up there with the upper-echelon athletes.''

``I was confident, but I don't expect it to be like this -- twice,'' Davis said. ``I expected to place, but not win.''

Davis was just glad to be in the running.

His coach wasn't surprised, especially after his times in the preliminaries were personal bests.

Davis- Canton Rep

The performance by Davis should not surprise too many.

He consistently ran top times this season, losing just three races. He also is among the state’s top football recruits as a tailback and defensive back.

Growing up, his brother Thomas Davis, older by three years, probably was the last person to beat Kendall consistently.

“This was a lot different,” he said of running at state in front of packed college stadium.

Davis said he was a little bit nervous for the 100. It didn’t show. He won in 10.87 seconds.

He came back more relaxed and confident for the 200.

“When I won the 100, I knew I was better at the 200, and I thought, ‘I’ll win that, too,’ ” Davis said.

Davis won the 200 in a career-best 21.76. The look of disbelief was now gone as he walked around with more of the swagger of a champion.

Well Davis is awfully humble. I think I like this kid. I know Duane speaks highly of him. With Harrison talking about not camping here this summer I wonder if our interest in Davis possibly picks up? We may need to keep an eye on him.

I guess that Brandon hasn't learned from Chauncey Incarnato's experience. Demanding attention and pouting about lack of "love" and "respect" is not a very good way to endear oneself with Tressel & Co. Go to camp, prove your case, earn your offer, and then do want you want with it.

Bringing this thread back to Davis....

It is obvious that Kendall is one heck of an athlete. Duane Long feels that he is one of the best high school DB's in Ohio, and one of this state's top overall prospects. However, Duane also states that Kendall needs to work on his grades a bit.

That's too bad about Harrison, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. With our depth at DB, and who else we're in on this year, losing out on a 5-8.5 corner is not a big deal. I have a feeling he's still looking to go somewhere with Ringer anyways, and I don't think OSU will offer Javon at this time. I'd expect somebody to Iowa or ND to get both players if we don't offer.

Sorry to jack this thread off topic. That's all I'll say about Harrison.

He says he would love to be a Buckeye but like the Hight case, Davis needs to improve his grades. He says it won't be a problem but guru's like Duane disagree.

Duane has kinda backed off his statement about Davis. Although he clearly has some work to do it wouldn't be shocking if he qualified and he's doing the things he needs to do. Sounds promising.

Scouting Report: Alliance High School
By Bill Greene Ohio High Scout/Contributor
Date: Jun 15, 2004

The football team at Alliance High School in Alliance, Ohio has seen some struggles in recent years, but they have recently got back on track and are showing much improvement. Ohio High scout and contributor Bill Greene shares his thoughts on Alliance's top players.

The Alliance football program is a program on the rise. I spent an afternoon with coach Ron Kuceyeski and the team last week, during one of their camp days. Coach Kuceyeski has the Aviators talking playoffs as the 2004 season approaches. This optimism is based on 16 returning starters, including 3 of the top rated players in Ohio. Kendell Davis, ranked No. 10 in the latest Ohio High magazine, Charles Baab and Chris Banks are all future Division I college players.

Davis has indicated a preference to continue his career in the Big 10, and his top five schools are Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State and Purdue, in no particular order. Davis is working hard to improve his standing academically, and Coach Kuceyeski is quite confident Davis will be qualified. Davis recently competed in the state track meet, winning both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, quite an impressive feat. In a camp held recently in Massillon, Kendell was clocked at an eye-popping 4.32 in the forty yard dash. Kendell is 6' 0" 190 pounds, and bench presses 275 pounds. Davis appeared with the Aviators in Columbus this past Saturday to compete in a 7-on-7. Davis only competed in two of the five contests, due to taking the ACT test in the morning, but still impressed with two long TD's. Davis will travel Wednesday with Coach Kuceyeski to meet with Walt Harris at Pitt. Later this summer, Davis will also attend a camp run by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. An appearance at OSU's camp is also possible.

Sophomore QB Charles Baab also was very impressive Saturday throwing the football. Baab completed 80 of 111 passes for 1,200 yards during the five scrimmages. Baab, who is one of the top rated QB's in the sophomore class, caused quite a stir last season after taking over the QB duties in week one. He had an outstanding season, leading the Aviators to their most successful campaign in years. Baab is 6' 0" 170 pounds, and runs a 4.7 forty. When asked to describe his coach, Baab said "He's such a good man, so humble."

Charles' goals this year are to see the Aviators make the playoffs and get better as a QB. Looking down the road, Baab is interested in Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Kansas, with OSU being his favorite. Baab finished his freshman year with a 3.7 grade point average.

Chris Banks is emerging as a top flight WR-FS entering his senior year. Banks is 6' 3" 175 pounds, and recently ran a 4.55 forty. Banks is currently being recruited by the MAC schools, but Coach Kuceyeski feels with a big senior campaign, Banks should be drawing attention from the bigger schools as well. Banks, who is qualified academically, has no favorite school, at this time.

A future star could be freshman Jeff White. White will start out playing at the freshman level, but could move up depending on his progress. White is 5' 10" 175 pounds and ran a blistering 11.2 hundred meters as an eighth grader.

Coach Kuceyeski has implemented a family atmosphere at this Division II public school, and it's no secret he's the driving force behind the current Aviator success. It's obvious the players have tremendous respect for their leader, and hopefully the momentum generated last fall will carry the Aviators into the playoffs in 2004

The Aviators could be a very good team this fall. They return running back Kendell Davis, quarterback Charles Babb and wide receiver Chris Banks, among other college prospects. Banks has orally committed to Indiana, Davis has more than three dozen scholarship offers, including one from Michigan, and Babb is just a sophomore, but he is on the radar screen of many colleges.

Davis has not committed to any school yet, but Michigan was impressed with him following its summer camp. Davis ran the second-fastest 40-yard time out of the 1,500 kids. He’s got scholarship offers from Pitt to Kansas State. The Wolverines are looking at him as a cornerback, but the Panthers are interested in him as a running back. Davis is one of five backs Wisconsin is recruiting, according to Kuceyeski.

OSU has not offered Davis, though.

“He’s not been officially offered by Ohio State because I think they’re waiting on his ACT score to get a little higher,” Kuceyeski said.

There is no guarantee Davis would accept an offer from the Buckeyes.

“Let’s put it this way: He’s not a die-hard Ohio State fan,” Kuceyeski said. “He has no allegiance there, but we’ll see.”

Davis probably will take most of his five official visits, then decide on a school.

I didn't realize scUM had already offered Davis- Rivals and Insiders are not reporting that

Speedy Davis hopes to take Aviators to new heights
Monday, August 23, 2004 By MIKE POPOVICH Repository sports writer

ALLIANCE -- The demeanor never changes. Alliance senior running back Kendell Davis is soft-spoken, yet always determined. He remains calm, cool and collected when the spotlight shines brightest. He will not rest on laurels even though he already is one of the most highly recruited high school football players in Ohio.

“Some kids are born to be leaders by example,” Aviators head coach Ron Kuceyeski said.

Kuceyeski, his coaches and players feel very fortunate to have a good one on their side.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Davis was a driving force in the resurgence of Alliance football last season. He averaged 8 yards per carry and finished with 960 yards as the Aviators won five games. That matched their combined total from the previous four seasons.

Davis has a bright future ahead of him. Some big-time Division I colleges have him on their radar screen. He could play cornerback in the Big Ten.

A commitment will not be made until after the season. Davis’ goal is to make his final year at Alliance the best for himself and his team.

“I’m just thinking about this year — winning and trying to go to the playoffs,” Davis said.

No one will be surprised if Davis and his teammates make it.

The Aviators have a formidable trio of skill players in Davis, sophomore quarterback Charles Babb and senior wide receiver Chris Banks. Their offensive line has improved. Their defense was one of the best in the Metro Athletic Conference in 2003. Everything seems to be coming together.

“The whole team is excited about this year,” Davis said.

Davis is one of the fastest athletes in the area. He won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the state track meet in June. His 40 time has been clocked at 4.32 seconds.

Kuceyeski remembers seeing a composed Davis before the 100.

“I walked up to him and said, ‘Hey, how are you going to do?’ ’’ Kuceyeski said. “He said, ‘I’ll be OK.’ He has the same even-keel personalty.”

The drive and dedication Davis shows also is clearly evident.

“He’s mentally and physically tough,” Kuceyeski said. “He’s always working to better himself not only on the field, but also in the classroom. He understands how important academics are when you’re trying to sign a big scholarship.”

Davis undoubtedly will receive more attention as his senior season progresses. He has individual goals, but rushing for a set amount of yards or touchdowns is not at the top of the list.

“I want to work hard and be a leader,” Davis said.

Kuceyeski hopes the rest of his players follow Davis’ example.
