'05 NJ LB Brian Cushing (USC Signee)

Rivals Premium

Cushing recently visited Maryland and now they are listed among his favorites. He has 3 visits scheduled and Ohio State is among a list of 4 schools vying to get one of his final 2 official visits this fall. Cushing said it was kind of pointless to name a leader at this point but it appears USC and Virginia are on top.

No tOSU in his final eight schools -(USC, Miami, Oklahoma, ND, Maryland, Virginia, PSU, Rutgers)

I can understand his listing Maryland, Virginia, PSU, and Rutgers as they are close by, and USC and Miami as they are "glamour locale" teams, but why Notre Dame and Oklahoma and not us? Notre Dame is mediocre at best right now, and Oklahoma's defense is no better than ours while we have the more recent national title (not to mention we didn't get waxed our last two games of the year like Oklahoma did).

The reason is two words: "Depth chart".

If he has to play as a true freshmen that might be true but our depth chart has to look good for any LB. After a redshirt year Hawk, Carp, D'Andrea and Schlegel will all be gone. Some of them may be gone sooner.

True, but we still have the likes of Kerr and Freeman. Also Stan White could be moved back to LB (only reason he was moved from LB was our obscene depth there). Curt Lukens is also being moved to LB if I'm not mistaken. Besides, an all-world recruit like McCoy probably doesn't look too kindly at sitting out a year.

Oh yeah, none of our junior LBs will leave early for the draft...big Vcash on that.

You're also leaving out Chad Hoobler, Curtis Terry and Brandon Smith. That said, guys like McCoy are well aware of our depth and have commented they can come in early and play after the 4 juniors leave. You'd be hard pressed to find a school as prestigious as Ohio State with a better situation at linebacker. Take Miami for example, most likely our biggest competition for McCoy. They just landed Willie Williams and James Bryant this year and Tavares Gooden last year, not to mention Spencer Adkins, Moffett and the other linebackers they are in on. There is going to be competition anywhere these kids pick to go. I doubt Cushing is worried about competition with schools like USC still on his list. If he is he better go to Rutgers.

BRIAN CUSHING

Brian Cushing is the embodiment of the 21st-century football recruit.

Cushing, a 6-4, 220-pound positional hybrid who is alternately the biggest safety and fastest linebacker and defensive end in New Jersey, has two off-field obsessions.

He's a workout warrior devoted to sculpting the perfect football physique, and he's an Internet junkie who can't tear himself away from the various recruiting websites that have become increasingly popular in recent years.

The 2003 First Team All-State selection became enraged in the off-season by chat room claims that his speed had been greatly exaggerated, and he couldn't ignore it. So even though he was already widely considered a top-50 national recruit and his coach advised him against it, Cushing decided to put his reputation on the line at the Elite College Combine at the Meadowlands in May.

"He is a little nuts," Bergen Catholic coach Fred Stengel said. "If you have a bad 40 time and everybody sees it, your stock goes down. But he's so competitive that he said, 'I'm going to show everybody what I can do.'

"I told him he had nothing to prove, plus his ankle was hurt, so he was taking a risk. But he didn't care, he was going to show everybody what he can do."

What Cushing did on a tender ankle was run a 4.51 -- the fastest time posted by any player at any of the three positions he will line up at this fall.

"I just wanted to let everyone know that I was confident in what I could do and wouldn't back down from any challenges," Cushing said. "Besides, there were a couple more offers I wanted. USC was my big one, and they offered after that, and so did Oklahoma and Miami."

He's still not completely satisfied, though.

"I want an offer from Texas," he said.
