Safety commits to the Bruins

UCLA added speed and aggressiveness to its secondary Wednesday when Chino High safety Shawn Oatis gave an oral commitment to play at the school next season.
The hard-hitting Oatis is one of the top prep safeties in the nation. He was on his official visit when UCLA beat Stanford 21-0 Saturday. Previously, Oatis took official visits to Notre Dame and Ohio State.
"When I looked at it as a whole, it was playing opportunities, the weather, not having to deal with homesickness," Oatis said. "It just (offset) the prestige of Notre Dame. It just felt like it was the right place for me to play ball. I have a close-knit family, and it's important for them to see me play."
Oatis, who is 6-feet, 215 pounds, plans on playing strong safety at UCLA. He said if he added 20 pounds, he could move to linebacker.
"The depth chart at UCLA was much more appealing to my eyes," Oatis said. "I love the aggressiveness of their safeties. They're big, they like to come up and hit and cover guys. They like to use their safeties aggressively, and I am an aggressive safety." -- Brian Dohn
