When I was a kid, we’d buy it from our neighbors a few houses down the street who had a small farm. We’d get a half gallon, more or less, in a metal cannister, which we’d bring back empty, for 40 cents.

Only one way. And it was tasty. We actually did live about 1/2 a mile uphill from my elementary school though. The first quarter mile was steep as shit, then it was more moderate, then right past our house was another steep hill. Also, when I went to get it or to return the cannister, I tied an onion to my belt, because that was the style at the time.

A few months ago my wife was looking at my middle school year book from when I lived in Oregon. She asked why so many of the kids looked like teachers. Our basketball team had 5 players 6'5" or above and they all looked like they should have been in college. I told her that back in those days we drank milk straight from the cow and bought our meat by the side from local ranchers. We had gardens, chicken, fruit grew wild alongside the road. That food put hair on your chest.
