Some stats and the challenge we face on Saturday...
A brief overview for those not familiar: the stats I put together look at the overall efficiency of a given team. The data is from the NCAA and includes games played against FCS teams.
So, with that, here's PSU vs. OSU after 10 weeks worth of...
Man oh man oh man I hope our offense can play up in these next two weeks. With our defense, these games could be silly. If everything comes together, we'll be treated to more long shots of Sad Penn State Girl.
The shit-talking is pretty tough to find down here, save for late-night drunken arguments in Clifton. Sadly, the only parties that bring up the comparison are certain UC players and the local media.
No doubt. The model can only tells us that PSU has been efficient against their competition (#7 in the country in PPP ratio and Victory Gap).
I'd say this method is actually a pretty spotty predictor of future outcomes as no component of schedule strength is incorporated. It can tell you...
A comparison: Wisconsin, before and after Ohio State
OR
YEAH WE BAD
Lets take a look at our the stats prior to playing Wisconsin:
Prior to playing us, Wisconsin came into the game with an undefeated record and respectable efficiency ratings - particularly their yards-per-point metrics...
I think that's one of the big reliefs of the season. We went into this year thinking Pryor was our only playmaker. Now we're in the middle of it and Pryor hasn't been expected to "take over" a game and win it. We have found other guys that can step up and make plays.
(You could make a case for...
Word association game: Wisconsin. What? Passing? The part where the QB hurls the ball to another player as a means of advancing it up the field?
They're ranked 19th in passing efficiency, having attempted 131 passes (completing 86 of them for 65.7% completion). All the more reason to get at...
So far this year, Fredo is statistically one of the worst, if not the worst team in FBS.
Total Offense - 100th
Total Defense - 92nd
Scoring Offense - 120th
Scoring Defense - 119th
Turnover Margin - 120th
"Stats? Not now chief, I'm in the zone."
Week 4 Stats
OR
My model kinda sucks without more data
So... from this we can see that Illinois is bad. They are, in 4 weeks' worth of competition, about as efficient as NMSU. Michigan has the most efficient offense on our schedule while PSU and Iowa appear to be our biggest tests so far...
Taking the stats a little further... As a measure of overall team efficiency, you can make a ratio of offensive points per play (OPPP) vs. defensive points per play allowed (DPPP).
Ohio State's OPPP/DPPP after 4 games is 2.474 - that's 0.445 OPPP to 0.205 DPPP allowed. This puts us at 12th...
If IU is willing to sell home games to conference opponents, moving this game to Lucas Oil Stadium is the least they could do.
We'd still fill the place up with Buckeyes.
It was the first time I sat in the student section since I graduated a few years ago. It was nice to see the students in the stands again, and their dedication was impressive throughout the rain.
The guy next to me (who has been an undergrad for "too long" - 5th year? 6th? couldn't get it out...
Seattle has one of the best micro-brew scenes in the nation. Definitely worth the trip.
EDIT: As does Portland - good call.
Anyway, back on track: how 'bout that wooden turtle?
