The evidence supporting evolution keeps on growing.....
The discovery of an incredibly well preserved transitional fossil was announced today linking prosimians with anthropoids. A nearly complete fossil like this is a once in a lifetime find and is priceless in the world of paleontology...
I disagree that I have no rational reason to believe that you are sitting in a brown chair. I've seen brown chairs before, I know they exist. I have no reason to doubt that you are sitting on a brown chair although the possibility certainly exists that you aren't.
However, if you told me that...
Unfortunately I've encountered very few others of faith like yourself who have such an open mind. The vast majority of "believers" are 100% certain that God exists and have told me that there is no evidence (even conceptually) that could be shown to them that would make them believe otherwise...
But isn't that just belief in a "God of the gaps"? In other words, God exists in matters that humans either don't have adequate knowledge of yet or will never be able to comprehend with our limited brains. We're not certain of exactly how the universe came to be, so God must have created it. Or...
But if there is no evidence that something exists, why is it rational to believe that it does exist anyway? Also, the "evidence" for and against God is not equal. And if you're going to open the door and believe that something exists without evidence, how do you know what to believe in and what...
I think we're going off on some hypothetical tangents here so let me go back to my original statement that belief in God is irrational. For those who disagree with me, take me through the rational and logical steps of how you came to believe in God. I've been in these discussions many times...
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "things that aren't science" since everything in the physical world is encompassed by science. And belief in anything outside the physical world for which there is no direct evidence, is irrational by definition.
But I agree with BKB above who stated that...
Substituting ignorance of how the universe came to be (or anything else for that matter) with God is irrational. And why is God the de facto best alternative to ignorance? I'm content saying that I don't know for sure how the universe was created, but I do have some hypotheses (and I'll even...
I'm sure that philosophers and non-believers have been using the term irrational when describing belief in God for hundreds or thousands of years so it certainly predates Dawkins. But believing that a supernatural being exists for which there absolutely no physical evidence and is based strictly...
I agree that Dawkins (and some other atheist authors) can come across as almost militant in some of their writings. But I think he's just very passionate about his beliefs and sometimes having a strong voice in the minority who stands up to the religious majority isn't always a bad thing.
I...

Seriously though, I think every person of faith should read a book about atheism (just like every atheist should be familiar with the world's major religions). It will do one of two things: make your faith even stronger or open up a...

Well you responded "actually thats not the current theory on dog evolution." and provided the website when I said "every current breed of dog has many transitional breeds that provide a link between now and when they were first domesticated from wolves.", so I took that to mean you didn't think...
While that's an interesting experiment and was probably seen as insightful 40 years ago, recent DNA analysis of most breeds of dogs indicate that they were all domesticated from the wolf.
Here's an interesting episode of Nature that aired on PBS in 2007 on the subject: Dogs That Changed the...
Sure, but every current breed of dog has many transitional breeds that provide a link between now and when they were first domesticated from wolves. ID and Creationism state that species suddenly appeared from nowhere and have no transitional forms. I don't see how anyone could argue that the...
Your example of domesticated dogs is only evolution, not creation. Creationism or ID states that things popped into existence. No breed of dog just appeared out of nowhere or was created from the rib or whatever of another dog.
I wouldn't want to take my chances with re-incarnation either. Not to sound arrogant, but I feel that I've already lived a more privileged and fulfilled life than 99.9% of the people who have ever been born on this planet and I wouldn't want to take my chances of being born in a Calcutta slum or...
Not me. Living forever with family and friends in "paradise" sounds like a living hell to me. I can't stand being with even my closest friends and family for more than a few hours at a time (and with my wife for longer than that - but we still need some time apart from each other now and then)...
Why is it such a big deal to miss a wedding? Most are boring as hell, serve shitty food and you're forced to spend a day with a crowd of people you would never voluntarily hang out with. Your cousin sounds young and self-absorbed - it would do her good if you didn't go so she could realize that...
There are several different ways to compare DNA from one species to another. A 99% similarity is correct if you include gene duplication and just try to match similar genes between the two genomes. But a more telling statistic is to compare which and how many proteins each gene can produce and...
