You mean climbing a mountain in December is dangerous?

amazing how much the media is wasting on this story. Well, one is dead. Hopefully they find the other 2 corpses soon and we can get this pointless story out of the news.

Funny how after 9/11 they said we wouldn't waste time with mindless melodrama.

How about this? you're stupid enough to climb a mountain in December, you deserve whatever God/nature/charles darwin has for you.

I could not agree more. The first I heard about this, a newscaster was reading the note they left behind. It read like a mountain climber's resume, intended, we are to assume, to reassure rescuers that the trio had ample climbing and survival experience.

First thought in my head: book deal. (Because the note as reported had nothing to say about their whereabouts, intended course of action or direction, or a rendevouz point.)

Second thought: don't waste one precious dime on them and for godsakes don't risk other lives on them for exactly the reason you give (and their letter failed to say): They are too stupid to stay off Mt. Hood in December.

it's news because there's nothing else going on right now... just like the PS3 and Nintendo Wii is news... the real story will happen if they are found alive (doubt it)

it's hard to feel sorry for people who put themselves in this position.

I agree. Obviously any loss of life is sad in my opinion, I guess some of the sting is taken away when the people put themselves in that situation, knowing of the potential consequences.

I view it in the same light as someone who dies from a skydiving accident......sad, but it goes with the territory.

On the bright side, at least when stupid people snuff themselves in such spectacular fashion, they do so alone.

If morons didn't kill themselves performing daring and stupid stunts, they'd only later kill themselves plus a bunch of innocent bystanders (e.g.: their own family) by approaching some ridiculously mundane task in a spectacularly stupid way, like deep frying a turkey on the kitchen stove.

Don't mourn somebody dying from being stupid. Give praise that you weren't in the general vicinity when they went.

Carlo Cipolla's Five Laws of Stupidity:

  • We always underestimate the number of stupid people.
  • The probability of a person being stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
  • A stupid person is someone who causes damage to another person, or a group of people, without any advantage accruing to himself (or herself) -- or even with some resultant self-damage.
  • Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid people. They constantly forget that at any moment, and in any circumstance, associating with stupid people invariably constitutes an expensive mistake.
  • A stupid person is the most dangerous person in existence.
