I give up. This board is too hard to understand.
Yankees decline 2006 option on Williams

CLEVELAND (AP) - The New York Yankees have decided not to pick up the $15 million club option for next season on Bernie Williams, their steady center fielder on four World Series title teams.

The club had until Aug. 1 to exercise their option on the 36-year-old, who signed with the Yankees in 1985.

"I've talked to Bernie and I think he's comfortable with it," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Emotionally, he is fine with it. It is just that the last day of July was the day it had to be done. It was in his contract."

Williams wasn't surprised by the move, and he didn't rule out the possibility of returning to the only club he has ever played for.

"It's something they felt they had to do," Williams said during batting practice for Tuesday night's game with the Cleveland Indians. "I'm still playing for this team and I'm going to do all I can to help this team win."

Williams didn't want to speculate about his future. The Yankees entered the series with Cleveland 2 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East and two games behind wild-card leading Oakland.

"It wouldn't be fair to talk about it at this point in the season," Williams said.

Torre said the club's decision came at an awkward point in the season, and he would like to keep Williams around.

"He still has plenty to give, other than being a day-in, day-out player," Torre said. "It would be unusual to face him in another uniform, but it is unusual for him not to be in the lineup everyday, hitting second or third, too. Things change."

A five-time All-Star, Williams holds the career postseason records for homers (22) and RBIs (79) and games (115). He entered the season with a .301 career average, but he's struggled in 2005.

Entering Tuesday's game, Williams was batting just .245 with seven homers and 39 RBIs in 88 games.

The Yankees have been searching for a long-term replacement for Williams for most of the season, and started infielder Tony Womack in center field for their opener against the Indians.

"Bernie will probably be in there the next two days," Torre said. "We're going to use a lot of combinations in center field. We look at numbers and try to put players in the situation that gives them the best chance to succeed."

Williams signed a seven-year, $89.5 million contract after the 1998 season. That year, he won his only AL batting title, hitting .339 with 26 homers and 97 RBIs.

Manny in center? Are you kidding around or being serious? He's a top 5 hitter in baseball right now but defensively he might not be ready to man centerfield for the Yankees or any other team for that matter.

Manny is way too sporadic of a fielder to be the Yankees center-fielder. He can make the occasional amazing play but has been known to flub them too. Granted he is a better fielder and a much better hitter than Bernie but I don't think he would be a good choice at all. He also has been known to be a headcase and I don't like that a bit. If he joined the Yankees ever he would have to learn to accept that the spotlight won't be solely on him.

Bernie has been a wonderful Yankee for the past 20 years and I have had the chance to follow him my whole life as a baseball fan. As much as I love the guy, he needs to go after this year. He is way too inconsistent with his bat and is as slow as they get when fielding a ball in center, along with having a weak arm. Good luck in the future Bernie

Also, why are we concerned with batting? The Yankees have a plethora of bats. I am more concerned with having a center fielder who can make the defensive plays needed to stop teams from scoring so many runs against them. Then there's the pitchers...here's where the real problems lie.

I won't even address the Manny in Center comment, but I for one will miss Bernie terribly. Long-time Yankee fans waited forever for Bernie to come up (he was touted as one of the organization's best prospects since signing with the team at 18 years old in '87), and waited even longer for Bernie to blossom into a great player (he came up in '91 but didn't hit his stride until the 2nd half of '95).

He's been a great Yankee & has given us many, many memories. I've been pulling for Bernie all season. He is my favorite Yankee this year. # 51.

What are you talking about? The only amazing thing manny does is play left field like he should be wearing a football helmet. Unless "sporadic" is Latin for "to suck greatly" youve been watching a different Manny play LF than I have.

Bernie Williams could be on his deathbed and still be a better OF than Manny, hell my 71 year old grandmother is probably a better OF than Manny. As a matter of fact the only OF that comes to mind that Manny could be better than would have to be Canseco.

Ditto. I think Canseco was a better OF than Manny, actually.

What about Dave Kingman? He might've been as bad as Manny with the leather ..

Perhaps I have been fortunate enough to see Manny haul in a good one a few times. In no way am I saying he is a good fielder...he is not at all. I just know that Bernie has been pretty damn bad this year as well and is extremely slow at chasing balls down. I think we are both agreeing actually that Manny is a poor choice for this position.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a Yankee hater, but since I live in the Apple I am forced to watch/follow/root against the Yankees. That being said, I am very pleased with their problems this year, and for the years to come.

The problem with Bernie Williams in CF is that his range and speed used to compensate for his lack of arm strength, and now he has average range and a below average arm. He is a liability in CF. And the other current options on the Yankees, Matsui or Milkey (sp?) or Crosby or any other stiff, is not an upgrade. Matsui is a smart defender, but doesnt have the requisite tools to roam center.

Manny wouldn't see the field for the Yankees if that were to happen, he would be a DH. He is a liability as well. Almost every good play Manny has made is a result of his own mistake, taking a wrong first step for example. H/W the problem with him being a DH means that you have to put Giambi at first, exposing yourself yet again.

The Yankees will likely make a push for Damon or someone that can actually play CF. They also could trade for Cameron.

In any event, they should focus on defense if they want to improve. That being said, I hope that they go after a power hitter who sucks at defense so that the downward spiral continues.

The Yankees aren't signing Damon: first off, he'd need a shave & a haircut immediately, and secondly, they're not giving him a 4 year deal. He'd probably get that from the Red Sox. And third, Damon is not necessarily a defensive upgrade in CF - he can pick 'em better than Bernie can now, but is arm is the same: well below average.

And, fortunately, the Yankees aren't trading for Cameron. The Mets want too much, and those intra-city deals are always hard to close. Especially for a guy who can help the other team.

I'd like to see Melky win the CF job out of Spring Training next year. The Yanks are very high on him, although I've heard (from bad sources, but I did hear it) that Melky projects to be more of a corner OF than a CF prospect.

I wouldn't bash Manny's fielding too much after that hit he took from Renteria last night...and still held onto the ball. I don't know how he didn't drop that.

Sush-- The kid's got a consistency/attention span issue out there... that's his problem... Sure... he can rob people once in a while... but Manny's problem is "Manny being Manny"

He does have a Cannon for an arm though... which goes largely unnoticed... and he's a good enough fielder, obviously, to play in the corners... (Especially since he's played almost all his career with Johnny Damon or Kenny Lofton next to him... I've heard those tow guys can cover some ground.. :wink2: that tends to minimize some bad decisions and lack of range... )

Anyway... Bernie has been one hell of a ball player, and I hate the Yankees... but its hard not to like Bernie.

Well it's nice to see some other people have seen him make a few good plays before whether or not he screwed something up in order to make them. Manny is NOT cut out for CF and expecially for the Yankees who desperately need a solid defender in that position. The batting of Manny would be nice, but it is totally unnecessary for this team
