Writing a Business Plan

I was wondering if anyone here has ever written a business plan before? I have a great idea, but no idea how to get started on formulating a plan that would describe my idea in every minute detail, and also be attractive to investors. This idea has been a dream for many years now, and I want to do it right. What do I need to do first? What are my resources for getting the information that I need? All I have right now is desire and the knowledge of the commodity that I want to sell as well as the end product that I want to give to people. Is there any literature out there that could be recommended for someone that is a novice? Any help would be appreciated.

I have not written a business plan, and I'm sure you can google it for some ideas, but think about it this way... suppose you wanted to buy whatever it is you want to sell, why would you buy it? Write it down.

If you wanted to invest in your product, why would you want to? Write it down. Including market projections of how you expect to grow, etc.

Basically, write out a statement saying exactly why your idea is a good idea and a money maker, and how you've thought about how to make it (ie Production costs, etc) and make money with it.

Some more thoughts

What are the risks? How do you plan on dealing with them?
What is your goal?
What do you see in 3 years? 5? 20?
Cost?
Overhead?
Anyway to offset those costs? Potential for growth in collateral endevours?
Is there any Regulatory schemes you need to contend with? How are you going to operate within that scheme?

Sounds like you should hire BKB!

There are a lot of books and some inexpensive software out there.

Don't forget the SWOT analysis.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats

Think about barriers to entry, exit, buyer power, rivalry, substitutes.
Product, price, promotion, place

That is about all I remeber from my MBA.:wink2:

My engineerin bakground prevents me from spellin rightly.
there were many helmet to helmet blows in my days. I have lost the ability to count that high, double digits.

The best boss I ever had told I to write a business plan with my position as the company. You had your salary, benefits, expenses, sales and profits. He then would ask you would you hire you? If not, what could you change to convince him otherwise. If you would hire you what could you do to improve performance. It was an eye opening experience.

Here is a link to a book that I generally refer to prospective clients who can't afford consultancy fees. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071395210/sr=1-1/qid=1146347100/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-5663705-8744101?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books

Although the title refers to the successful marketing plan, it focuses on most elements of the business plan.

You can supplement this with a visit to the US government's Small Business Administration (SBA) site, where you can attend free online courses on writing the business plan and on financial planning for start ups http://www.sba.gov/training/courses.html.

Hope this helps you and that you earn millions. Remember, if you do to endow BuckeyePlanet forever!

I really appreciate all of the good input that I have been receiving. I am trying to utilize it as much as I can. Much as I suspected in this process, once I turn over a stone, I find another stone, but I feel like I'm making gradual progress. I am learning more by even trying to write the thing than I ever would have imagined. This is my idea though, my dream really, and I want to do it right, so, "In to a perfect work, time does not enter." If this thing ever takes flight and stays airborn, this site will DEFINATELY recieve its due. Again, thank you guys for all of your help. Keep the good info comin' if you have it. I ALWAYS check it out. Well, except for you........

You can try to get some ideas from this one. I have copied it several times with variable success. It should give you the general format though.

1) Steal Underpants

2) ????

3) Profit

my wife won't let me near the goddamn hamper now......thanks a lot.:pissed:
