Bo knows highlight reel finishes.

The top ranked 174 pounder pinned Arizona State’s Zachary Smith in the first period of the second match of the evening to set the tone for the Buckeyes in a 28-9 win.

Jordan used his legs from the top position to break down Smith and power him to his back with the half nelson. The pin was the first of the year for Bo, who has three wins on the young season.

“I want to focus on the things I can control, which is my effort level and mental approach,” said Jordan after Ohio State’s win.

“I go into every match expecting it to be tough and worry less about the score and more about what I have to do to be successful. ”

The Buckeyes won seven matches total and four by way of bonus points. Including a run of three straight matches by Ohio State’s lightweights.

Defending 125 pound champion Nathan Tomasello picked up a decisive 16-6 win over Ares Carpio. Johnni DiJulius followed with a dominating 16-0 tech fall over Cord Coronado. Micah Jordan blew the match open with an 18-6 win over Robert Mathers.

“I think pursuing your opponent is the best way to win wrestling matches, and our guys who did that tonight were successful.” said head coach Tom Ryan. “We need to continue to develop that instinct to attack, be aggressive and score as many points as possible.

“Overall it was a good win for us.”

Coupled with Ohio State’s blowout wins was a relentless intensity to win the third period in close matches.

Heavyweight Nick Tavenello out conditioned Arizona State’s Tanner Hall and was able to secure a takedown late to beat the ranked Hall 3-1.

Senior Mark Martin made his much anticipated varsity debut at 197 pounds and was able to win a 8-5 positioning battle against Josh Dasilveira.

Making the jump from 178, Martin was able to get two takedowns early and was the aggressor for most of the match. He now moves to 11-1 and should be considered a staple in the lineup from here on out.

Martin got 10 of those wins on the open circuit, while making the decision to either wrestle this season or redshirt in an attempt to bulk up for the weight class.

20th ranked Jake Ryan ended the dual meet in fashion at 157 pounds.

The freshman used is solid defensive attack yet again to take his match against Oliver Pierce into overtime. From there, he was able to get an escape to move to 8-0 on the season with a 2-1 win.

Head Coach Tom Ryan loves the mentality he is seeing from his wrestlers in close matches.

“As you watch you see how hard the sport is. You look for and create situations in practice where you’re competing. I just think it’s a relentless and unwillingness to lose with our crowd pushing them along.”

The toughest opponent on the night was 3rd ranked Blake Stauffer at 184 pounds. Jack Rozema got the start in place of All-American Kenny Courts and gave Stauffer all he could handle.

Down 5-2 with 23 seconds to go, Rozema got in deep on a high single leg takedown and closed the gap to one point. Rozema gave Stauffer the free escape point to attempt a takedown and tie.

The Sun Devil’s best wrestler was able to hold off Rozema in the final 11 seconds and take home a 7-4 victory.

Up next for the Buckeyes is a trip down I-71 to take on the Cleveland State Vikings on Tuesday at 7 PM ET.

There will not be any video coverage of the dual, but fans can follow along on the wrestlingbucks twitter account.
