QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Recruit stays home so as not to offend

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- If Terrelle Pryor, the nation's No. 1 prospect for the 2008 season, has priorities in the recruiting rodeo, he's not saying.

In fact, the quarterback from Jeannette, Pa., said he didn't plan to be in Beaver Stadium last night for the Ohio State-Penn State game just to keep such scuttlebutt on the back burner.

"They're (two of) my top teams; I can't do that," Pryor said the other night after Jeannette wrapped up a 9-0 regular season. "If I go there, and Ohio State, they're there -- that's disrespectful, sort of. I like both schools and I won't do that."

He said he still plans to make an official visit to Ohio State this weekend, though, when Ohio State plays host to Wisconsin.

"Michael Brewster (an Ohio State lineman commitment from Orlando, Fla.) and all of the other recruits are going down there, and they asked me if I would go down there and I said sure," Pryor said. "It's a big game for them, and I just want to go down there and show support."

If we get Terrelle, when is he given a chance to start? I'm guessing his 2nd year he could take over passing the 3 QB's we have.

Is red shirting him a question?

Would JT put him in other rolls his freshman year? (WR, HB, KR, CB)?

I'm not sure how well it would work to have your starting QB also playing basketball. Would he start playing after the bowl game?

I sure hope i get to see some of these things answered when he commits to OSU.

I wonder how last's night destruction of PSU affects Pryor. Is he the type that realizes the Nittany Lions would play him from day one, because they have no one else? Does he have a sympathetic heart to try to bring a resurgance to that program? Or does he go where he knows that he'll be surrounded by talent to bring it every year? Anyone know what sort of motivations this kid has?

One player isn't gong to turn Penn State back into a power, and I think Tyrelle knows that...

I'm not sure if he would play over Pat Devlin; they seem pretty high on that kid. Regardless, I think two issues should play a much bigger role in his potential/expected decision to not attend Penn State. First, the disparity in talent of surrounding cast is completely evident. I'm not sure one receiver on Penn State's roster would crack Ohio State's starting line-up, and I'll take Wells, Wells, and Saine over Kinlaw and Royster any day of the week.

Perhaps more importantly, Penn State has a terrible track record of developing QBs. Zack Mills peaked as a freshman, Michael Robinson now plays RB in the NFL, and Morelli is just a mess. From my limited understanding about recruiting, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I've gathered that a school's ability to help a recruit potentially reach the league is the number 1 factor for most prospects.

OSU got Craig Krenzel into the NFL for a brief stint, got Troy Smith drafted in spite of his height issues (and he would have gone in the first day if not for a little incident in January of 2007), and now Boeckman looks like he might be turning into an NFL-calibre talent.

Say what you will about Tressel and Joe Daniels, but they have shown what they can do with 3 and 4 star recruits at QB. Who knows what they could do with a bona fide 5-star like Terrelle at QB.

Good thoughts guys. This is the way I lean, but not feeling certain.

I think he's more talented than Devlin, but I don't think he'd unseat him right away. Devlin is touted by many PSU fans as the best QB on the team (I don't know how much that carries) but Paterno's loyalty to seniors keeps Morelli on the field.

As far as supporting cast, it's hard to gauge Butler and Norwood. Their numbers are respectable, but who knows how much better they could be if they had a capable QB. Williams is just a bust, no ifs, ands or buts about it. But I do like Robiskie ahead of both Butler and Norwood of course, and I think the two PSU guys are right at where Hartline is in terms of sheer ability.

Royster is a good RB and I think he'll develop into a steady, reliable back, but there's no way anyone could say he and Kinlaw can hold Wells (x2) and Saine's jocks. C. Wells is a top 10 back in the country and the Big 10's second best and it's best pro prospect at the position. M. Wells is very good as a change of pace and I feel Saine is going to be a stud as well. Chris Wells alone is better than any of PSU's backs put together.

PSU has RB Mike Shaw coming in as well as RB/LB Brandon Beachum. They look okay, but nothing that makes you say "wow!". They currently have no wideouts committed this year and only addressed the WR situation last year with a pair of 3* recruits and a 2* recruit as well as a 3* TE. On the other hand, Ohio State has 2007 3* Dane Sanzenbacher, 4* Taurian Washington, 4* Shot Ginn Brandon Saine, 2008 5* DeVier Posey, 4* ATH Lamaar Thomas, 4* TE/WR Jake Stoneburner, 4* ATH Devoe Torrence and arguably the best OL class in history.

In addition, Tressel is one of the best coaches in the country known for adapting his playbook to his players' strengths and Paterno doesn't even control his team or even coach it. He also hasn't changed his playbook since he started coaching

Yeah, real tough choice. I can't believe he hasn't committed already

I really think all this hype Todd Boeckman is getting after yesterday's start might be the final straw for Pryor. NFL-attention this and Tom Brady that about a kid who was unknown to the country coming into this season really has to get some wheels turning in Pryor's head.

I have also been wondering how/when we're going to use him. I'm just not sure that he'll be able to start in front of Schoenhoft in the '09 season. Robbie will still have another couple years of experience under his belt (red-shirt senior) and I think it will be hard to start a true soph over Robbie. No one doubts Schoenhoft's physical talents, he just needs to mentally put it together which I hope he will be able to do over this season and next. However, seeing as how Robbie and Tyrelle should be totally different types of QBs, maybe we'll see a QB rotation with Terrrelle earning more playing time as the season progresses.

From everything I've heard, the final straw for Pryor was a while ago. I remained cautiously optimistic for a while but the signs are too hard to ignore. I will be shocked if he isn't a Buckeye.

The Bucks better get a couple WR recruits that can run 3.9s because when the OSU coaches fix the throwing motion... Terrelle may be able to wing it the length of the football field... His arm strength is unreal...

OSU is clearly getting a rep as a school that teaches fundamentals and improves a player... It's the perfect fit... and it's close to home...

I used to look at clips and wonder "why doesn't he run hard.." and the last video I saw explains it... as it is, he only gets to play half a game because he gets his team such a huge lead they take him out.. if he played hard, he'd only get to play a quarter...

There's a distinct probability we're looking at the future #1 pick.. not a #1 round pick.. THE #1 PICK...

Henton will be in the mixes. Pryor may have to wait his turn.

Are you saying this having seen Pryor's clips? If not, watch some of them and your opinion may change. Henton is still early in his development, and Pryor has far superior physical tools right now. That isn't to bash Henton in any way -- it's just to say that Pryor is that excellent. It's like how Chris Wells came in and was the immediate heir apparent to Pittman.
