Dolphins' Ginn begins to turn the corner

Those were cheers Ted Ginn Jr. heard as he turned into something of an aqua blur on his way to a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown Saturday night.
It must have been a strange moment for Miami's most unloved player of 2007.
The last time Dolphins fans reacted this lustily to anything Ginn did was on draft day, when the announcement of his selection was greeted with groans, and then loud angry boos.
It wasn't Ginn's fault. His name simply wasn't Brady Quinn.
Then, in the span of one Cam Cameron dissertation, Ginn became a punch line that lasted an entire season. Cameron actually told people the Dolphins had just spent a first-round pick, the ninth overall in a draft, on Ginn and his family.
And, oh, by the way, Cameron suggested, the kid he just drafted wasn't necessarily a special player, but rather, just a special teams player for the time being. Ginn had no chance from the start.
But now he is turning that ugly start around as undeniably as he turned Saturday's punt return from a disaster to an amazing moment.

Even though Ginn has established himself as a starting receiver, there has been no discussion about lessening his role as the team's return specialist.
Ginn admitted he'd rather keep his special teams work, despite his increased workload.
"I've done it my whole career," Ginn said. "They know what I can do."
Rookie receiverDavone Bess will serve as Ginn's backup returner.

Miami Dolphins' Ginn just as focused on special teams

The Dolphins' Ted Ginn returns a punt 59 yards for a touchdown against the Chiefs in the second quarter of their preseason game, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at Dolphin Stadium.
The Dolphins might expect more from Ted Ginn Jr. at wide receiver this year. But they don't expect anything less from him on special teams.
Although Ginn figures to play a more significant role on offense in his second season, coach Tony Sparano said Thursday that Ginn will continue to be used regularly as a kick and punt returner.
''It will depend on situations and where we are, but we're not going to be afraid to put Ted back there one way or another,'' Sparano said. ``He may start back there.''
Not that Ginn minds the extra work. He had eight catches for 97 yards in three exhibition games, and he returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown on Aug. 23 against Kansas City. He said he hopes that will be a blueprint for the regular season.
''I've been playing three-ways, or whatever you want to call it, for many years,'' Ginn said. ``It's just one way I can get the ball. I love it. It's a way for me to make a play for my team, so I'm going to continue to do it.''
Wes Welker was an all-purpose threat for the Dolphins in 2006, leading them with 67 catches and averaging more than 22 yards on kickoff returns and 9 yards on punt returns. But they didn't go into that season expecting him to become a go-to receiver.
The team hopes Ginn, an often-criticized 2007 first-round draft pick, will become a legitimate No. 1 receiver.
And although Sparano said Davone Bess and Patrick Cobbs also could be used as returners, Ginn is just as focused on special teams.
''I don't put one before another,'' he said. ``I'm an athlete. That's how I look at myself.''

Buoniconti rips Ginn
By Edgar Thompson | Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Add Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti to list of people wondering when Ted Ginn is going to show signs he was worth the No. 9 pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
Buoniconti appeared on ESPN 760 Tuesday and didn?t pull any punches when the subject of Ginn came up during the Dolphin legend?s interview with Evan Cohen.
?The kid looks like he?s lost on I-95,? Buoniconti said. ?The guy can?t find his way out of the huddle.?
A high school quarterback and the top-rated cornerback in the nation in high school, Ginn didn?t start to play receiver until he arrived at Ohio State in 2004. He?s still learning the position, and it continued to show on Sunday.
The most glaring example occurred in the first quarter when Ginn ran crossing route and chose to go behind Jets CB Darrelle Revis, rather than under him. Revis nearly picked off QB Chad Pennington?s pass.
Ginn didn?t make his first catch - a 3-yard reception - until a little more than six minutes remained in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, Ginn made his best play of the game, catching a 14-yard out on 4th-and-7. He flashed his world-class speed to get wide open.
Otherwise, Ginn did nothing.
