Dolphins' Ginn parlays his lone reception of day into first NFL touchdown

By Emily Badger |Special Correspondent October 29, 2007

LONDON - Dolphins rookie receiver Ted Ginn Jr. had the first touchdown of his career Sunday, although it came a little late to make a difference in the team's eighth consecutive loss this season.

Ginn caught a 21-yard pass from Cleo Lemon, his only reception of the game, with less than two minutes to play. The first-round draft pick was focused on returning punts and kicks most of the season so far, but the trade of veteran receiver Chris Chambers, combined with the winless team looking toward its future, has given Ginn more time on offense.

"If I could take it the other way around, me sitting on the bench and having a better record, it'd be great," Ginn said. "But yes, it is a good thing for me right now, and I'm just going to keep going out and making plays for my team."

Ginn celebration on hold

The only kickoff returner who burst loose was Ginn, and it would have been a counterpunch knockdown for when it happened. Needing a big drive, the Bills had just marched 68 yards for a touchdown and got the two-point conversion to tie the score 10-10.
''It was a short kick,'' Ginn said. ``We read it all week. And I hit it. We had the game in our hand basically the whole night. We knew if we got something going on that particular drive, if it was me returning it, or me getting it to the 50 or whatever, we were going to have to come back.''
Ginn took the kickoff at the 14 on the left side, proceeded upfield, cut across the field and outraced a swift Buffalo coverage unit up the right sideline. Up the field, however, sat the flag for holding on Camarillo, behind whom Ginn had made a cut.
''I found out after everybody started celebrating,'' Ginn said. ``After I got done celebrating, I walked over to the sideline and that's when I realized the crowd [noise] had gone down and the flag was out.''
In front of his locker, next to Ginn's, Camarillo glumly said, ``I thought it was a fair play. I asked [Jenkins] after the game. He said he didn't think it was a penalty, either. But if the refs call it, then I'm guilty.''
As Camarillo left, he and Ginn shared a hand clasp-shoulder bump to signify their solidarity.
Ginn absolved Camarillo of any blame by saying, ``Everybody is trying to make a play.
``Greg was trying to make a play. Sometimes, it just might not go our way.''
