WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

'Best practice' despite injuries

Depth chart: The team released its initial depth chart for Saturday's exhibition opener against Jacksonville. There were few surprises.
The first-string offensive line is the same combination the Dolphins have used in camp: Vernon Carey at left tackle, Liwienski at left guard, Samson Satele at center, Drew Mormino at right guard and Alabi at right tackle. Shelton is the second-team right tackle.
Trent Green and Cleo Lemon are both listed as first-team quarterbacks. Ted Ginn, Kerry Reed, Derek Hagan and David Sutton are all listed as second-team receivers, and Jesse Chatman and Patrick Cobbs are the second-team running backs.
The only surprise on defense is Porter, listed as the starting outside linebacker despite his injury.
Ginn is listed as the kick and punt returner.
Thomas likes rookies: Linebacker Zach Thomas said he is excited about the 24 rookies in camp, and not just top picks Ginn and John Beck.
He said the performances of running back Lorenzo Booker, linebacker Robert McCune and the five first-year offensive linemen are among the best he has ever seen from Dolphins rookies.
"I know it's early, but this is one of the best classes we've had in a long time ... (and) I've never said that about a class," said Thomas, who was drafted by Miami 11 years ago. "We missed on a lot of drafts, and it hasn't just been in the last couple years. It's been a long time."

Ginn in TC

8/7 Night Practice: The throw of the night - Hamdan to Ginn down the sideline. Hamdan with a perfect throw. Lemon in, from the 30.
First play he goes for Ginn wide open in back of the end zone. The throw is long, but Ginn catches the ball out of bounds and runs into the padded wall behind the end zone. Impressive concentration.

Ginn's potential excites team

Downplaying expectations, coach Cam Cameron said before camp that receiver Ted Ginn's initial focus will be on the return game. But after watching the first-rounder in camp, several Dolphins players are excited about what he'll do offensively as a rookie. And receivers coach Terry Robiskie said Tuesday he's progressing well offensively, though ''he's still got some cobwebs'' as he learns the system.

''I think he is going to be a major contributor [on offense this year],'' defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday predicted, adding the team needs him to be ''one of those go-to guys'' and that his route running is ''nothing like'' the negative accounts he heard.

But Ginn admitted Tuesday he's sometimes ''a little confused'' and ''it's hard when you're trying to play fast and think fast.'' Robiskie told Ginn after practice Tuesday: ``It's just one or two times I've looked at [you] that I've really seen [you] just take off and go.''

Robiskie said at times, Ginn seems uncertain what to do: ``When he gets in his stance, I can see the smoke coming out of his ears. I tell you who's doing a great job with him -- John Beck, walking him through things after practice, communicating with him.''

The rest of Robiskie's progress report is mostly glowing: ``His hands have been good. He's been catching the ball extremely well. His route running is good [and] getting better. He's got speed, quickness.''

One negative: ''He's quiet to the point where we've got to get him unquiet'' when he calls out to his blockers before fielding punts and kickoffs.

Robiskie said, ''I believe he will make a significant contribution.'' But at receiver this year? ''I hope,'' he said. ``. . . Guys like Teddy, the sky is the limit. There is no telling what the guy might do.''

At the least, Ginn figures to begin the season playing in four-receiver sets, barring something unforeseen. Agent Drew Rosenhaus, who doesn't represent Ginn, predicted on TV that he will be starting by midseason.

Ginn (59 receptions for 781 yards and nine TDs at Ohio State last season) cautioned, ''It will take time to be a great player.'' But he added, ``I don't understand why people keep saying I'm not a receiver. If I wasn't a receiver, they probably would have never taken me.''

Chris Chambers said because of Ginn's ``world-class speed, me and Marty Booker can come underneath and make plays. It will be cool. He will play this season, but you can ease him in.''

HYDE: Dolphins need top-pick Ginn to make some noise

As a rookie receiver, Ted Ginn Jr. says there are three things he really has to concentrate on every play. He's pretty sure of that number. He's holds up three fingers to stress the point.

First, there's the play itself coming at him in a language that could be Swedish it's still so convoluted to his rookie ear. Second, he needs to pick out of the verbiage where to line up. Third, there's his job, the route to run or defender to block.

"You've got to read the defense, too," he says.

Uh, that's four things.

Touchdown Teddy getting the start tonight!

Looks like Booker won't be playing tonight and Teddy is getting the start. Hope his NFL debut is as good as his Buckeye debut was, or even better.

Rookie first-round pick Ted Ginn will be a starter in his professional debut. Ginn is scheduled to start at one receiver spot opposite Chris Chambers, but only because veteran Marty Booker will not play.
Booker missed several days of practice this week with a sore knee.
It is unclear exactly how Cameron will break down the playing time for the defense.

In all, the Dolphins are expected to start four rookies on offense and defense with guard Drew Mormino and center Samson Satele joining Ginn and Soliai.

Sweet I hope he takes the opening kickoff back to the house!

Yeah man you have no idea how sweet that would be. I wonder if Del Rio is gonna give Teddy some good punt returns instead of kicking away from him, I want Teddy to show the NFL the difference between "speed" and "world class speed". So far in Training Camp he hasn't shown his speed that much, they said he's been showing flashes of it but the offensive coordinator said that Teddy is holding back some, maybe because of the heat down here.

"I've had some good ones but he's probably got the most potential of all the guys," said Dolphins special teams coach Keith Armstrong when asked where Ginn ranks among all the kick returners he has coached. "He's got speed and he has a feel, he just has a knack for it and he's got some intangibles, a feel for the returns that you can't coach. I think he's got a combination of initial quickness and raw speed, which is rare obviously."

Armstrong is looking forward to Saturday night's preseason game against Jacksonville at Dolphins Stadium when Ginn will see live action against a different colored jersey for the first time. He said Ginn hasn't really been tested to this point in camp because the coaching staff has been trying to create situations and he has responded.

One look at any of the highlight films from Ginn's days at Ohio State will give a good indication of what the speedster can do in the open field on kick and punt returns. In fact, the Buckeyes' lone highlight from their blowout loss to Florida in the BCS National Championship game was Ginn's return of the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, he injured his foot during the end zone celebration but he appears to have fully recovered.

"Returning a punt and returning a kickoff are two different things other than on both of them the ball is in the air," Ginn said. "It's just a little bit more spaced out on a kickoff return than on the punt and it just takes a little more time and a little more strategy when you've got a punt than a kick because all you've got to do is really hit the hole and go."

As electrifying as Ginn has been and is expected to be on returns, he emphasizes the importance of his blockers opening up the holes and creating a lane to run through.

Rookies offer few highlights in opener
Rookies Ted Ginn and John Beck took the field for the first time as Dolphins on Saturday but left little to remember.

On the opening kickoff, Ginn showed the kind of speed that enticed the Dolphins to take him No. 9 overall. He took the kickoff a the goal line, near the left sideline.

Once things got stopped up on the left, Ginn dipped outside right, a move that works for speed returners in college, but in the NFL, usually gets them little more than a lesson on how much faster the play-for-pay game is. After that, Ginn couldn't find room to build any speed on his kickoff returns and both Jacksonville punts went into the Dolphins end zone.

On offense, Ginn often lined up outside to the left, sometimes with Az-Zahir Hakim as the slot receiver.

It was out of that formation that on third-and-15 from the Jacksonville 37 he easily beat single coverage and was so wide open, he likely would have scored. Quarterback Trent Green didn't see Ginn deep and underthrew David Martin short on the same side.

''First game, he saw something he wanted to go to,'' Ginn said. ``Trent's going to see whoever's open and get you the ball. You've just got to keep playing the game and he'll spread it out.''

Green had taken a shot to Ginn deep down the left sideline in the first quarter, but overthrew him. Ginn did have one catch on a short route that he turned into a 9-yard gain before he was pushed out of bounds.

Ginn started in place of receiver Marty Booker and alongside Chris Chambers, but the rookie played only the first half and there wasn't much to make of his night either way. He had one reception for 9 yards, three kickoff returns for 56 yards (18.7-yard average), and was on the field for two punt returns but didn't get a chance to field either.

"I think I did good," Ginn said. "It was very exciting. I was amped to get out there and play pre-season ball."

As it turned out, the 5-foot-11, 178-pound All-America didn't get many chances to show off his speed. Both of his punt-return opportunities ended as touchbacks as Jacksonville punter Adam Podlesh put the ball into the end zone.

"It's the way the game is played," Ginn said. "You're not always going to get a chance on punt returns and kickoff returns."

Looks like Miami fans will have made asses out of themselves...again.

Well, I would wait for a real game before making that statement.

Besides it has nothing to do with Ginn, and more about Beck versus Quinn. If Quinn become a great QB like Manning or a very good QB like Palmer, and Beck is a bust, then the Fins will be made a huge mistake, no matter how good Ginn is. The franchise QB over an All Star WR is an easy call all the time.
