WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Cameron: Deal with Ginn close
By EDGAR THOMPSON

DAVIE ? Miami Dolphins coach Cam Cameron doesn't expect the Ted Ginn Watch to become a distraction.

The Dolphins rookies and other first-year players with the club opened camp Tuesday with the first-round draft pick the team's only unsigned rookie.

Time is running out before owner Wayne Huizenga's vow not to play rookie holdouts will be put to the test.

Cameron said he and the organization are "all on the same page" with Huizenga, but the first-year coach doesn't anticipate Ginn will miss the opening of training camp Friday.

"I can't give you any specifics on the negotiations," Cameron said. "I know they are getting close. I can tell you that much."

He added "Let's just see how it plays, and see if it gets to a point where it becomes a concern."

Ginn sat out the team's May mini-camp to rehabilitate a foot injury. Cameron estimated Ginn was about 90-percent healthy when he practiced during the June mini-camp.

But Cameron said Ginn should be able to step in and help immediately because the Dolphins plan to use him primarily as a kick and punt returner while his receiving skills develop.

That doesn't mean Ginn's lack of practice time is not an issue.

"There is a huge benefit to being here," Cameron said. "We are all on board with the mind-set there that it is critical for all these guys to be in camp."

Ginn's agent never in a rush

Ginn, a receiver and kick returner, missed the first two days of workouts for rookies. But coach Cam Cameron said this week that he expects Ginn, the No. 9 pick from Ohio State, to be in camp Friday when the full squad reports.

That would be an exception for one of Cornrich's players.

"When Neil Cornrich is the agent, you always have a holdout," a source who has negotiated many NFL contracts said Wednesday. "He's had a lot."

Remember NFL contracts aren't guaranteed and he's coming off of a foot injury. This signing bonus is what has to sustain Ted for the rest of his life maybe if there's another injury, so getting it done right is very important. I am not worried at all about Ted not being there yet. If he's in by this weekend everything will be absolutely fine. Once he's on the field everyone will forget all about the draft and any possible holdout anyway.

Ginn expected to report by deadline

Dolphins seeking wise guys
As Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's noon deadline approaches today, it appears very likely wide receiver Ted Ginn will indeed report to camp on time with a contract agreement intact.

Both sides were working feverishly late Thursday evening toward putting the finishing touches on a deal. For several hours, Dolphins executives were even optimistic they would have their first-round draft pick signed by the end of the night Thursday.

The principal terms of Ginn's contract have been in place since Monday, but both sides still needed several days to iron out backside incentives and extras. The process, however, was stalled for several reasons, including a lack of signings by first-round players.

Progress quickly picked up when two other draft picks -- Falcons defensive end Jamaal Anderson (eighth overall) and Bucs defensive end Gaines Adams (fourth overall) -- agreed to terms.

Anderson's contract specifically -- a five-year deal reportedly worth nearly $15.5 million in guaranteed money -- gave the Dolphins and Ginn's representatives a firmer grasp of this year's market value.

Huizenga has threatened to bench any draft pick for the year who didn't finish their contract by the start of training camp, which officially begins today.

''I have all the confidence in the world, that when it's all said and done, no matter which way it plays out, by noon [today], that the Miami Dolphins in good faith have given their best effort,'' coach Cam Cameron said shortly after noon on Thursday.

``And that's all I need to know.''

Good deal in comparison:

The 8th pick Jamaal Anderson: Signed a five-year, $15.361 million in guarantees.

The 10th pick Amobi Okoye : Signed July 27 to 6-year, $17.6M deal

Looks like Houston worked hard to get that deal with Okoye to ensure that 6th year, Okoye with his age probably needed a 6 year deal for a team more then any other player.

Two sources confirmed that Ginn received approximately $13.5 to $14 million in guaranteed money. Let's split the difference and say $13.75M in guarantees over 5 years. Thats $2.75M a year. Anderson's deal is woth $3.072M a year while Okoye's is worth $2.93M a year. If Okoye's money is guaranteed, Ginn has reason to be somehwat upset...

I really don't think Ginn would care, from what I've seen and heared about Ginn, he doesn't seem like the greedy type. He just wants to get on that field and play ball. Dolphins scored by getting Ginn. Everyone will see.

I am pretty sure it has to do with the 6th year, I would have to double check previous years, but anymore players don't want that 6th year, then want to hurry up and get to their 2nd contract at a young age, so they can either get a good deal, or so that they still young enough that they arn't 'washed up' come their 3rd contract.

True, but if I'm the #9 pick and #10 ends up getting almost $200,000 a year more than me, then I'm going to be at least a little bit pieved...

I dunno, I think Ginn got a good deal considering if you look at last year:

4th pick: Ferguson: 5 years 27.5 million
5th pick: Hawk: 6 years 37.5 million

Also this talks about the 6th year
3. Bunkley, Philadelphia: Wichard made the best of a very bad situation. Beyond the fact that the Eagles wouldn't budge on a six-year deal, the player selected directly in front of Bunkley, Cleveland Browns linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, signed the worst deal of the first round (more on that later). The result was a holdout that finally allowed Bunkley to get more guaranteed money than Wimbley ($9.5 million vs. $8.67 million), better cash flow over the first four years of the deal than either Wimbley or No. 12 pick Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens, and nearly $3 million more in expected earnings compared to Wimbley. Beyond that, Bunkley can have his 2011 base pay increased to whatever the franchise tag is for defensive tackles.
Bunkley will have better cash flow as a 14 pick then Ngata at the 12 pick due to 6 year instead of 5 years.

Ginn 'ready to start rolling'
Miami signed first-round draft pick Ted Ginn before Wayne Huizenga's imposed deadline. The receiver's next task is proving he was worth that pick.
BY JEFF DARLINGTON

Ginn signed a five-year contract worth nearly $13.5 million in guaranteed money, which will allow him to participate in the first full-squad practice, at 8:15 a.m. today.

''We all had the same goal -- to come in and be on time and get ready to start rolling,'' Ginn said when asked if he felt pressure to sign because of owner Wayne Huizenga's imposed deadline. ``And it all worked out fine.''

Fueling more questions about Ginn's future, Cameron repeatedly has said the team will first groom the ninth-overall pick into a kick returner before utilizing his ability as a receiver. And that's fine with him -- for now.

''I guess that's his plan of how he wants to do things,'' Ginn said.

But the rookie made it clear Friday he has bigger plans for his NFL career than special-teams contributions. Will he soon be a starting wide receiver in the NFL?

''Oh yes,'' said Ginn, who had 135 receptions for 1,943 yards and 15 touchdowns during a three-year career at Ohio State. ``For sure.''

He said he doesn't feel any different than he did before the injury, but he will leave it up to the medical staff to diagnose his limits.

''I feel like I'm back,'' Ginn said.
