WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Coxew, it is possible to be happy with our offense, think Ginn is playing a key role and also wonder how we can improve. I was very happy with how our offense played against an overrated Iowa defense and their HS dline.

Defenses will stop falling for the decoy role, which is why I think it will not continue. I am confident Tressel knows what he's doing.

My disgust after the SDSU game was with our offensive execution more than the playcalling... same with the Texas game.

that being said, i would feel a lot better if he was getting the ball and making plays. i just keep telling myself, it will come, it will come...
As Gonzo and Holmes continue to make plays, they're either going to draw some of the attention that Ginn is getting, opening him up more or teams can continue to focus on Ginn and let the other guys run free. It's a no lose situation for us. A TD scored by Ted is still worth six points, the same as if Holmes or Gonzo score.

This was probably the part that was meant to worry us the most, I take it?

I think this is a debate manufactured by the writer for the purpose of publication, with mutually exclusive quotations obtained under different circumstances and with differing premises.

My take on this is that SN spoke with JT and asked about Ginn Jr.'s rate of use and development.

Later the same writer gets Ginn Sr. on the phone and says he has heard some or someone claim that Teddy is still a work in progress at WR.

The Glenville HC and sire of Teddy Jr. then utters his quote.

Notice what is missing here - (and it is missing IN the article itself) any assertion by Ted Ginn Sr. that JT does not know what he talking about.

Notice also that JT's quote is one that speaks to continued development (surely true of all WR at OSU, probably outside of Holmes), not a reconstruction project - which is closer to what Sr.'s quote responds to.

I really don't have the impression from anything Ginn Sr. has put in print before that he is afraid of saying exactly what is on his mind. So, if the writer had asked him for reaction to an implied, but curiously not quoted assertion by JT that so thoroughly denounced his son's capabilities (which JT's actual quote does not do), I think that the blistering response would have been different in nature from that which was actually quoted. I.e., Ginn Sr. would have clearly expressed his surprise with the (implied) source of the criticism of his son's WR skills.

Eh, Ted Sr. is just sticking up for Teddy b/c he's his dad. This is nothing. THink about this - every NFL rookie has been running routes since their were kids. Does this mean that all of them have nothing to learn about running routes? Of course they do. That's why they are rookies. Ted Sr. knows this.

"Nothing to see here...keep moving"

That wasn't directed at you, just fans (callers) in general who are complaining about Ginn not getting the ball. They don't know anything about football other than who wins and some stats and see that Ted is not the one getting the ball. Like you said, we put up over 500 yards of offense. Where's the problem?

There is no doubt we can say Gonzo's success is due to Ginn and Holmes. It will be difficult for Ted if we keep him on the left like we have. Holmes seems to have better success because he is mostly on Troy's right. The one play Ted had from the right this week was typical Ted. He made great moves to make positive yardage. I just don't think he gets the attention being on the left most of the time. Our stats for the games show we throw right most of the time. Just like we run right too. We went to him twice on the left, once third and short and he delivered. The other was third and long and the defender did a good job containing him. It was still an 8 yard gain. I do think we need to look his way more often. His punt return was awesome too. He needed no help on that one. I feel bad for him. It seems everything is stacked against him. The reverse is gone for him. Everyone is gaurding against it. You need surprise for the reverse and everyone expects it. I wan't to see more bubble screens. I think he could do tremendous damage if we get him the ball 5 more times. 3 catches just won't cut him loose.:osu:

This is why he is a Reporter and Tressel is a coach. I have a lot of respect for Ted Sr. but his comments seem more from a father than a coach. Looking at the glass half full. OSU is 3-1 with a loss to # 2 Texas without using our most dynamic player. Balance is the hardest offense to defend. The play of others will help open things for Ginn and return the favor. Smith being the number 1 QB will also help. Tressel coaches for the season and not just one game we have not seen all their playbook. Ginn stormed the nation late last year and got plenty of type and hype. Patience is a virtue and bigger games are ahead.

Both of Gonzo's TDs and Holmes' long gain were to the left. I think this "Ginn is lost on the left" thing is a little overstated. It makes sense that Troy can throw right easier, but the above plays are gamebreaking receptions made from the undesirable left (along with Holmes deep against Texas). The bubble screen to the left to Ginn sure hasn't worked very well.

And Ginn touches the ball three times. The obvious question: Why?
Maybe the writer should watch the game tape and maybe TG1 should too. He actually touched it more. Too bad for Teddy Sr. that Jr. dropped the first two passes (one from each QB) thrown his way.

Run Ginn on reverses; get him direct snaps at quarterback.
They did run him on reverses. Each time they've tried it this year, the play has dried up due to either the line missing a block or TG2 dancing and juking way too much - instead of using his speed to get the corner.

Certainly he means more than Schnittker or Gonzalez.
This Buckeye fan has no problem watching Gonzalez run good routes and catch TD passes. I don't care if it's Holmes, Gonzo, Ginn or anyone. Do the job and score points.

I'll bet if you asked Santonio's parents or former coach, they would tell you he isn't getting enough touches either. Same goes for Roy Hall who was running open most of Saturday's game.

You also have a QB who is still learning to be a QB and progress through his reads. Troy will get better and better and better as the year goes on in spreading the ball around.

The last reverse we saw with Ted didn't work at all. Maybe it needs to be setup more. All in all the touches will come for Ted as the year goes on.

He's got to sell magazines and web-site hits, and TG2 is s known quantity.

Just like Matt Hayes being an asswipe of a writer is a known quantity. To those of us who know his stuff.
you really should post that comment on the sportingnews article  (not the repost on Yahoo that's linked aboev)
