WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

You know, that all depends on Robbie Schoenhoft and Chris Wells.
can you point me to a thread or article that specifically talks about how well schoenhoft performed during the offseason at osu? i'm curious why so many posters think that he will naturally assume or threat to assume the role of starting qb next year. most of the accolades and compliments i've read regard his high school career only. zwick, too, was a great high school qb who was supposed to be osu's savior. while that's anecdotal, i hate already hedging next year's qb success on someone largely unproven.

by the way, i love seeing the clips of wells from even his junior year. he was a man among boys as a 16 year old. for some of those clips, i swear he was running against junior high teams. he's faster than i thought he would be for his size. he's a bouncer. what i also gleaned from his clips was that he runs with high knees. such a running style shows oodles of energy, and it's harder to tackle a guy who may knock you out with those pistons pumping so high in the air.

I don't have any links to any articles, but I know back in the spring when people were talking about who was making good spring impacts, a few players mentioned Rob as having a big future at quarterback. He even earned praise from a few of the coaches for his play in the spring.

Add that to the fact that he absolutely tore up the Big 33, looked good in the North South game, he has possibly one of the strongest arms ever to come to OSU, is very athletic, accurate, and has a quick release, and that is why people are so high on him.

To put it plainly, if you could put together a perfect Quarterback prospect, Rob would have all the physical characteristics (as a pocket passer). Hopefully he'll be able to make the reads, and progress as a person on and off the field.

Lol.

If you think Jim Tressle is going to start a redshirt freshman QB ahead of Boeckman and at least one, most likely both of the senior QB's we'll have next year I've got some Enron stock you might be interested in. I don't care how good he looked in practice or how great he was in high school. It ain't going to happen.

Back on topic Holmes is playing on Sundays next year, period.

i'd like to think that tressel would start the best quarterback period. if either schoenhoft or boeckmann is playing well enough to start, i as well agree that the quarterback won't start right out of the gates. but, i do see the quarterback playing as soon as the opportunity arises. the problem is that next year we have another very early game against texas. because of this, i don't see a fresh, largely unproven quarterback starting against texas... unless the offseason is so spectacular as to warrant a start against texas. all i know is that it could be a very unhealthy atmosphere if no quarterback has solidified the starting spot by next year. we could have four battling. such a battle could make the winner all the better, but that is the best possible scenario we could hope for. it will be interesting.

however, that is months and months away. there are quite a few games left for this season.

at least texas won't have vince next year.

I personally think that if a player redshirts, and spends four years with a team, then he's not leaving "early". He's leaving on time...he just isn't taking advantage of the extra time he could have from redshirting. It probably wasn't his choice to redshirt. I didn't spend 5 years in college, why should a player? I personally don't know if Santonio is tall enough to be an impact WR in the NFL. I think Michael Jenkins is a much better reciever, especially to the NFL. Santonio is the closest thing we have on offense to a leader...somebody that will make the big play. And he's not doing it. Nobody is. In 2002 we had Krenzel, Clarett, and Jenkins. They all had the ability to take the game over, make a huge play when needed, and just know how to step up. A team needs those players to when close games. We don't have that. We NEED that. Even last year we had it, in Teddy...but that's a whole different story this year.

don't forget Hartsock as a big player that year.

I also agree with being here 4 years qualifies as not leaving early.

I hate to disagree, but I think Holmes will be a great nfl player. It seems that size is not a huge deal when it comes to recievers in the nfl. Especially if he is 6'. I think they will put him in the slot and he will have a good career.

Heard of Terry Glenn? Joey Galloway? They are both 5'11.

2005, 04, 03, 02 Pro Bowl selections: Torry Holt 6', Marvin Harrison 6', Hines Ward 6', Derrick Mason 5'10", Laveranues Coles 5'11", Donald Driver 6', Michael Lewis 5'8"

The best fantasy football WR? 5'9" Steve Smith

There are plenty of very effective WRs no taller than 6'. Somehow I think 5'11" Santonio will be just fine.
I think that Holmes will be a great slot receiver in the NFL. He runs crisp routes, and plays fast. I think he'd do well in a system like Indianapolis or St. Louis.
probably, but not just in the slot. Bruce & Holt are both 6'. Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison are 6', Stokely 5'11".

The "prototypical WR" size is very overrated.

Just to put a thought out there, but since when is it the job of tOSU to get these guys into the NFL.. I know that it is a goal of many, but the the job of the university is to enable these KIDS to get an education at no expense to them. they run the risk of not completing thier degree and having to pay the remainder out of pocket if the dont make it in the NFL ( I dont know the percentage but I bet it isnt good even for those who are drafted). I dont really feel sorry for guys who leave early for the "Big Money" but end up failing.

On a separate note I think when they rework the Collective Bargaining agreement, Rookie salarys need to be dramatically reduced. Would a player be less likely to quit college for the NFL knowing thier max salary was say 1 Mil. a year. The NBA does pretty well and they have set salaries for where you are drafted (Im pretty sure) Players sign much quicker and dont hold out.

Look at KWII and the waste he has been to my Browns! He was the highest paid TE in the NFL BEFORE even playing a down. Theres something wrong with this picture if you ask me.

rookies are a little too highly paid, I'd agree. But if they get injured, they get next to nothing. The NFL is pretty harsh about screwing you even if you accidentally get hurt (not just if you are Mr. Kellen Knievel).

Holmes is a 4th year junior. He probably is close to graduating, and if he doesn't he won't have many classes to pay for. He's not leaving early. Tressel redshirted him in 2002.

i wasnt talking about Santonio, just greedy players in general. I understand his case, trying to raise a family and being in his forth year. This is more towards players like MC, who are only in it for the Money and take schol forgranted. Why cant we have more players like Robert Smith or Mike Doss (in college not pro) or Craig Krenzels. How many of us wouldnt mind getting paid to play a game and yet most of them take everything forgranted and are put on a higher level above the law per say. On another board we had a guy saying it was ok for Charles rogers to do drugs because it is common and isnt a big deal. Maybe Im just ranting here.

This want directed towarsds Holmes at all, just towards the aforementioned types of players.
