WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Former Buckeyes Among NFL's Top 100 Players
Mangold and Holmes named to list released by NFL.com
July 7, 2011

NFL's Top 100 players

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Two former Buckeyes were named among the NFL's Top 100 current players, according to NFL.com.

The list was voted on by current players in the league. Nick Mangold and Santonio Holmes, both members of the New York Jets, came in at No. 47 and No. 76, respectively.

Mangold, who played for the Buckeyes from 2002-04, has helped the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship games after being drafted by the Jets in the first round of the 2004 Draft. Widely regarded as one of the best centers in the NFL, Mangold helped the Jets rank third in league in rushing in 2010.

Holmes played for the Buckeyes from 2003-05 and was named Super Bowl XLIII MVP for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009. He teammed up with Mangold in New York in 2010, recording 52 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. As a Buckeye, Holmes totaled 140 catches for 2,295 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Report: Skins plan to target Holmes, Jenkins
Santonio Holmes - WR - New York Jets

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora reports the Redskins plan to make a "splash" in free agency, targeting WR Santonio Holmes, OG Marshal Yanda, DE Cullen Jenkins, NT Kris Jenkins, and DT Barry Cofield.

LaCanfora is an ex-Redskins beat writer, and his report is impressively detailed. Landing Holmes is coach Mike Shanahan's "primary objective," with Yanda also high on the list. The Jets and Ravens are expected to "fight vigorously" to retain those players. The Jenkins Brothers are more realistic targets, and league sources believe the 'Skins will land both in a package deal. Despite coming from a 4-3 defense, Cofield has been "the subject of offseason planning" by the Redskins. It's clear that Shanahan plans to reload rather than rebuild in what will turn out to be critical season for his future in Washington.

Santonio Holmes is expected to be a hot commodity
Posted by Mike Florio on July 14, 2011

Last Thursday, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez told me during a visit to The Dan Patrick Show that the third-year quarterback would like to bring back as many of last season?s players as possible in 2011.

Mark may not get his wish.

There?s a growing buzz that receiver Santonio Holmes will be a hot commodity once free agency opens. Already linked to the historically big-spending Redskins, other teams looking to comply with the heightened salary floor could decide to spend some money on a guy who made one of the all-time best plays in Super Bowl history, and who otherwise has a knack for showing up in the clutch.

That said, there are two issues that could cut against Holmes getting a gigantic payday. First, the new labor deal still could give teams the ability to apply a ?right of first refusal? to players who would have been restricted free agents under the 2010 rules. Holmes, drafted in 2006, has five years of service, which would make him eligible for a ?right of first refusal? designation if the new CBA gives teams that unwarranted (in our view) privilege. Though Holmes would still get paid handsomely, another team may not be willing to take the time to sign Holmes to an offer sheet, if there?s any chance the Jets would match it.

Santonio Holmes (l.) figures to catch attention from the Jets and Redskins. The battle could highlight a wild free-agent season that will be a whole lot more exciting than the lockout.

The Jets play the Redskins in Washington on Dec. 4. There's a very good chance Santonio Holmes will be playing in that game. But for which team?

Bringing back Holmes, the top wide receiver playmaker on the market, as an unrestricted free agent is the Jets' No. 1 priority. Sources say the Redskins have also made Holmes their No. 1 priority.

'Strong' chance Santonio stays with Jets: agent
Jets Blog
By STEVE SERBY
July 25, 2011

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, likely to be one of the most popular free agents now that the NFL lockout is over, has a good chance to stay with the Jets.

Holmes' agent, Joel Segal, told The Post on Monday, "Santonio loves New York, he's a fan of the head coach, he likes the quarterback, he likes the system. There's a strong possibility of Santonio staying in New York. He's a huge fan of New York."

The Redskins reportedly will make an attempt to sign Holmes, who played last season for the Jets after being traded from the Steelers.

"I spoke to Santonio numerous times. We have a plan," Segal said. "We know our priorities and we're ready to go."

The NFL lockout ended Monday when players finally signed off on a new collective bargaining agreement that the owners approved last Thursday.

All offseason activity has been shut down since March, leaving a limited amount of time for teams to sign players before camps open this week.

"This is going to be unprecedented and historical," Segal said of free agency.

"There are going to be so many free agents that you don't want to get in a game of musical chairs and not have a seat at the end. You might move more quickly because you now have free agents from last year who were restricted becoming free agents, so there are almost two classes of free agents now.

"You have to make sure there are jobs for them after the traditional, first-wave free agents. That process sometimes can take a month. I don't see that happening now."

Jets extend offer to free agent receiver Santonio Holmes
Published: Tuesday, July 26, 2011
By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

For months, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has been speculated to be the team's top free agent target.

Now, on the first day of free agency, the Jets have extended an offer to Holmes, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for either side.

Terms of the offer were not immediately available. The timing is interesting, as news came soon after receiver Santana Moss reportedly agreed to a 3-year, $15 million deal with the Redskins, per ESPN. Washington was expected to be one of the teams in hot pursuit of Holmes, with the potential to price other teams out.

Earlier today, a person with knowledge of the Jets' plans said fellow Jets free agent receiver Braylon Edwards was still in play for the team, in case it was priced out of the Holmes sweepstakes. That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for the team.

Jets aim to lock up Holmes; Sanchez willing to rework deal
Jets Blog
By BRIAN COSTELLO and STEVE SERBY
July 27, 2011

The Jets? front office wasted no time beginning its pursuit of free- agent wide receiver Santonio Holmes, and the team may get an assist from quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The Jets were the first team to talk with Holmes? agent, Joel Segal, yesterday morning, and made the wide receiver an offer later in the day, according to a source. Holmes is one of the top free agents on the market and is going to command big money. Sanchez said he is willing to restructure his contract to give the Jets cap space to pursue Holmes and other free agents.

?My agent?s already talked to me about it,? Sanchez said. ?Whatever we need to do to win, it?s on. I think our whole team feels that way. If [Darrelle] Revis, me, whoever, it doesn?t matter. ... We?ll do whatever we can.?

Sanchez, who is entering his third season, has a salary-cap figure of $17.7 million. The Jets are not in a dire cap situation but could use some help if they hope to bring back Holmes and/or Braylon Edwards at wide receiver and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, as well as other pieces.

As the Jets players began reporting back to the team?s facility at 10 a.m., general manager Mike Tannenbaum was on the phone with Segal, getting a jump on the competition for Holmes. Segal said shortly after talking to the Jets he spoke with two other teams.

?We?ve had good communications,? Segal said.

Holmes left money on table to stay with Jets
By Jason La Canfora
Published: July 27th, 2011

Santonio Holmes, who agreed to a deal that averages slightly less than $10 million per season with $24 million guaranteed, took less money to remain with Jets, according to league sources.

Three teams, including the Redskins, were very interested in Holmes. Holmes loves his young teammates, though, and quickly formed a strong bond with coach Rex Ryan and QB Mark Sanchez.

Santonio Holmes named one of five Jets captains, feels like he's found a home on Rex Ryan's squad

Santonio Holmes is named one of five Jets captains, much to his surprise and delight.

Santonio Holmes is now a Jet for life. At least, that is how Rex Ryan wants him to feel. If the reported $50 million deal did not make Holmes feel at home in green and white, Ryan gave the controversial wide receiver some more stake in the team.

Of the five captains named Saturday, Holmes was the only one who was not originally drafted by the Jets. He was also, perhaps, the most surprising pick.

"It's unexpected," Holmes said Saturday after the Jets' last practice before heading to Houston for Monday's preseason opener. "Coming from where I came from, tryouts pretty much for one year, being here, everything worked out in my favor."

Ryan had already named Mark Sanchez a captain for the offense. Saturday, he named cornerback Darrelle Revis and nose tackle Sione Pouha the defensive captains. He named Eric Smith the captain for the special teams. Unlike past years, Ryan simply chose the captains and did not have the team vote.

"Santonio was a guy we brought in. (He) went from, as we look at him, from a rental to an owner, a guy that was here, we tested, we tried it out and now he's one of us," Ryan said. " I expect the last jersey he'll ever wear to be a New York Jets jersey and we're extremely happy that he chose to come back. I see (Holmes) as a guy that took the challenge that I gave him. I wanted him to lead from the front and I think that's what he's doing."
