WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

High tenders for Santonio, Cro; no LT cut in sight
Jets Blog
By PAUL SCHWARTZ
March 2, 2011

The Jets don't want receiver Santonio Holmes or cornerback Antonio Cromartie going anywhere.

That much is obvious after the team yesterday gave Holmes and Cromartie the highest possible qualifying offers -- a first- and third-round tender -- which will most likely keep both players with the Jets if they indeed become restricted free agents.

But these tenders could be rendered meaningless because the expiring Collective Bargaining Agreement and looming lockout will play havoc with free agency. It is unclear what the rules for five-year veterans like Holmes and Cromartie would be under a new labor deal.

STAYING IN GREEN: Though the looming lockout puts their status in doubt, the Jets took a step yesterday toward retaining wideout Santonio Holmes (above) and cornerback Antonio Cromartie by giving the restricted free agents the highest possible qualifying offer.

If the NFL and the NFL Players Association agree to play the 2011 season under the rules of the old CBA, which is not likely to happen, the tenders would remain in effect. In that case, any team interested in signing Holmes or Cromartie would have to relinquish a first and a third-round draft pick, a high price that essentially ensures Holmes and Cromartie will return to the Jets.

Holmes talks about re-signing with Jets
March, 7, 2011
By Rich Cimini

Maybe it's nothing. Maybe it's something. Either way, it deserves a mention.

In a Facebook video that was presumably taped over the weekend, Santonio Holmes talks confidently about re-signing with the Jets. As everybody knows, the dynamic wide receiver will be a free agent -- either restricted or unrestricted, depending on the new CBA. It's believed that Holmes is No. 1 on the Jets' free-agent priority list. In this video, it sounds like the Jets are No. 1 on Holmes' list. (Kudos to twitter follower @makeitalways for sending along the link.)

Here's the set-up: Holmes turned 27 on March 3, and he makes the video at his birthday party at his mother's house. Holmes is standing in a memorabilia room that is filled with stuff from his former team, the Steelers. Holmes explains that his stepfather is a Steelers fan, but he suggests that will change soon.

"Trust me, as soon as I sign back with the Jets, everything will be taken care of," Holmes says.

Sounds pretty confident, huh? He almost makes it sound like it's a done deal. If the video was shot over the weekend, Holmes already was aware of his RFA tender -- first- and third-round picks. Maybe the high tender led him to believe he's definitely coming back (even though the tender could be moot if the new CBA uses the pre-2010 free-agent system, as many suspect) -- or maybe he expects to come back no matter what.

Just throwing it out there.

Santonio Holmes demands multiple years
April, 9, 2011
By Tim Graham

ESPNNewYork.com reporter Rich Cimini caught up with receiver Santonio Holmes at a memorabilia show in Somerset, N.J.

Holmes is worried about one autograph in particular -- the one he'll put on his next contract.

2010 STATS

* Rec52
* Yds746
* TD6
* Avg14.3
* Long52
* YAC229

Holmes wants a multiyear deal, not the one-year restricted free-agency qualifying offer the Jets tendered before the lockout.

"I want a contract, flat out," Holmes said. "If I sign a contract, it will be for multiple years. It won't be for one year."

Holmes didn't declare a desire to re-sign with the Jets, saying he'll sign the best offer on the table.

But his true free-agency status will be determined by the next collective bargaining agreement or whatever legal decision forces the NFL to proceed without a CBA in place. Under the 2010 uncapped season rules, Holmes would be restricted. In normal seasons under the previous CBA, he would be unrestricted and free to sign with whomever he wanted.

"I played five years to wait for my sixth year to come up," said Holmes, who was traded by the Pittsburgh Steelers last offseason because of off-the-field issues. "I don't want to play for a one-year deal. I wouldn't do it."

Holmes also revisited his comments after the Jets' loss to the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. He was upset over not being on the field at the beginning of the game and seemed perturbed with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

"I was being critical of not starting in the game," Holmes said. "However anybody wants to take it, whoever it was taking a shot at, that's that. I was being critical of not starting in the AFC Championship Game and I was frustrated. I was very upset that I didn't play for 10 plays. It probably made the biggest difference in how we played."

Source: Jets have 'no interest' in Moss
Adam Schein
Updated Apr 12, 2011

The New York Jets will not be signing free agent wide receiver Randy Moss when the lockout ends.

A reliable league source tells FOXSports.com that the Jets have "no interest" in bringing in the talented but troubled wideout. Multiple reports this week indicated the Jets had serious interest.

Sources tell FOXSports.com that coach Rex Ryan talked in glowing terms about Moss as a way to motivate Jets free agent Santonio Holmes. Holmes told reporters over the weekend that he still had issues with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer stemming from his benching in the AFC title game loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And there have been questions as to whether Holmes would work out in California with Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The Jets have several big name free agents and their top priorities remain bringing back Holmes, wide receivers Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

Holmes Leans Toward Returning to the Jets

NY-AX247_nyhof2_D_20110420175407.jpg

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes said he's taking a wait-and-see approach to free agency, which has been delayed because of the labor dispute between the league owners and players' union. But he said he'd likely end up staying in a Jets uniform if the price is right. "[Whether I re-sign] has everything to do with the team," he said. "If the Jets want me back, I'm pretty sure they're gonna do what they have to do to get me back," he said. Holmes, who earlier this spring did mission work in Africa with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, has said he's seeking a multi-year deal after having been traded to the Jets last year.

Dynamic Holmes' rare ability should make him Jets' top priority
By Bucky Brooks NFL.com

Santonio Holmes' knack for coming up with the big play in crunch time would make him valuable to any offense.

NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks solicited questions from fans on the NFL's Facebook page this week. After reviewing the submissions, he tackles the posts that grabbed his attention.

Who should the Jets keep at wide receiver: Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards or Brad Smith? Do you see the Jets making a play for Plaxico Burress? Lazy Lex

The New York Jets have a tough decision to make at wide receiver. Ultimately, the Jets would like to retain Holmes and Edwards, but money is always an issue.

Both guys made huge contributions to the passing game, and their presence is a complement to the Jets' punishing rush attack. They also provide Mark Sanchez with the weapons he needs to reach his potential as a franchise quarterback.

If the Jets had to make the decision between Holmes and Edwards, look for them to pick Holmes. The Super Bowl XLIII MVP is a legitimate No. 1 receiver with the rare ability to shine while running every part of the route tree. Since he can excel at all facets of the position, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has the flexibility to use him in a variety of ways. As an intermediate option or vertical threat, Holmes must be accounted for by the defense and that opens up the field for his teammates. He also brings dynamic running skills, which allows Sanchez to hit him on short passes with the potential for big gains. Given his overall skill set, the Jets would likely make him the priority in free agency because he can serve as the anchor to their passing game.

Schottenheimer says he's on same page with Santonio Holmes
Coach says he bridged differences with wideout Aaron Wilson
June 02, 2011

Angered by how he was utilized against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the New York Jets' AFC championship loss, wide receiver Santonio Holmes and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have apparently mended fences.

Schottenheimer told ESPN New York that he smoothed things over, saying, "We left on good terms."

That wasn't the case following the game when Holmes was obviously upset about the play-calling.

?Ask Coach Schottenheimer what happened; he?ll explain everything to you," Holmes said. "I don?t have the answer to that. We?ve got to put together the plays that we?ve been running against these guys, what?s been working for us. We kind of got away from our game plan in the game, and it forced us to go do what we have to do to survive.?

So Santonio, how have you been spending your time in the offseason?

?I have been spending quality time with my family and working on my charity stuff. I travelled to Africa which was amazing. I just finished my 2nd Annual football camp in Belle Glade and am looking forward to the Finesse Football Camp June 19 ? 23 in Florida (finessefootballcamp.com).?

When you aren?t working out and doing your charities, what are the top few things you enjoy doing?

?I enjoy cooking and playing video games. I really like having time to myself. That?s when I come up with ideas on things I want to focus on with regards to my foundation.?

See any good movies recently?

?Fast Five, Madea?s Big Happy Family, HOP, Rango, and Hangover Part 2.?

Everyone knows that you are very big on charities. Anything coming up for III & Long?

?Yea, we are working on several great opportunities for III & Long Foundation. We are working on the Hands Up 10 Project which is going to focus on getting clothing donations that we can send to Africa. I noticed the need during my visit there.

We are also working on different Sickle Cell project ideas that once we have them established and put in motion, I will definitely be letting everyone know how they can help. The III & Long is also focusing on The Dream Project where we go and mentor young kids that really need someone to encourage them to follow their dreams and make the right decisions in life so they can be successful at whatever they choose.?

Santonio Holmes Pros for Africa

We saw that you went to Africa for the Pros for Africa. How was that experience? Did it change your outlook on anything?

?It was an amazing experience. We teamed up with Pros for Africa (prosforafrica.com) and Starkey Hearing Foundation (starkeyhearingfoundation.org) and handed out 2,500 hearing aids to men women and children; fed 2,500 people; dug water wells; and handed out water straws to 500 kids. The poverty level there is unreal. The thing that impressed me the most was how appreciative they were for everything we did for them or gave them. It was definitely a touching experience.?

Report: Holmes could be disciplined for gaming investment
June, 16, 2011
By Rich Cimini

As a pending free agent, Santonio Holmes figures to cash in when the lockout is over and the league year begins. On Thursday, he was in the news for a different money-related reason.

Holmes is one of 25 NFL players who could be disciplined by the league for investing in an Alabama bingo and entertainment company, according to a report by Yahoo!Sports. Under league rules, a league employee isn't allowed to associate with a gaming operation. The NFL is sensitive to the gambling issue, and understandably so.

The report says that 25 players, including Holmes, Terrell Owens and Santana Moss, invested a total of $20 million in the casino. Jason Cole, who wrote the story, reports:

WR Holmes wants to retire a Jet

By Mark J. Miller

Santonio HolmesThe New York Jets have a boatload of talented wide receivers that will be free agents when the new collective bargaining agreement finally gets agreed upon.

One of them is Santonio Holmes(notes), the 27-year-old who had 746 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Jets in his first season with the team.

Both the Jets and Holmes have publicly said they are interested in rejoining forces. But FOXSports has it that Holmes would like the relationship to go even further than that. A source close to Holmes tells the site that he "is absolutely looking forward to playing the rest of his career in a Jets uniform."
