Hall returns, and so does Daniels
Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio - What's brewing today with the 2006 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYE BUZZ: Wide receiver Roy Hall will likely see his first action of the year in Saturday's 12:10 p.m. start against Cincinnati.

Hall has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain and has missed the Buckeyes' first two games.

"Roy Hall looked good this week," coach Jim Tressel said after Thursday night's practice. "I'm really pleased with the way he played. Another 48 hours and I'd like to think Roy can give us some time."

Tressel said Hall wouldn't play 40 plays but might be able to get on the field for 10 or 15.

COLUMBUS? Receiver Roy Hall had a good week of practice and could play Saturday against Cincinnati after missing the first two games of the season with an ankle injury, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said this evening.

?I was really pleased with the way he played, today especially,?? Tressel said. ?With another 48 hours, I?d like to think Roy can give us some time.??

Hall, a Brush graduate, won?t be in at the No. 3 receiver spot though, which Brian Robiskie had taken over in Hall?s absence.

?I don?t know that Roy can go that much,?? Tressel said. ?I don?t know if it would be fair to him to play 40 plays. But if he can give us 12, 15, that?d be great.??

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK
Hall expected to rejoin Buckeyes at receiver

Even when they did get to Troy Smith, the Longhorns couldn't keep the OSU quarterback down.

Ohio State?s already deep receiving corps just got deeper.
Coach Jim Tressel yesterday said fifth-year senior Roy Hall is expected to play for the first time this season Saturday against Cincinnati after sitting out two games because of a high ankle sprain.
"Roy really looked good this week, I was really pleased with the way he played today especially," Tressel said. "And with another 48 hours, I?d like to think that Roy can give us some time."
Tressel said Hall would not immediately reclaim his role as No. 3 receiver, though.
"I don?t know that Roy can go that much," he said. "He could be in there in the (four- and five-wide formations). I don?t know that it would be fair to him to have him play 40 plays, but maybe if he could get a dozen or 15 plays, that would be great."
Brian Robiskie has been Ohio State?s third receiver behind Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez. Brian Hartline and Ray Small are next in line.
In another injury note, Tressel said linebacker Mike D?Andrea had knee surgery last week. He is a fifth-year senior whose OSU career was declared over as training camp ended a few weeks ago.
"We?re hoping he can get back for a pro combine-type day (in March), quite honestly," Tressel said.
Death in the family

Quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels, already fighting kidney cancer, suffered another blow when his mother, Carmella, died Wednesday morning in Pittsburgh.
Daniels went to Pittsburgh immediately after Ohio State got back from Texas last weekend and returned to the team yesterday, Tressel said.
"He?s doing fine and he hasn?t missed anything for physical reasons," Tressel said, "but when you lose your mom, sometimes that?s even more difficult. I?m sure it?s going to be a very difficult weekend, because the services are Sunday (and) Monday."
No clarification needed

In the coaches? weekly evaluation report on officials that is sent to the Big Ten office, Tressel said Ohio State sought a clarification of the roughingthe-passer penalty on Jay Richardson that kept alive Texas? only touchdown drive in OSU?s 24-7 win. But Tressel said "really, there is no clarification" needed.
Referee Bill LeMonnier, a Big Ten official, made a judgment call because "he thought he was protecting the quarterback," Tressel said. "I didn?t think so at the time; I don?t think any differently now. But I?d rather have guys err on the side of safe than I would the opposite happen and all of a sudden there?s an injury."
Besides, Tressel said, "We had some bad calls, too, from our sideline by the coaches, so I can?t blame him."
Quite a streak

Quarterback Troy Smith has not thrown an interception since the first quarter of the Northwestern game on Nov. 12, 2005, a streak of 121 passes and more than four games.
He has thrown just one in his past seven games, spanning 185 attempts.

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK
Hall ends touchdown drought

Monday, October 02, 2006

MIKE MUNDEN DISPATCH Roy Hall, left, and Anthony Gonzalez celebrate Hall?s 6-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. It was Hall?s first touchdown in 27 games dating to the 2004 season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Seeing the ball in the air, Roy Hall thought of only one thing.
"Make the catch," he said. "By all means necessary, make the catch and come down with it."
Hall?s 6-yard touchdown catch in Ohio State?s 38-17 win over Iowa on Saturday night was his first scoring reception in 27 games, since a 2004 victory over Marshall.
"It felt real good. But we?ve been practicing hard," he said. "I do things like that in practice all the time. I just had the opportunity to make a play today and went out there and did it. Everybody knows we?re deep at receiver, so when you?re out there you just have to make the most of your opportunities."
Hall, a fifth-year senior, entered preseason practice as a starter in the Buckeyes? threereceiver lineup but suffered an ankle injury the week before the opener. He did not play the first two games, was limited in the next two and was leapfrogged on the depth chart by freshman Brian Robiskie.
"To see Roy Hall get to the end zone was very (meaningful) to me because he?s come a long way," quarterback Troy Smith said. "He had a minor setback early on and he?s come back strong. (He) faced it like a true warrior."
Lesson not learned

After unsuccessfully trying to cover receiver Anthony Gonzalez with a linebacker on some downs in 2005 ? Gonzalez had six catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns ? Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz explained the scheme was a part of the Hawkeyes? normal defense.
So they tried it again Saturday night and were twice burned.
"They do it really well ? ordinarily," Gonzalez said after catching five passes for 77 yards and two more scores.
Ohio State brings so many capable wideouts to the table, often using five at once, that the Hawkeyes didn?t have enough speed to match up with them. They were further limited after free safety Marcus Paschal was sidelined in the first quarter by a hamstring injury.
"That was kind of the plan, to spread ?em out and get linebackers on receivers and just go from there," Gonzalez said. "Their defenses are fairly predictable and ? we were able to exploit what they do because we knew going in pretty much the looks we were going to get."
Life under the pile

The first of Iowa?s three crucial fourth-quarter turnovers came when cornerback Antonio Smith stripped Iowa?s Scott Chandler after a reception and safety Brandon Mitchell recovered the fumble.
"When he hit the ground, he bounced up and then it rolled under his legs," Mitchell said. "I knew he didn?t have control of it, he was laying on it, so I basically just came in and pulled it (out) and tried to hold on as tight as I could.
"I?ll tell you what, I have a newfound respect for those linemen at the bottom of that pile. It was rough down there. They were pulling hard trying to get it from me. I cradled it like a baby."
Lulled to sleep

Coach Jim Tressel on how the Buckeyes managed to be penalized for delay of game before kicking off in the fourth quarter:
"When they spot the ball ready for play, you have 25 seconds to kick it. We?re so used to ? people standing around for hours it seems like (during television timeouts) and we didn?t notice.
"It?s our fault on the sideline as coaches for not saying, ?Hey, let?s go.? I feel terrible about it, but you almost fall asleep during some of these TV timeouts."

I was sooo pumped or Roy when he got that score! He has been very patient and I think he's been saying all the right things, and sounds like he's been a solid example to all those 'waiting for their turn', so I was really hoping he would have some 'payoff' this season...hope his success continues.

Not to place a cloud on his moment or anything, but I've been wondering about something I kindof caught out of the corner of my eye on the play. Right before the snap of the ball, it looked like Roy flinched / jumped...or maybe he moved up to the line in the formation while someone moved off the line (but I didn't catch any other movement). Did anyone else see this...does anyone have it taped that can look at it?

As the play happened, my thought was "Wow, I think we just got away with one." (which would be the only thing the refs let slide our way in that game)

So, did the refs miss a false start by Roy, or did I miss the shift in formation by our team...or maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me all together.

edit:
I just read the 'The Buckeye Watch' on OZone and the writer caught the movement too, but I also just saw the picture of the Iowa defender with the clear pass interference, so I don't feel bad (just one more of the many horrible calls those refs made. they should lose their pay for that game)...not that I did before. :)

Playing your best ball as a senior... definitely applies to Roy. Definitely helped set the tone for the OSU offense on that first drive.

Couldnt agree more. I am sure that scUM wasnt expecting us to come out and hit him like we did on the first drive.

Just another one them guys showing up in their senior season on senior day...
