5 former Ohio State players who could go overlooked in the NFL draft

The NFL Scouting Combine kicks off on Tuesday, and once again the Ohio State football program will possess a heavy presence in Indianapolis.

After having 12 players drafted — including five first-rounders — a year ago, the Buckeyes will send eight former players to next week’s annual draft showcase. Among the former OSU players invited to this year’s combine are projected first-round picks Malik Hooker and Marshon Lattimore, as well as center Pat Elflein, linebacker Raekwon McMillan, H-back Curtis Samuel, cornerback Gareon Conley and punter Cam Johnston.

But just because a prospect didn’t get invited to the combine doesn’t mean his NFL hopes are over. With that in mind, let’s look at five ex-Buckeyes who could go overlooked this draft season.

Noah Brown
The only Ohio State underclassman to declare for the draft and not receive an invitation to the combine, Noah Brown’s decision to forgo his final two seasons in Columbus came as a bit of a surprise. In his first season of significant playing time, Brown totaled a meager 30 catches for 385 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2016.

Nevertheless, Brown is hopeful his size (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) will make him enticing enough for a team to use a pick on him, likely on the third day of the draft. Miller ranks the New Jersey native as his No. 27 receiver and 162nd-ranked player.

Without the combine, Brown will have to make the most of his senior day and individual team workouts. Although his play could be considered inconsistent, he showed plenty of flashes last season of being a pro-caliber player.

Of the 5 in the article I think Noah has the biggest "upside"; he showed flashes of brilliance (like in the Oklahoma game) in 2016 but just wasn't consistent. I just think he would have really increased draft position (and his NFL chances) if he came back for the 2017 season, stayed healthy, and put up some good numbers.

Hope you are right about Dallas being a great landing spot. Love seeing Buckeyes on teams that are doing well (unless the uniform is black and yellow).

He must of had his reasons to give up more playing time, or maybe I'm not understanding the financial side of things. After the OK game, I thought he would be a highlight film for 2016 and 2017.

I guess a couple things...

Noah is ultra competitive and takes great pride in his blocking on the perimeter, which is contradictory to a guy who has "work ethic issues".

There were some concerns around Noah in regards to "practicing hard", especially after breaking his leg.....and honestly, who could blame him? I think Noah goes above and beyond when the lights are on, and maybe he started protecting himself and going a slower speed when no cameras were live.

Noah also decided early on he'd leave as early as possible to cash a check.....again, can you blame him? His broken leg spooked the shit out of him, as it would most people who depend on their limbs to make a living.

At the post-draft presser Jones and Garrett both cited Noah's run blocking as one thing they liked, along with untapped potential as a receiver. They kind of like to run the ball down there. Feed!

There are now three former Ohio State Buckeyes on the roster of the Dallas Cowboys.

Noah Brown signed his first NFL contract on Friday morning, according to the team's official Twitter account. Dallas drafted Brown in the seventh round (239th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft last month. He joins former running backs Rod Smith and Ezekiel Elliott on Dallas's roster.
