WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2022 Rose Bowl MVP, Seattle Seahawks)

“We’re evaluating him this week and hoping to have him back this Saturday,” Day said. “Having him as part of our offense is a big deal. He makes such an impact. Not too many guys you can say at the wide receiver makes everybody else on the field better, but Jaxon does. It was great to see some guys step up in his absence, but yeah, it’s not a long-term thing and we’ll evaluate him throughout the week.”

Yeah, great players make those around him even better. The defense is going to have their best cover man (and/or he'll be double teamed) on Jaxon Smith-Njigba. That means there will be "lesser" coverage on the other receivers, etc. Also, the more DBs the defense has in pass protection to defend guys like JSN, the less DLs/LBs they have up front to stop the run.

We don't need him this week, or next. If he's 90% or better next week, go ahead and work him back in some then sit for the conference stretch. Do not rush him back please. We'll need him for UGA and Bama in the playoffs.

Come on you can all see what I see coming down the line. LOL. Unless it's Ohio State, michigan, Alabama and Georgia in the playoff. Good lord that would be sick

Yeah, plus it’s obvious CJ needs game reps with MHJ, EE2 and Fleming; this will force that to happen and come the conference stretch hopefully there will be a good deal of trust, timing and quality execution established by when it’s truly needed.

That's one of the takeaways from the ND game for me, it was obvious he didn't have the same rapport with the guys you just listed. And 100% those are guys Stroud is going to need in big game situations in the harder stretches of the season, so why not build that up in the next 2 games where we don't need JSN to handily win. I was hoping he would play these next 2 games just to shred some season records and win personal awards, but I think everyone (including JSN) knows that an extra bit of caution for his future and also making sure he is available when we really need him is the best play. Glad he doesn't have a serious injury, though during the game it looked fairly minor but just enough to make him not effective in live game play.

Ohio St. expects Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Julian Fleming to play

Ohio State expects preseason All-America selection Jaxon Smith-Njigba and fellow wide receiver Julian Fleming to play this week against Toledo.

Smith-Njigba, who led Ohio State with 1,606 receiving yards in 2021, suffered a hamstring injury early in the Sept. 3 opener against Notre Dame. He went through light warm-ups last week but did not play against Arkansas State. Fleming, who had 12 receptions last season, suffered an undisclosed injury late in training camp and has not played this season.

"He's further along than he was at this point last week," coach Ryan Day said of Smith-Njigba. "We're going to expect him to play this weekend, we'll see how this week goes, but we're going to only put him in the game if we feel 100% sure that he's ready to roll."

He shouldn't play until Iowa at the latest.... he tried to push it and now he's hurt again.

We certainly don't need him for Rutgers and won't for Sparty after what we've seen from them.

Shit at this point you dress him for Iowa and see if we can do without until Perp State.

DAY HOPES JSN CAN RETURN VS. RUTGERS

While there wasn’t much to be concerned about with the Buckeyes’ on-field play against Wisconsin, one major question still lingering after Saturday night’s game is the health of wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who did not play for the second time in three weeks.

Although Smith-Njigba was healthy enough to play one week earlier against Toledo after sitting out the Arkansas State game, he didn’t even participate in pregame warmups with the Buckeyes before the most recent game, leaving reason to believe Smith-Njigba reaggravated the hamstring injury he initially suffered in the season opener against Notre Dame.

Day, who had said Thursday that he thought Smith-Njigba would be available to play against Wisconsin, said after Saturday’s game that the Buckeyes “decided to kind of shut him down for this game.” He did not get into specifics about why that decision was made but expressed hope that Smith-Njigba would be able to return to practice this upcoming week and play in next Saturday’s game against Rutgers. However, Day stopped short of saying he expected Smith-Njigba would be back next week.

“We’re gonna hope we'll kind of get him going on Tuesday and hopefully make some progress and get to see him play next week,” Day said.

I don’t know how he feels and I don’t know what the severity is at this point but if there’s a single game remaining on the schedule about which you’d be the least concerned with his presence, it’s this one.
