World Cup - England vs USA (Sat 2:30 ET, ABC)

The last time I was this pumped for a soccer match - TEAM USA crapped on my heart and lost to Mexico in GC final.
Prior to that, they crapped on my heart with a blowout loss to the Czeck's in WC 2006.

Sounds like it's time for BigWolf to settle down a bit... or 3rd time's a charm. Your pick.

No kidding boss - I need to taper my expectations a bit.
Maybe I'll go to the gym and watch it on the treadmill instead of the local faux Irish Pub -that way I'm staying fit instead of drowing my sorrows in Boddingtons after England go up 2-0

This might be silly and uppity to post on a board full of Americans who love all sports - but does anyone else think a draw would be a monumental stroke of good luck?

I'd love to score first (think Portugal in 2002) and then park a bus in front of the net (Spain in Confed Cup 2009) and see what happens. England panics and maybe we get a 2nd goal on counter-attack?

If we get a draw, I would be pretty happy. England has more talent than us, and there's no question about that. I have too many concerns about our defense to think we have a good shot at winning, but if our offense can keep up, I think we have a decent chance to draw.

I think a draw would be a major victory personally. I like your thinking on strategy, though I don't think a 1-0 lead would ever hold up against English firepower. We did break through and beat Portugal in 02, and I guess one could arguably put the win over Mexico in the category of break-through results as well (though I wouldn't), but far too often we seem to come up just on the short end of the score against the big boys (Italy 1-0 in 90, Brazil 1-0 in 94, Germany 2-0 in 98, Germany 1-0 in 02). We did get the 1-1 against Italy last time out, and we need to build on that a bit. Right now a good result against a major power is considered a fluke...we need to perform well and get points in a game or two like this one to change that perception. We also need to do that by scoring...it seems like we drop the decision without a goal every time out (see above). No doubt we can score on the best teams now, but can we stop anybody?

No tapering needed, just a different approach since your excitement directly affects the team. :wink2:

I'm pretty amped about the game too. I have a cousin's wedding to go to on Saturday... thankfully the game falls between the ceremony and the reception otherwise I'd either have a not-so-happy family or an empty stomach, though either one would be worth it if the Yanks can pull out at least a draw, if not a win.
