Power knocked out at Pitt campus
Thursday, July 13, 2006

By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Many of the buildings on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland have been without electrical service since around 5 a.m., a spokesman for Duquesne Light Co. said.

Joseph Vallarian, spokesman for the power company, said two underground cables failed on McKee Place, disconnecting service to the university, including its hospitals.

UPMC Presbyterian and other facilities have been operating this morning on emergency backup power, Mr. Vallarian said.

The university posted a message on its Internet Web site advising that non-essential personnel in 14 buildings should leave work.

The facilities that are being effectively shut down are Trees Hall, Fitzgerald Field House, Cost Sports Center, Posvar Hall, Heinz Chapel, William Pitt Union, Bellefield Hall, Stephen Foster, Mervis Hall, David Lawrence Hall, Hillman Library, School of Law and Frick Fine Arts.

The message was posted on the Internet around 10 a.m. However, there is no access to the Web site from the campus because of the power outage.

Duquesne Light had no estimate this morning as to how long it would take to restore power.

But the entire computer network was downand the place was getting all muggy from the lack of AC, so I just left.

Tibs, don't know if you heard about this but a few weeks ago the electric went out in one of the OSU research Labs but there was a glitch and instead of the back-up generator kicking on, the heat kicked on and killed over 700 rats and mice in the research lab. They said the temp. got up to 107 degrees. I believe only about 30 rats survived.

They said some researchers entire careers of research was lost along with multiple treatment advances that were being worked on for things like MS and cancer.

A shame if you ask me.
