The Ohio State University Women’s Volleyball Team, ranked nationally at # 19, this past Saturday (Oct., 1st), beat the nations’ #1 team, Nebraska, in Lincoln.
The Buckeyes head home from Lincoln with a victory for the third consecutive time (2012, 2014, & now 2016). The most recent victory snaps Nebraska’s 28-match winning streak dating back to last season and marks the fourth win for Ohio State over the Cornhuskers in the last five meetings.
The Buckeyes improve to 12-4 on the season and even-up things in the Big Ten standings at 2-2.
Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011. They have been dominating in Women’s Volleyball every since. They own a winning record against all competition in the league – except against the Buckeyes who in head to head they are even at 4-4. Another nice note is that the Buckeyes are 4-3 in Lincoln.
The Buckeyes would drop the opening set, 25-17, before they spun directions and out-scored Nebraska by combining 20 points over the last three sets. In the final set (the fourth) controlled every aspect of the game winning 25-13. OSU’s Luisa Schirmer attacked .480 on 14 kills during the three triumphant sets. She participated in a dozen digs to record her second straight double-double. Schirmer also had three block assists along with two service aces and was directly accountable for 19.5 points.
Taylor Sandbothe matched Schirmer’s 19.5 points, insanely delivering 12 kills, nine blocks, along with a pair of aces. Sandbothe’s .346 hitting pace was only exceeded by fellow Buckeye Taylor Hughes, terminating a career-high 11 kills at a .500 rate (11-2-18). Freshman Camry Halm paced the team digging up 14 balls, helping to limit Nebraska at a .175 attacking efficiency overall.
Taylor Sandbothe bypassed Danielle Meyer (2004-07) into second place on the all-time Ohio State career blocks list. She now proudly has 481 blocks and is in pursuit of the current record holder and her 517 blocks – Dawn McDougall (1988-91).
Set 1: The opening set was closely challenged, but then Nebraska went on a tear – a 9-1 run which pushed tight 13-12 lead into a 21-13 dousing. That eight-point difference would hold as Nebraska won the first 25-17.
Set 2: Taylor Hughes in the second stanza stepped up big-time, carrying a tremendous amount of the production offensively by directly impacting 17 of the team’s 18 kills on 11 assists and six kills. Despite her impressive efforts the Buckeyes trailed 15-13 midway through the period when a four-point OSU shot encompassed of back-to-back-to-back-to-back kills by Hughes and Sandbothe — a pair of put-aways’ from Hughes bookend by Sandbothe kills. The Buckeyes would add two more tallies to its advantage by the end of the set (25-21), tying up the match heading to intermission.
Set 3: The offense took off here in the third. Ohio State attacked with a .536 while Nebraska passively delivered a .312. The score evened on 13 occasions before the Buckeyes moved ahead for good in the combination of Hughes-to-Sandbothe hook-up; 20-19. Ohio State then secured five of the next seven rallies for another 25-21 triumph.
Set 4: The Buckeye attack cooled momentarily in set four, dipping to a .346. Sandbothe would be on fire here, rejecting the ball five times. This performance forced the Cornhuskers into a negative -.057 hitting percentage. The Buckeyes then poured it on as they raced to a 7-3 lead. It would end quite favorably for the Buckeyes, 25-13. The Buckeyes posted a flawless 100% side-out percentage in the final set, taking the point on all 13 Husker serves.
The Ohio State University Women’s Volleyball team now head up north to challenge the *ichigan State Spartans on Friday, Oct. 7th at 7:00 p.m. They then move on to Ann Arbor and meet up with TTUN on Sunday the 9th, scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve. This one is set to be broadcast live on ESPN.
