This past Sunday (Oct. 11th) @ Fred Beekman Park our Lady Buckeyes Rugby Team met up with Penn State.

The Lady Nittany Lions are, in fact, a national powerhouse in the Rugby world. They are a 10-time 15s National Champions. And most recently the 2015 7s National Champs.

They came to play.

It would not be a good day for our Buckeyes on the field anyway. (PSU 91 – OSU 5) What became important would be the ability to execute while under such high pressure. The coach’s aim was focused on nothing else.

The Buckeyes once again would be short – having only 1 sub vs. a full squad, with 2 injured players’ unavailable, weakening readiness for another week.

Picking up from the last game vs. Notre Dame, our women were not sloppy and played valiantly from the start. However, after 7 minutes in, Penn State capitalized on each and every mistake, pursuing with a vengeance. Penn State’s pace was too much, happening too quickly. Fresh legs on the field were needed for the Buckeyes – but were simply unavailable.

Ohio State’s adjustments came slowly, tackling becoming a major concern – too high & too weak. This allowed the Nittany Lions to break many tackles and recover the ball in the rucks quickly to counter attack.
Despite feeling the fatigue, certainly not in any position to pull off a victory, our Lady Buckeyes dug deep and punched hard down the field and scored a try between the posts.

There is never an excuse for a lopsided defeat – athletes hardly soften in any attempt to weaken the blow. But coaching often has to take routes to determine what needs to be fixed and look forward, not into the rearview mirror.

The Ohio State University Women’s Rugby Club’s coaches did precisely this. A major problem facing these ladies is there are not enough bodies available. Fresh legs are of an urgent need. Without them fatigue is quick and powerful. The desire of this squad exists. They are a tough group who proudly wears the Scarlet & Gray…

…Rebuilding is here.

Never underestimate the heart of any athlete. Regardless of what happened this past weekend at Fred Beekman Park there was, in fact, a group of women, Ohio State Buckeyes Women, who strolled out onto the field bravely to face Goliath … and though they never pulled off any David like feat, they were as commandingly noticeable of their inner strengths as any warrior who yearns for that victory under such misaligned odds.

Our Lady Buckeyes are a promising team with heart. And we are proud of them.
