The Ohio State University Women’s Rugby Team this past Saturday (Oct., 24th) began positive as they continued their community generosities. Early in the day partnering with OSU Life Sports a 2-hour clinic at the French Field House was ran with an encouraging turnout of approximately 100 kids – ages ranging between 9 through 14. All had a good time and a great deal was accomplished. The girls were quite pleased.
Then off the team went to Fred Beekman Park to watch The Men’s Rugby Team battle Wisconsin in a replay of the 2014 BTU Championship Game (We will get to this one by tomorrow- stay tuned!).
The Lady Buckeyes were to begin their match against an improving Indiana University Team (currently at #2 in The Big 10 standings) @ 3:30 p.m. at Fred Beekman Park @ the conclusion of the Men’s match.
The game started ideally. The Buckeyes received the kick-off deep. IN moved rapidly to pin them down. The Buckeyes pulled off a spread – getting the ball through a short diagonal kick, Brie Rahrig caught the kick from flyhalf Cyndi Campbell, and managed to fend off surging IN players – scampering 80 meters to score between the posts. The conversion was good.
The Buckeyes were up quickly 7-0 after only a minute and a half into the game.
The game soon changed course as the Buckeyes slumbered down a path that would prove detrimental. Playing against a strong wind would only add to the miserableness bestowed upon our Buckeyes. This passage, unfortunately, of their own making, exposed the strategic idea of maintaining possession, which did not materialize in their phases of the attack. They were forced to kick the ball away – too many times.
The Buckeyes were simply on the wrong side of the field too often to present any hope, or a surfacing of possibilities. IU capitalized as often as they were permitted by an increasingly sluggish Buckeye defense.
The half had IU up 29-7.
The half-time talk by Coach Joel Bonnaud focused on bringing the players core center back with a heavy emphasis on tactical availabilities. The Buckeyes had started the game with only 15 players, no substitutes. This only raises the harsh realism of tired legs with zero reinforcements. Adding to the Buckeyes horrific afternoon with the hand dealt to them – 3 players would have to leave the field for injuries. With a loss gazing in the future for these fearless ruggers in Scarlet and Gray the humiliating lump that never sits well in an athlete’s throat was increasing as IU continued to exploit the Buckeyes errors and score.
The Buckeyes would be the last to add points onto the score board as Brie Rahrig would get another try with the clock ticking down.
IU 75 OSU 12
A defeat is unfathomable for a fan base that sits and summarizes a game they often could not play as well as they would like to believe. The criticisms are rampant and so arm-chair-ish that it is submerged in pure fantasy. A coaching staff and the athletes involved in a game understands the core idea of needing to focus and retool the heart in that effort to move on and deal with what can be changed and learn from what cannot.
Our Lady Buckeyes took a hard hit this past weekend. Unfortunately ugly losses happen in the world of sports. But just take a moment and remember what the Great Woody Hayes once said: “I don’t apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there.”
No doubt these great athletes are willing to take the blame in their past loss and move on. The only ones that apology are those who have done something wrong. There was nothing done wrong this afternoon – only a plan to remodel and never repeat.
Oct., 31st at Bevelhymer Park in New Albany Our Lady Buckeyes take on *ichigan State University @ 3 p.m.
See You There. GO BUCKEYES.
