While eating out, do you prefer a straw or without?

i, too, prefer no straw; however, it also depends on how hot the food is. the temperature differential can be too great not to use a straw.

as far as the server giving you a straw, it's just a matter of maximizing time. rather than giving a customer a drink without a straw and then having to make a trip for a straw when the customer asks for one, it is far easier to assume that all customers need them.

Nice points. I guess it does save time.

Concerning the temperature of the drink, have you ever noticed that drinks seem colder in glass compared to plastic?

you bring up an interesting observation. plastic is a worse conductor of heat than glass is. all things being equal, the drink held in the plastic cup should remain cool longer than the drink in the glass cup. however, the drink held in the glass cup may feel cooler because much of your mouth is placed on the glass cup and, therefore, feels the coolness of the cup. whereas when drinking from a plastic cup, your mouth is placed on a less cool object and, therefore, the warmth of the plastic cup is noticed.

so, the drink is likely not cooler in a glass cup, but the cup itself makes it feel cooler.

edit: the statement has not been tested. such conjectures are merely a priori.
