Where to Stay on Gameday

Hello from Rutgers!

I was looking for help from you guys (if you don't mind of course). Where are the best hotels to stay on gameday? Ive heard there are two areas - the Olentangy and High Street areas. Do you have recommendations for both? Is one better than the other?

Any info at all would be appreciated! Thanks and looking forward to next year!

There are no hotels on High Street in the campus area and I'm fairly certain the few that are on Olentangy fill up extremely quickly.

In my opinion, your best bet would be to look south around the Arena District (High and Nationwide) for good restaurants and bars within walking distance of hotels. Another option is looking north along 161 or even further north towards Polaris. There are plenty of restaurant options in these areas but neither are walkable and there isn't much in the way of bars.

Obviously, these areas are further away from campus and you'd have to take a cab or bus (or drive, but parking is a bitch) on game day, but as far as I know there aren't better alternatives.

I'm sure it is nearly impossible to get on gameday, but The Blackwell is an outstanding place and less than a half a mile from the stadium. Also right on campus, so everything is right there. But like I said, it might already be full.

The convention center (Short North) is close enough to campus to walk to the game, unless you're old and feeble. The Hilton and Hyatt there might be excellent choices, and there's plenty of night life nearby to make it a fun visit.

I always stay at the Hampton Inn on High Street and walk to the games - three miles each way. Lots of decent restaurants and shopping within a 15 minute walk.

EDIT: The Hampton Inn is in Short North, near the Hilton and Hyatt which MaxBuck mentioned above.

One of the finest restaurants in Columbus is in that Hampton Inn: DeepWood. Has a great bar, too.

Well, there is the Red Roof Inn on Olentangy. Some folks set up tailgates there....but yeah, it's still the Red Roof Inn....but maybe the closest (available) hotel to Lane Avenue and the stadium.

I've stayed at the Fairfield (Marriott) a little further north on Olentangy. Includes a continental breakfast, nice rooms. I stayed there when Miami Hurricanes came to town and there were a lot of visiting fans staying there.

Wherever you decide to stay....I would recommend setting up your reservations...NOW!

***Hotels near campus may require a two night stay...downtown hotels likely won't have that restriction. I agree, the Arena District (downtown) can be fun FridaySaturday night.

Thanks for all the help - keep it coming! Our plan is to come in Friday and stay until Sunday. Is tailgating an option anywhere or do you need to be a season ticket holder and have parking passes for that?

Im not sure what you mean by Short North? Is that a section that High Street is part of?

Short North is a length of High Street (and a couple blocks on either side) that runs north of downtown to almost the southern end of campus.

You can set up to tailgate anywhere there's a parking lot/garage, or actually anywhere else on campus that you want to set up tables, chairs and grills. This campus is pretty friendly to tailgating so long as you keep the beer and other alcohol under wraps. As an FYI, there are plenty of lots and garages available on campus for game-day parking for, I believe, a $20 fee. Some private businesses near campus also have parking available for similar (and in some cases less) fee.

Tailgating is not an issue. Finding a place that isn't already taken is the hard part. However, you'll usually be welcome to join other tailgates as well (as long as you don't wear blue and gold)

Parking around stadium is by permit only.

I'm partial to lots just off Lane Avenue west of campus. Fyffe Court Agricultural area. They fill up fast though!

If you don't mind Red Roof Inn, thats a decent location, and they let you set up a tailgate area there.
