What young guy breaks out during bowl practice this year?

Let the cards fall...
As I sit here on the last Saturday in November anxiously awaiting OSU's bowl fate, I can't help but think about the bright future of the program. The scandals of the past have finally been put to bed, and we have had a star QB emerge on offense. All of this has got me thinking about the very beneficial bowl practice that the Buckeyes are getting ready for. Normally this time of year see's some young kid finally "get" it, and emerge as a rising star for the next season.

With the likely departure of Holmes next season I think that Albert Dukes is a likely candidate for rising star. Also, keep an eye out for young froshy Brian Hartline. I also think that we'll continue to hear great things about Maurice Wells.

Defensively I think we'll have a few step up also. I think we'll hear great things about Doug Worthington and Lawrence Wilson from the DL spot. Though I'm not sure if he will practice, you can never forget about the highly talented Marcus Freeman. Also look for Chad Hoobler to have a great winter. I think Jamo Oneal will really come on also, and will likely set himself up to be one of the next headhunters for the OSU secondary next season.....filling in for one of our safeties, because we may lose both after the season.

I'm just speculating, but it gets slow this time of year for a little while. Who are some of your candidates?

daddy, I think you've named almost all of the likely candidates. The other names I would add are Andre Amos at CB and Todd Denlinger at DT.

Boone we already know about.

I agree that Laurinaitis will step up his intensity. Maybe he never thought it would come this quick. The one question I have is will we ever see Mike D-Andrea again. Is he finished or is he still injured? I always liked him when he came into the program. I hope he can make a big comeback if its possible.

Heres a guy that nobody is really talking about...Sirjo Welch. Now I know he went to the same HS as me, and people may think my opinion is biased. But last year in the bowl game this kid really showed and with some guys in the secondary leaving, I really think he has a chance to get some good quality play time. Last year he saw alot of time on special teams and so is he this year too.

Now another former Beechcroft player...Antonio Smith. He is seeing alot of time on special teams along with Sirjo. The kid could've made the biggest play of the Texas game if he would have tackled the Texas returner in the endzone for a safety. I don't expect him to get as much PT next year as Sirjo, but you never know.

As far as results we are likley to see in the Bowl game

Offensively: Mo Wells-he's this close(hold finger and thumb as close together as you can without touching)

Defensively: J Laurinaitis-all depends on Carp's status but the last frosh to break in a LB lineup this experienced was Hawk getting meaningful PT in 2002. Just sayin.

IMO we won't actually see guys like Dukes, Freeman, Hoobler etc do it on the field till next year although its always fun to hear who the studs were in practice.

Marcel Frost.

You stole the guy I was thinking of. He came out of the doghouse and started contributing at the end of the season. He obviously has the hands and now is beginning to put it together. If the light has finally gone off for him I see great things in his future. More practice time, film time and S&C will really pay off for the kid.

The best part is that extra month and a half of practice. The players have busted their butts to earn it and now is the time to take advantage of it. I always comment to the MSU fans how beneficial it is.

I like Hoobler as well. I think the guy will challege for some playing time.

Me too - ever since his possessed play in Spring game I've wanted to see this fella get many reps. Using James Laurinitis in rush D and Hoobler in those rush off the edge schemes Carp ran so well (3rd down and long) could be a great way to split those reps. Hope Hoobler earns the chance.
